dealer joy riding/damaging your CVO?
« on: January 04, 2017, 11:40:51 PM »

Anyone have any issues with this?   I personally had this issue when I first bought it and in service, would like to see if anyone else had the same.
I learned to document the mileage and take a lot of pictures, no matter how nice/cool dealership staff is.    It is caused me alot of grief.

Have not had the issue "yet". I always take a before and after photo of the mileage if I take the bike to the stealership. Some say I am paranoid but in this day and age it can't hurt.

Well to start off, I bought my new CVO street glide at a dealer, closed the paper work and picked it up the next day.  Well, when I test drove it it had 8 miles on it and when I picked it up it had 17 miles on it and a nice big dent on the front fender. I was furious, luckily I saw it when I picked it up but I was still pissed someone put 9 miles on my new toy and the dealer tried to pass it off to me with damage. I asked the salesperson who sold me the bike, why is there more miles on it, he said I was wrong.

More to come,  >:(

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for the dealership to damage the bike and try to slip it past you, but there are many valid reasons why they would put a few miles on the bike during prep or after servicing the bike.  You can't automatically assume a few extra miles means someone was out abusing your bike.

Taking photo's before leaving a bike with the dealership is a good idea, but to make it enforceable in case you have to go to court you will probably need to show them to the service manager and have him sign off on the condition of the bike before any work is performed.  It's a shame you have to do things like this, but in my experience the number of places that won't automatically take responsibility for damage they cause has grown over the years.  Any place that lies to you about other things would be a good candidate for the signed photo treatment IMHO.  Or better yet, don't continue to do business with people who lie to you.

Several years ago I had my '07 in for service.  Techs always perform a test ride afterward to verify all is ok.  I noticed things were taking quite a while and finally the tech came out to say that while fumbling with the magnetic card to open the gate at the back of the dealership he had dropped my bike.  He and the service manager took me to the shop to inspect my bike while it was on the lift so I could verify everything they found damaged . . . and it was quite a bit as the bike was very new and they and I would accept no imperfection.  They got the parts and installed them.  That's the way a reputable dealer handles such situations and I am fortunate to have a great relationship with such a dealer.  Sorry yours did not measure up but hope all turns out ok for you.

Not doubting your story and very sad to hear what happened. I would however like to pass on some wisdom I have learned in a lifetime of sales experience and motorcycle riding. Killing folks with kindness is a great place to start. Whoever barks the loudest wins the prize, a lot of hot air. My Harley service guys in G'boro are the nicest guys around because I made them that way and the last 3 bikes I've bought I didn't buy from them. But I always introduce myself around to them. I'll go by and take them donuts or biscuits and chat them up. its easy to do. I'll give them a tip for lunch money or beer when they come out and pick up my bike or when they give it a good wash. I'll even have a couple of the service guys I trust to ride it occasionally just to get there input (its a 200 hp bike). And we have had our disagreements but we have always worked them out I believe because of the respect we have for each other. As a very wise person once told me, "Do not confuse my kindness for weakness". I hope your issue get resolved.

The damage now a new bike would be a problem. The mileage really wouldn't bother me. Would probably bother me more if I looked at the mileage and it was unchanged.

Not to take up for a dealership but one of the local dealers have been bit so many time of supposed dealer damage the service writers now grab the owner, and a camera every time a bike pulls into the service area. Mileage and any damage that can be found has a picture taken. And they look the bikes over pretty well.

There are good dealers and bad dealers. Over the years, you learn to avoid the bad apples. I have never heard of a Harley Dealer doing something like kalikali's  situation and not standing behind it. I would have never taken the bike out of the showroom, paperwork or not.

Dropped the CVO at another dealer for service, it had been there a few times for warranty issues.   One time they decided to put 30 miles on it, to find a minor backfiring issue, which I later find out is common.  It also came back with a tweeked front rotor from excessive breaking, which I didnt do.

Anyways later on, I drop it off again for other warranty issues,   it was filthy from a recent trip. I specifically told them not to put excessive miles on it this time. They called 10 days after the bike was there and told me they were still waiting on parts and it will take longer. They were strict on not washing the bikes they service  and yet when I picked it up after 30 days  it was semi washed. I found out later that one of the saddle bags looked a bit off, a few chips in it and the stickers inside of it looked a bit off. The saddle bag looked like it had been used a lot, my bike is/was relatively new. I think they switched out my bag, not a 100% sure but something is off.   When I purchased the bike it has paint issues so I went over every single inch of the bike.

Point of this rant is just a heads up to take some caution when dropping off and picking up your CVO. I had  dealerships put minor dents and scratches on my other Harleys, not a big deal, but spending 40 k on a bike that I treat with kid gloves, they need be extra extra cautious with it.  It has caused me some grief but you learn as you go.

Years ago on the rare occasion I ever did a bike to the dealership anything I could safely take off I did.  So it went to the shop with no saddlebags or tour paks installed, dismountable electronics removed and whatever else might be easily taken out of harm's way.  Had seen too often parts detached and simply set down on concrete floors (at best) and other problems experienced by others.  You can't totally eliminate someone else's benign or malignant disregard; but they can't jack up what you don't put in front of them.

Luckily I have a local indy shop who I really trust. Used to take photos of mileage and the only time he ever put a few miles on was to test ride after new tires. And it was usually only 4-5 miles. The only person who's ever really "rode" the bike was the person who dyno tuned it. And he told me up front that if I bring it with a full tank, I will get it back with a full tank. But depending on the tune he may have to log some miles. I was ok with that.

I would be absolutely livid if I took it to a shop and they put on excessive miles AND damaged the bike. It actually makes blood rush to my face just thinking about it!
