I got Nailed
« on: April 16, 2016, 07:06:04 PM »

Today i'm home alone and was going to see how many of you lift the fuel tank to clean the valve covers, seems like an easy thing to do right, I have removed the tank on my old Ultra, about a 10 minute job being I already have the seat off, and as I'm doing my inspection of everything prior to getting the bike wet I notice that there in the rear tire on the outer edge of the tread is a nail. A couple weeks ago I had the front tire replaced do to it wouldn't hold air, the dealer did it under warranty, I put some soap on the nail and wiggled it around, but didn't see any air bubbles, called the dealer to let them know and the soonest I could get in is the 26th. Well after hearing that I decided to pull the nail out, it goes in at a angle almost as if just below the surface, I pulled it out and it's a 1 inch shingle nail. I than put on some soapy water mix from the wash bucket, and watched it with a flashlight, didn't see any bubbles and I'll put the pressure at 40 to recheck in a few days.
My question is being that I bought the tire and wheel warranty, should I try to get the dealer to replace the tire, or just wait and see if it leaks down, so far I think I got lucky that it went in the way it did.

You only have 2 tires, if one goes out you go down. i don't take chances with motorcycle tires. if i have a nail i change it, no patching as that weakens the tire.   have the dealer replace it under warranty.

I was going to check the air pressure, but lastill night I had a couple shots of fire ball, sicker than a dog now
I 'm going to put the nail back a few blocks from the dealer when I take it in.

Let us know how it comes out. I'm betting the dealer ain't replacing it. Read the warranty.

I can assure you that if I did exactly that.... The nail be in the back tire before I got there.  I'd end up having to buy two tires!

Load it on a trailer and reinsert the nail.....nobody is saying that it has to be at the same angle or even the same location :-*

Your tire pressure does not remain the same while riding, it's fine to test in a controlled environment like your garage, but once you put the rubber to the road the rubber will heat up and expand.

Like everyone else says, the value of your life is not even close to being comprable to the mere inconvenience and cost of the replacement.

Update;
I checked the pressure yesterday and it was down about 5 lbs, I waited for today to call the dealership and talked to one of the owners son to let him know I ran over a nail and was going to ride it in but the tire was low and that I needed to air it up first, he said no way he was going to let me ride it and a trailer was on the way.
So I went and put the nail back into the tire, they came and picked the bike up, a few hrs later I get a call from the service manager, letting me know there is good news and bad news.
Good news was the tire warranty was approved and tire had been already installed.
Bad news; while on the test ride with the bike someone backed up into it while at a stop, the dealer always sends a spotter bike out on every test ride, must be for such an occasion, both riders had to back pedal the bikes while blowing the horns to no avail, the only thing that kept it from being worse was the passenger in the car told the driver of it to stop. But not before hitting my bike.
I was told it was a slow impact but the tip of the fender is bent in but not touching the front tire. Rider didn't get hurt.
I'll some how leave the shop tomorrow to go take a look, was also told there is a new line up of rentals if I want to force the guys insurance to cover it.
I'm thinking what ever I can do to help the fool learn to use his mirrors and turn his fat head around before backing up will be a good idea. And if that means using up as much of his insurance to do it, I will

Well that sucks but if you rode it down and that nail let loose you might have had a lot more issues than just a bent fender.

You know I read this and thought its amazing some of the input you get to do things that are just deceitful for what ever reason. I'm just happy you didn't get hurt. Not going to say what I was thinking.
