Mr. d00d (or anyone else who knows) - is there a reliable, easy to use file converter for converting MS Streets & Trips files into Garmin files?

If so, is there a link on how to use it (with step by step info for the semi computer literate)?

I give up..I'm going to polish chrome. I sorta know how to do that. LOL

Ken,

How's the polishing going?  Did you ever get your CD's ripped into MP3 format?  Like Mark and others have stated, there are several "free" programs that you can download that will do a fine job of ripping your CD's and even many of them are cross format compatible (i.e. Apple AAC to MP3 etc.)  A good one is Media Monkey and can be obtained free from www.mediamonkey.com  It works pretty well and is fairly user friendly.  You can always bring your tunes here and I'll be happy to rip them for you while you polish chrome on the bikes in my garage! (I'll make sure to take my time ripping them so you can get all of the chrome really shiny!)  Seriously though, if you need any help, PM or call me and I'll be happy to offer some assistance.

I got the polishing done yesterday morning...THEN rode all afternoon and got bugs splattered on it again! LOL I'll try the media monkey thing! Sounds simple enough for a monkey like me to use!

Hey guys...for those of you not wanting to deal with Mapsource when planning a trip to load to your Zumo...

I was on the Harley Davidson site, and if you are a HOG member...go to the HOG Ride Planner...here's a link.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US

You can plan a route either using other people's loaded routes, that are recommended for riding, or you can make your own.  It's an easy
planner, and at the upper right hand corner is a GPS Synchronization button.  It loads the routes into our Zumos.  I like it much better than Mapsource.  Good luck, and ride safe!

Doc

Now THAT is just brilliant, thanks Doc! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :drink: :drink:

If you compare Mapsource to ANY other program, it's a right pile of pony - I'm amazed at just how bad it is.  I did a route in no time using MS Autoroute, (Do you guys call it Streets and Trips or something?) and thought when I got the Zumo, it would be similarly good. Wrong!  It is dreadful. Garmin need to bin it and start again!  However, planning on the HD site is great, simple, and - much to my surprise - does Europe too, and you can just load it straight from the HD site into your Zumo.  Having done just that, I wonder why anyone would ever use Mapsource again!

Mapsource does just royally suck (all proper apologies to The Queen).  If this works with the Streetpilots as well I may not have to deal it any longer.

Mapsource is a steaming pile compared to other mapmaker software.  I have created ride plans on the HD site, and will use this for my Zumo in the future.  The map converters I have tried to use do a partial job, at best.

Thanks very much Jim & Doc for posting this info, it will come in handy!   :2vrolijk_21:

Those that are having trouble w/Mapsource have you tried reading this - Mapsource Tutorial? I read it and printed out a copy to reference back to and found it quite helpful.

I printed it & read it & yes it tells you how it works.  I have used it several times for rides.

But compared to Streets & Trips or the HD Ride Planner......

not in the same class IMHO.

Never used S&T's, but have used the H-D Planner before getting the Zumo has there been significant changes in it since it can now be downloaded? Didn't really see any great advantage it provided over Mapsource before. :nixweiss:

One difference in S & T's is the ability to "drag" a route to the roads desired - lots easier.  In Mapsource I make waypoints instead.  Ends up with the same result, but its easier to click & drag.

Not sure of Mapsource abilities for allowing gas break times, lunch break times, etc.  S & T allows a lot of flexibility in that regard.

You can do that w/Mapsource. See "Selection Tool" starting at the bottom of page #14 in the tutorial that I posted. It's as easy as clicking on the route and dragging it where you want. You'll have to zoom in close after you do that to make sure you've put the route on the correct street/side of street if it's a divided highway.

I'll give it to you that Mapsource will not allow the break times.

I'll also add using the waypoint feature will really complicate your route if you are just dragging the route to where desired, but could be used to get time/distance to stops (breaks). When you use the waypoint feature the Zumo will give you time/distance to get to that particular waypoint when you are travelling along your route. This could confuse you if you didn't realize that the time/distance displayed was to that waypoint and not your final destination.

I think S&T is the same as our "Autoroute" - and the differences go way beyond that.  You can do everyting with the mouse - zoom in an out, drag the map in any direction, etc., without having to keep selecting different functions such as select and zoom, and constantly having to switch between them. Mapsource also lacks (in Europe at least) basic things like Ferry terminals.  It's without a doubt one of the worst thought out bits of software I've seen (and computers are my business!). Thanks goodness for the HD Route Planner!

Not just downloaded, Gary - automatically uploaded to your Zūmo straight from the map on screen!

You should try to get a look at S&T to see what decent route planning software is really like!
