Running hot?
« on: June 17, 2015, 01:53:04 AM »

Hello All,
Well, finally after almost 2 1/2 years of work and way too much money, I got the old girl up and running. I have only put about 20 miles on it so far but it seems to be running hot. The bike is my 07' SERK that I have rebuilt or replaced just about everything due to the previous owners accident.
The only change I've made is I installed Feuling 574 cams. Other than that and slip on pipes she's pretty much stock. Was wondering if I'm just smelling a new "Everything" breaking in or what. Should I be concerned? It seems to run well and I have no leaks or funny noises coming from the engine. It was only 85 degrees when I rode it to DMV to get it registered.
Thanks,
Chris  :nixweiss:

Have you had it tuned for the new cams?

A rebuilt motor always smells for a few heat cycles. Get it to tuner, let him tune/break it in on the dyno.

07 already had a pretty lean tune from the factory. Changing cams and pipes will certainly make it leaner yet!!! With Feul Injection, the only REAL way to get it right is by using a professional dyno operator and getting it tuned properly right from the start!! After all the work you've put in, it makes sense to finish the job right. I would not run it anymore until its been tuned, an improperly tuned engine can damage itself in minutes. If it where mine I'd trailer it to a pro, have it tuned for proper AFR's.
And please don't rely on a HD shop to do the work, most will use their downloads  for generic "that's close enough" maps  and call it good. It will be far from a proper tune.
I'm not a tuner, nor do I own any type of dyno, but I've seen the results of improper tunes and the job done right many times.  jm2w fwiw twinotter

How do you break it in on a Dyno? I thought it too 2000 miles to properly break a motor in. The pistons and rings would have to be a really loose fit to go straight to a Dyno for break in. Loose fit generally means less miles before you need new pistons and rings.

2000 miles, now that is a new one. A dyno operator who knows how can easily break-in any engine, car or bike. Throttle and load,  then unload and build vacuum, go thru a few heat cycles and check plugs and sensor readings, Does not take long if the motor was properly built.

2000 miles comes from S&S, back to when they introduced shovel kits. Because morons would take a new motor and pound the pi$$ out of it for hours right from get go. Had to cover their butts, can't blame them. On a dyno everything is controlled, temps, load, timing and AFR.

As suggested, an engine can be broken in on a dyno with proper heat cycling, and immediate work on AFR's, then loading the engine and decal to break in rings. It is not done at WOT, but carefully in small stages, watching and changing AFR's as required all while watching engine heat. As little as 50 miles on the dyno will do it, while being assured fuel mix (AFR) is right for the various load conditions. Riding the bike with no tune prior can lead to very serious issues, too lean or too rich will both damage a motor, esp a new one very quickly.
I would personally change the oil/filter at this point. Its broke in!!!, but not where I would go out and ring the snot out of it. If its done correctly, you can drive it normally, at any speed considered legal, including good acceleration for passing, merges etc for the next 500 miles. At that point, I'd change the oil again and your ready for that 2000mile trip your dying to take!!  jm2cw twinotter

Ok, I agree with you guys on getting this thing tuned before I make any major mistakes. That said, I have an appointment on Monday the 29th to have, hopefully, everything sorted out. I'll post my findings next week.
Thanks for your input, Chris  :2vrolijk_21:

I have an appointment with Jim @ Metal Dragon in Hayword Ca. After watching and researching the Feuling 574 cam installs and Dyno reports, here in central California, Metal Dragon has the best reputation around for what I need.

I think that's who Jim at Metal Dragon sends his bikes to for dyno tunes.  Can't go wrong with those two guys.   :2vrolijk_21:

Jim now has his own Dyno which makes things easier.

I just sent my new 124 up to Bob from San Diego a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier with his results. Passed a whole bunch of tuners to get it to him.
