I'll also add using the waypoint feature will really complicate your route if you are just dragging the route to where desired, but could be used to get time/distance to stops (breaks). When you use the waypoint feature the Zumo will give you time/distance to get to that particular waypoint when you are travelling along your route. This could confuse you if you didn't realize that the time/distance displayed was to that waypoint and not your final destination.

Have not much success "dragging" the routes in MS, since it tends to choose roads I do not always wish to take.  I got used to the waypoints time/distance deal.  Usually I scroll through the route a few times to get an idea of how it will ride/time.  S & T is just more user friendly IMHO.  Bet future editions of Mapsource will get more user friendly.  Bet I'll be buying upgrades, too...... ;D

Quirky thing about Mapsource - I choose "no unpaved roads" option always.  On 2 trips lately, it tried to send me down grassy roads running through pastures that were NOT even public roads.  Figured out partly due to "shortest" route chosen instead of "fastest" route.  Debated a few seconds about stopping, & pretending to open the gate just to get the reaction of the riders behind me, but decided against it.  Might have cut into important beer drinking time later.... ;D

I think S&T is the same as our "Autoroute" - and the differences go way beyond that.  You can do everyting with the mouse - zoom in an out, drag the map in any direction, etc., without having to keep selecting different functions such as select and zoom, and constantly having to switch between them. Mapsource also lacks (in Europe at least) basic things like Ferry terminals.  It's without a doubt one of the worst thought out bits of software I've seen (and computers are my business!). Thanks goodness for the HD Route Planner!

Jim

Jim,

Think our S & T is the same as your Autoroute.  Mapsource in the US will aloow for fery terminals - took 3 in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in May.  It had no clue as to the proper time for each ferry, but to be fair, the ferries change - some are fast, others are slow.  I checked the Zumo and it showed the bike on the correct route even when on the water with arrival time counting down.

We use the HD ride planner a lot & share rides with other HOG members.  Very good to know it loads straight into the Zumo.  Will pass that tip along & know other riders will be VERY happy to learn this.

Since I was planning routes for a 3500 mile trip that starts on Friday (hope it's more successful than the fiasco of last year that regular readers may recall!) and getting off and back on to this little island requires ferries, I was horrified to not find them on the Zūmo, Mike!

Wonder why they would not include ferries, Jim?  Most all maps commercially available indicate ferries.  :nixweiss:

In Mapsource, an option exists to choose ferries or bypass them.  I had to check a box that allowed ferries before they would show up, as I recall.  I did not allow dirt roads, but that did not stop Mapsource from trying to send me down a couple.

Hope you have a great trip & post pics!

The ferry ports are shown on the maps, but you can't choose one as a destination (even on the HD system you can do that!)

Thanks Mike - I'll try, on both counts!

Not just downloaded, Gary - automatically uploaded to your Zūmo straight from the map on screen!

You should try to get a look at S&T to see what decent route planning software is really like!

Jim
When I said downloaded I meant to the Zumo, the same thing can be done in MS using the "send to device" feature.

I'm not trying to discredit S&T or any other mapping software as I know there are better ones out there then MS. I'm just trying to show ways MS can do some of the features that some may not know exist. One thing I'm sure we can all agree on is that MS isn't the easiest program to use/learn.

I'm sure it's very capable, but it's dreadfully clunky ant thought out Gary - just try S&T to see the contrast.

BTDT when changing the route by using "Selection Tool" that was the reason I mentioned zooming in to make sure the route is where you want it be. This is one of the features that could be better in MS. You mentioned getting used to the time/distance to the waypoints couldn't you use "waypoints" to designate breaks? I know this isn't the same as S&T's, but it would at least tell you as you're riding how long it's going to take to get to that waypoint (break). :nixweiss:

Have no idea why MS was directing you down an unpaved road, but would suggest (if one so desires) when you run into that type thing to report it to NAVTEQ (creators of mapping data). With the constant changing (addition, deletion, closing) of roads these things will happen.

I noticed the "u-turn" problem re:waypoints after the first time I routed a trip.  Now I zoom in - no problem.

I did use waypoints as break stops, but then a Sporty showed up on that ride so we stopped for gas more than planned.  No big deal.  Should work ok.

Will report those dirt roads to NAVTEQ.  One south of Dublin, Ga was a real surprise - was already on US 1 north of Baxley as I recall & it lead to Dublin, but the Zumo tried to send us down an unpaved pig trail.  ;D  I was leading, did not turn of course, and later on the group did not even remember the road but recalled me slowing down then zooming off.  ;D

Overall I am VERY happy with the Zumo.  Has saved me MANY gallon of gas (miles) in the car & made the bike trips a lot easier than they used to be.  As with most things, we gripe about the 2-3% of the thing that doesn't work as well while taking the other 98% for granted.  Human nature.

BTW - most all my riding buddies with Tom-toms, & other Garmin GPS devices mostly prefer the Zumo since it is much more user friendly.

:-[ Uh oh, I really need to start reading directions. That is one of those things that while using the Zumo really frustrates me. Now I see all I had to do is read a couple of pages, damn this A. D. D. ;D

I hate reading directions almost as much as I hate having to stop & ask for directions.  That's another reason I like the Zumo - it knows where I am better than many gas stations attendants know where they are these days.   ??? :o ;D

Oops! I posted the wrong URL for the trip!   Yes, looking forward to it, heading off tomorrow at crack of dawn.  Not quite fully sold out - one of my friends who was going with his Mrs. had his bike sieze on Sunday att 75mph, throwing him off. He's in hospital - smashed hand, broken collar bone, slight swelling to the brain, but on the road to recovery already.  Enough recovered to be trying to get out of bed to prove he can still go on the Posse Ride!  We'll miss him being with us.  :(
