At a roadside stop, off in a distance, you can see Split Rock Lighthouse located in Silver Bay, MN.

The lighthouse was built in response to the great loss of ships during a 1905 storm in which 29 ships were lost in Lake Superior!

It is built on a 130ft sheer cliff .

At the time of its construction, there were no roads to the area and all building materials arrived by water and lifted to the top by crane.

The structure was completed in 1910 at a cost of $75,000, including the buildings and land.

The steam sirens were replaced with a Type F-2 T diaphone type signal in 1936.  The station and fog signal were electrified four years later but discontinued in 1961.

The light was first lit in 1910 and in 1940 was electrified and the lamp was replaced with a 1,000 watt electric bulb.

There were three keepers’ houses with one heck of a view!

At the time of my visit, ~ 3:30pm, they were winding down their day and had a limited selection.  They do stay open until all of the donuts are sold which is between 3pm-4pm.  They bake a large selection however I had a choice of three.  I choose a cake cinnamon sugar donut.
