Yeah, stay on topic, Striker! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Actually, mine was scaring me a bit at 85 mph this weekend.

Take a look at the may Issue of Thunder Press, extremely detailed info on things to adjust for wobble.

Like a lot of you I also went the route of 12" 440's.
Got a question for you 440 users. A few of the posts I have read state that adjustments
are made one or two clicks etc etc. Unless I have the wrong shocks, the adjustment is made by turning the top of the shock in either direction to soften or stiffen. The only indicator I can see is circular grooves as you tighten up on the preload.
This could be the dumb question of the website but are you referring to these visible grooves for adjustment?
One observation I have made is that the Progressives work so well that it brings out some dampening weaknesses in the front suspension. Curious if anyone else feels the same and what's out there.
As far as the wobble subject,I agree it happens at all speeds but is exaggerated at the higher end. I haven't used my Tour Pack yet but can attest to smooth vibration free ride at speeds up to 100 mph.(NOT SUSTAINED) While reading all of the posts I would also suspect the Tour Pack along with tire pressure and most importantly alignment. A poor dealer prep without checking alignment would be my first guess.

HARLEYBILL....I think the confusion may exist in several of the posts by using "clicks" instead of "turns" when adjusting the 440's.

HARLEYBILL,

I too switched to the heavy 12.5 in. Progressive 440s.  The adjustment on mine is like yours, no clicks.  I adjust mine by counting turns from zero preload because I use a half turn up to three turns depending on the load I am carrying.

Immediately after changing the rear shocks and realizing a dramatically improved ride on the rear, the front suspension now stood out as requiring improvement.  I also noted another undesireable situation.  The front end would wander in a most annoying fashion on rain grooves at freeway speeds.  When encountering certain rough stretches of rain grooves, the handlebars would actually want to turn from side to side (a form of wobble?).  This phenomenon did not occurwhen I used the original 12 in. air shocks.

In addition to the desire to improve the quality of the ride on the front, I also wanted to raise it by the half inch gained in the rear for ground clearance.  My solution was to go to the Race Tech compression springs and their Emulators.  I don't claim to have the Emulators adjusted perfectly but the wobble effect went away, the front suspension improved and I gained the half inch of ground clearance.

BLM, just quoting American Rider, Red Mountain and Molas rated in the top 10 in the world.  Haven't had all your experience, but I would say other than what I read about Dragons Tail, this is plenty for me.  By the way over 7 years on race circuit, and no major injuries, yet pushing a bagger over Mountain passes, on public roads, always concerns me.  How old are you anyway, to have put on 300k 20 years ago.  If you did it at 40, you would have had to averaged 15-20k per year.  I have to give you credit, that is alot of riding.

Morning all.....first the bike: '05 SEEG, stage 1 w/ HD race tune, V&H true duals and 12.5 factory windshield cut down to 10"  The bike is a dream to ride on any road in any conditions, handles perfectly w/ 2 up couldn't ask for more except: solo at 105 to 110 I get a very slow almost harmonic wobble moving of the handlebars left and right at about 1 second intervulls. It's noticeable worse w/ lower vents open.  It's controable but unsettling!!   I have not tried to drive "through" it {110+}

I've had it on the lift and checked the basisc, tires 40psi front and rear, no swing arm play I can see, front and rear are alligned the best as I can tell, rear shocks are at 12 psi etc.  wheels are true and no play I can find in the front fork.  Removing the tour pack on 2 runs lessened the wobble but it's still there, probably 50%

My gut feeling: the problem is in either in the front steering head or the swing arm getting torked or it's dancing.  Because this is a very calm harmonic wobble, not the usual violent oh s*** were going down!

I see this thread is almost 6 months old and I have read them over and over and checked the other sites mentioned.  I also have a neighbor who has the same bike, all stock, who described the same condition to me w/ no prompting on my part.

After spending $34k+ am I to toss the tour pack and drop another $500 for shocks like the 440's??  My dealer is of no help as I got the usual dumb a** retort "last time we looked the speed limit was 65"  As a final note I have managed to get HD's attention and I'm still waiting for a call back from Milwaukee.....................

Any help/info would be greatly apreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I don't mind the extra expense IF thats what it takes but I would hate throwing $$ in the wrong hole.

Ty for all for your time any imput you might have.........Lz [smiley=anxious.gif]

The shocks actually might help but my guess they'd be palliative and not a real solution.  I'd tell the shop that it's doing what you're describing, or even a bit worse, at some other speed so they couldn't give you the run around.  Tell them it feels like it's coming out of the head so they'll have to pull the fairing and double check the adjustments and tighten them up just a bit.  That's likely where it's coming from.

also the same "type" of "wobble" sometimes it feels like your backing off the throttle compareable to racing on a 1 mile flat track - it concerns me on the aerodynamics of the front fairing and its angle - also the headlight is a sealed fit allowing no airflow except to outer/upper areas of the fairing accentuating the movement - my 04 Ultra front angle seemed to be lower and did not get this wobble - what is also curious - when clear plastic additional wind screens are installed onto the fairing - it is less movement  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] - so does it go as deep as the bearings - or the front end design - cause now we are collecting data from all users on this issue

CURIOUS TO KNOW IF THE RIDERS WITH THE "WOBBLE" ARE RUNNING A FULL 12" TYPE WINDSCREEN. I HAVE A 12" SCREEN AND ALSO A MEMPHIS SHADES 9" THAT SEEMS TO BE ALMOST TWICE AS THICK AS THE ORIGINAL HARLEY SCREENS. THE MEMPHIS SHADE SCREEN HAS NO FLEX OR MOVEMENT AT SPEED OR UNDER HARDER THAN NORMAL ACCELERATION. SEEMS A LITTLE CRAZY BUT IT SEEMS TO GIVE THE BIKE A MORE SOLID ON THE ROAD FEEL-STABILITY? THE HARLEY SCREEN WILL VIBRATE IF YOU ARE ON THE THROTTLE HARD FROM ABOUT 80 MPH & UP.
COULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT A TALLER WINDSCREEN COULD PROMPT OTHER MARGINAL ADJUSTMENTS TO ACCENTUATE THEMSELVES?

Lz....I think 2Lane is on the money with a head adjustment problem.  I've ridden about a dozen or so SEEG's in the past couple of years and have only noticed one that had a very slight "wobble" at high speed.  That instance was resolved with a head adjustment and reducing the pressure in an overinflated front tire.  I noticed you were running 40psi in both and may want to drop that back to 36 all around an give it a try.  I'm sure heat is not a factor this time of year up in your country, but down here, 40psi in high temps, blacktop road and high speeds will actually create about 46psi and a definate vibration in the bars.  Good news....not an inherent structural problem or they would all have the shakes.  Just my thoughts...good luck.

Thanks guys for the imput!!  The "wobble" was worse when front was at 36 and rear at 40. Haven't tried to lower rear tire  as yet??  As for the windshield.........my neighbor has the stock 2-3" tinted, same problem. As for the dealership they will only take the bike for a ride up to the posted speed limit =65MPH insurance, liability etc.  And on the last note........the HD rep. who called me and was SO INTERESTED in my problem yesterday, has yet to return any of my calls.  Please don't take me wrong..........this is the FIRST new HD I have EVER bought for myself and I just love it!!!   'Till I hit 105 and up...............................
