That is correct (at least it was for me). Those that have bought a Zumo (or any Garmin GPS) that came w/the 2008 map should register w/Garmin. Once you do that you can log in to your account, go to "My Maps" then "Manage Maps" there you will see the updates available and if you are entitled to a free update.

I guess I used my "free" one to get the 2008 update. Oh well.

Yep, you did. As far as I know you only get one free update. Also I've heard it's not really important to get yearly updates (sometimes the changes might not affect the area(s) you travel in). I'm planning on getting them every other year.

Is there a limited number of times the update CD can be downloaded? :nixweiss:

Mark,

You can download it as many times as you want.  Problem is, the unlock code is only good for one unit.  I tried to purchase the update CD with multiple unlock codes to update all of my Garmin units, but that was beyond their capability, so in the mail came 3 identical CDs with 3 different unlock codes.  Would have been so much easier to have just sent one CD with 3 unlock codes.  They could have saved money and it would have been nice to have passed that savings on to us.  Seems like they should offer a full update with CD for price A and then additionally offer an update with unlock code only for price B.  Save the S&H and maybe even knock off 5 or 10 bucks in the process.   :soapbox:

The update can be downloaded for "Suggested Retail Price: $ 69.99 USD" directly from their site. I don't know how much you paid for S&H.

Same bargain price they offered me for the 09 map.  Guess I will wait until the 2010 maps are available.

From what I've heard it's not crucial to get the updates yearly. :nixweiss: Most are updating every other year.

AJ,

At least, that's an option for the 2009 update!  I don't think they offered that with the '08 update.  Just did the '08 update not too long ago and think I'll wait for the 2010 update unless there's something earth shattering in the '09 update.

Miy "08" map occasionally tries to route me down a closed off dirt road (fenced closed) through a pasture that has not been public for 20 years.  Figure by 2010 that might be corrected, but not holding my breath.  Usually does an ok job getting me where I'm going, but motel names sure must change a lot.

Iski,

I wouldn't count on that!  The updates to '08 added a few roads, but the old errors of routing through fields and closed off dirt roads have led me down some dead ends just like they did on the previous version.  (Just ask T-Bone and Chip!)  But,  the Zumo is a great device even with a few mapping bugs that I have come to rely on and don't know what I'd do without.  I still keep a small Atlas in the saddlebag for that day when I'm deep into the roads somewhere and the unit craps out!

I keep an atlas handy also, Lilbear.  Usually Zumo steers me well.  Occasionally it's WTF there hasn't been a road there in 25 years!?

Overall, it's saved me a lot of miles in the car as well, and today miles = money more than in the past.  Figure the Zumo unit will pay for itself, more or less, in a couple of years, if I count the time saved.  Really handy to have an address saved & hit "Go".

Interestingly, it calculates in small county roads at times that I never knew existed, & some of them are great rides!  Others sorta dead end to nowhere....   8)

I needed to get a new laptop so now I have to reload the Garmin software. I'm having trouble loading City Select v7 because it's saying it won't load with OS XP Professional. Anyway, while doing all the updates, I just saw that the HD POI file was updated 5/14/08, it's on gpssion.com.

Firmware update Version 4.20 -

Changes from version 4.10 to version 4.20:
Corrected issue with Retail Map Update compatibility.

Use WebUpdater to get/install this update. As a precaution you should remove SD card before running update to ensure the update is installed in the unit and not the card.

Hmmm, good question. Not sure if that is possible. :nixweiss:
