New Handlebar Heater
« on: June 14, 2007, 11:26:44 PM »

Did you see these new handlebar heaters. They also make seat heaters. I see they make stuff for snowmobiles so maybe they will be more reliable than what were used to.

$109.95 black or $129.95 for chrome. Here's a link to the site.

I like that, I have a SEEG with out heated grips, supposedly you can't put the Harley heated grips on a SEEG yet I know guys here have done it. I am trying to figure these out, looks like you still have to run one wire from one side to the other. Looks nice - here it is cheaper from dennis kirk  http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp;jsessionid=1IQD3NVYTVXK1LA0WTKSM4VMDK0NCIV0?skuId=&store=Main&catId=217&productId=p595323&leafCatId=21702&mmyId=

With all the hassles attendant to them I'd never consider the current generation of HD's heated grips.  So alternatives are always nice to see.

The descriptions for these specify for 1" handlebars.  A picture shows what I assume to be a heating element/bar that slides in the end of the bars.  Likely what transfers heat through the bars to the grips.

The 1" bar specification is the question though.  For those that have made the change to the Wild One "chubby" bars we no longer have standard 1" handlebars.  Except that they are standard size bars from the clamps on out.  So wonder if these would still work; or not?

So the "Element" slides in through the grip endcap then the wire runs to the controller - correct? So the left hand wire has to run all the way through to the right side - what the MOCO says shouldn't be done on a SEEG?

Ceej, Harley says it should not be done; and then did it themselves to every SEUC.  So that's a proscription that one has to take with a grain of salt.  Install instructions (including a schematic diagram) for this heater system are here:

Call Wild One and check. I had the 575s and the inside was the same size as the OEM bars. When I spoke to Wild One, they told me that the bars are made by taking OEM sized tubing, and sliding a larger fatter tube over it making them Chubby, and then bending them all together as one piece.

Personally, I wonder about even heat distribution with those bar end heaters. I used to have the foil wrap heater elements, and found the heat to be uneven. The grip on the clutch side is fixed on the bars, so the heat transfer was pretty direct making them very hot, very fast. The throttle side was a different story. Since the throttle grip spins, and floats off the bar, the heat is not transfered directly. Consequently I found the right grip to be less warm than the left one. I solved this by going with HotGrips.

Your experience may differ.

I have 2 sets installed and they work very well. Considering Harley grips are $220 plus and they die yearly.

Tried it the other way first Mark.  Considered it likely that Wild1 wouldn't know about a new niche heater product while the mftr for the heater product might have an idea if their product will work with bars that are stock sized on the ends.  Have an email off to the mftr/vendor already.  Hopefully they'll answer.

Do you notice a difference in heat transfer comparing the right and left sides as Mark suggested?  Or do they same relatively even?

How long installed?  How much use?  Why is sky blue?

If you already have internal wiring it is easier. No drilling holes in the handle bars. Takes some work to snake wires with inter wiring. I would say about an hour to do the job. Heat transfer is even it may take the right side a little longer to heat but once warm no difference. You can also dim the LED's at night.

Can't tell from the photo's seen or line drawings.  Is that a push button switch integrated in to the left clamp?  If so is it on/off?  Toggle through heat ranges?  Or all of the above?  If not what and where is the switching they provide to manage the system?

Switch is intergrated into clamp. The clamp contains the controls. Push the button to toggle through the 4 heat ranges then push again for off. Hold the button for 3 seconds to dim or brighten the LED's.

Thanks Brad.  That's what the pic seemed to suggest.  But hands on verification is always preferred.

Here is the email I received this morning from a gentleman at the OE Vendor:

Don.
The Heat Demon is designed specifically for a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Are your Wild1 handle bars on a Harley?  If they are  as you describe the standard grip assembly, with the standard clamps on the mirror assembly then the Heat Damon will work on your handle bar.  The controller of the Heat Demon replaces the clamp half on the mirror assembly on the left side.
Does this description answer you question?

Roger

I responded with more clarification on what the Wild1 bars were.  It sounds, however, as if they'd not be an issue.  Anyone with stock bars would of course have no concern there.  I also asked the gentleman if the company would consider a discounted group purchase.

Will advise of response.

Don,
As usual if there is a need for clarification I know that we can always count on you to get it!  Looked at neat product, and thought about this when my heated grips give up the ghost, but after I saw mounts on left, i ran out of luck since the Legend air switch already occupies this space. Still a great idea though, John

John, my second thought (right after wondering about the Wild1 handlebars) was that the guys with the Legends shocks would be hosed here.  Continuing the conversation with them I also asked what was to be expected between right and left sides heating evenly.  He said they accounted for that with an insulator in the left side to even things out.  They are also potentially amenable to a group purchase and have promised to be in touch further.  Here's his later response:

Donald,
    Answers to your questions.

!.  The answer to this question lies in the manufacture of the grip.  If you will look at each grip, they are both the same size on the OD. To accomplish this the rubber is thicker on the left grip as there is no throttle sleeve in it.  This thicker rubber is somewhat of an insulator and therefore does not transmit heat as well as the plastic/rubber grip on the throttle side. With this differential the perceived warmth on each hand it the same.

        2.  I'm not the person who can make that decision. But I do believe that the PR would justify a group rate. I will forward this request on to our sales department. I will ask Mike to contact you and discuss your group purchase.

Thanks,

Roger
