more and more cvos
« on: June 11, 2016, 05:13:37 PM »

seems to me there are as many cvos on the road as non cvos. so, this morning  on way to the job site (gatlinburg) I counted: 11 metrics or whatever ,23 harleys and 19 cvos. there were a couple of non cvos that may have been cvos in that count. the newest colors i am not totally familar with right now. also a couple of the new Indians.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Go to Bartel's in Marina Del Rey. I was there yesterday and counted at least 4 on the showroom floor. Price for most was marked at $41,580.

I was at Southside Harley in Va. Beach and the sales manager says he has 3 CVO used bikes and he can't sell them, said he was almost ready to give them away......says CVOs sell great new but not so well used since those who can afford a CVO just buy new not even looking at old..........

I do believe there was a time when the CVO was exclusive. This was when there really was a "limited" number made in York, PA by teams of 4 who saw it through from start to finish.

Now the CVOs are assembled on the same line with all the other bikes. They just change out the motor, tins, and bling along the way. Really not much different than when the MoCo makes a Shrine or Peace Officer Edition.

I can see why the MoCo does it, It's just as easy for the line worker to put in a 110, CVO tins, and bling as it is to build a stock bike. And it allows the MoCo to make more CVOs.

But I could be wrong.

You're not wrong at all.  The change from limited volume and exclusivity to just another option package built on the same assembly line was driven by dollars and cents.  It is much less expensive to assemble the bikes on the regular assembly line than it is to produce them with two or four person teams in a static environment (no moving assembly line, few sophisticated power tools or automation, etc.).  Unfortunately moving them to the regular assembly line ruined the perceived notion of exclusivity and "custom" for most people who found out about the change.  Add to that the ever escalating prices for a product that was now just thrown together on the same line as the cheapest models, and the huge increase in the number produced, and a CVO is nothing special anymore.  Think of it like I do, an expensive option package just like the ones offered by auto makers on their cars and trucks.  Nothing exclusive about them, just bigger profits (add $1000 in content, raise price $5000 for instance).

If anyone wants an exclusive bike these days, they need to find a true custom bike builder and have one made just for them.  Bring a bigger checkbook of course, but at least that way you get to specify what hardware you want versus just accepting what someone in Milwaukee wants to include.

Was there today Alan.  They have a lot more than 4 CVOs.  They had 4 CVO Ultra Classics sitting side by side.  We also looked at two CVO Street Glides that were sitting side by side.  We weren't looking for CVOs in particular so not sure how many more they had.  :nixweiss:

But I do remember when we had to put a deposit down and wait several months for it to arrive and rarely saw another on the road.  Now we see them often.
