Another question to the previously illuminated.  How long of a security cable/chain has proved to be "long enough" in common usage to rope these things down when they are unattended and unhooked from the bike?

Buy one of those 25' COATED Kryponite cables and a lock and run it thru the wheels and tongue because there's alway a light pole somewhere close!

I'm not being sarcastic or joking... I really always wondered and never asked anyone. Can you backup? It seams like it would be a task even on a flat surface. What kind of turning radius do you have? Lets say if I pulled into a hotel I was unfamiliar with and turned into a dead end with not much more width than a single lane. Would I be able to get out of it without unhitching? This has always been one of the thoughts that kept me from considering a trailer.

Haven't tried it on mine but a friend who is also an MSF rider coach has a Busthec on his Goldwing.  Takes it through the "box" (double u-turn we use in the course) with his trailer attached.  Box is 20' wide by 60' long, no problem.  As far as backing up, never had a problem.  If road is flat enought to back up your bike under your own power then you can do it with the trailer also.  Just like in a car - turn front wheel opposite direction you want trailer to go.

Wheels AND the tongue.  THAT is an idea I hadn't thought of.

I've got a shorter version of one of those cables that I'd thought about wrapping around a wheel and some adjacent pole.  Wheels and tongue would require a more determined crook though.  Excellent idea  :2vrolijk_21: .

I can only post from personal experience but consider this.

You have an S/E Ultra, so imagine backing up solo, is that easy? Then imagine adding a 150 lb. passenger.
You say, "WELL, no problem, it's a little harder but I can manage."
Thats the same as adding a trailer. With a passenger and trailer it becomes more of a challenge, but hell if it's to much trouble then tell the passenger to get off. Turning in a parking lot is not an issue as long as you remember whats behind you.

"Always remember it's there"

Am I hitting on a theme here or what? ;)

Well a determined thief could easily remove the wheel and hacksaw off the tongue.  What I do is through the wheel AND over the suspension under the trailer then around a fixed object likt a light pole, etc.  Real easy to do.

Oh Don.  Got so carried away responding to all these questions I forgot to say CONGRATS !  Great looking trailer and you will really enjoy it.  Don't sweat it man - you'll get used to it in no time, I promise.  But just don't forget it is back there.  No kidding at first that is the hardest part.  And watch out around gas pumps when pulling away and turning.  You know those big poles embedded in concrete around the pumps?

You have to remember it sticks out farther than the bike when pulling in and out for gas. " And Always Remember It's There "

Since there's all that extra room available how about this.
Buy a welder and a long drop cord and some angle iron and weld the trailer frame to a steel light pole.
Don't forget the torch also to cut it loose when your ready to leave.
That should stop a "determined thief"

That part (wheel and suspension) I had thought of.  Just hadn't seen a good picture of the bottom side to see what of the suspension was accessible to the purpose.  Good to know that it's an effective option.

If I hit a big-assed pylon next to a gas pump I will never admit it to anyone here.  NEVER.  ANYONE.   NEVER.  Will just say I sold the trailer.

Man I really did open a can of worms by resurrecting this thread.

Twolane, did you wonder why some of us trailer towers warned you about the gas pumps? ::)
