John, my second thought (right after wondering about the Wild1 handlebars) was that the guys with the Legends shocks would be hosed here.  Continuing the conversation with them I also asked what was to be expected between right and left sides heating evenly.  He said they accounted for that with an insulator in the left side to even things out.  They are also potentially amenable to a group purchase and have promised to be in touch further.  Here's his later response:

Donald,
    Answers to your questions.

!.  The answer to this question lies in the manufacture of the grip.  If you will look at each grip, they are both the same size on the OD. To accomplish this the rubber is thicker on the left grip as there is no throttle sleeve in it.  This thicker rubber is somewhat of an insulator and therefore does not transmit heat as well as the plastic/rubber grip on the throttle side. With this differential the perceived warmth on each hand it the same.

        2.  I'm not the person who can make that decision. But I do believe that the PR would justify a group rate. I will forward this request on to our sales department. I will ask Mike to contact you and discuss your group purchase.

Thanks,

Roger

Wonder if they offer any alternative controllers?  Or one for the right side?  And in chrome?

Chrome is already an available option.  Alternative switching isn't anywhere on their website.  But I'll ask.

I asked them to make a right side controller so I could control their seat heater. I think they are working on it. I talked to them in Daytona.

Did you see these new handlebar heaters. They also make seat heaters. I see they make stuff for snowmobiles so maybe they will be more reliable than what were used to.

$109.95 black or $129.95 for chrome. Here's a link to the site.

Speaking as a member of the Legend contingency I wonder if/when heated grips go to big HD store in the sky if they "air pump" switch couldn't be inverted and placed on brake side to allow for this switch on left? john

Interesting question even more generally.  Had never even considered if the left and right clamps were just mirror imaged installations of the same part.  My parts manual isn't handy to look it up.  Anyone know?

John, had access to my parts manual a couple hours ago.  The clamp on the left and right side are both 45282-99.  So it is a mirror image part application.

What that would suggest to me here is that the heater switch still would have to go on the left side.  Obviously it must be oriented with the light segments on top.  For those considering the grip heaters who already have Legends, however, this would suggest the Legends switch clamp could be moved to the right side.  The switch orientation would of course be reversed.  I would assume that could easily be rewired though.

Terry (or anyone else who has this), does this all sound kosher based on your experience with the part?  Or is there something else about it that fixes it to the left side?

Here is the number for the sale Department:

Symtec Inc.
Mike Allemang
763-571-9193
cell 651-260-3180
fax 763-571-9194

I talked to him at Daytona about mirrored image controller and I think he said they were working on producing it. Also they are looking to use the contoller for other items like heated seat pads. Maybe controlling other items by changing the electronics inside the switch.

They are always looking for new ideas, so think away and give him a call.

The wiring would be simple...just switch the two wires where they connect at the compressor.   Might be a good option if they don't come out with a mirror image switch.  I'm going to see if HD will replace my grips one time, IF they will just provide the part and let ME do the work.  I don't want them in there f'ing around with my bars and internal wiring if I can help it.

That's a scary thought TC.  GEEZ, with all the various extra bits inside my inner fairing can you imagine a tech's eyes if he had to look inside there  :o .

The company has responded with a group rate for these grip heaters.  $90.00 black and $95.00 chrome.  I've now also seen pictures (on the Kirk website) of their grip simply turned upside down and used on the right side.  So that's apparently an option for either this control or the Legends control.

The Kirk website was the cheapest I found these from a vendor.  $123.00 for chrome there.  The mftr wants to sell a minimum of one dozen units for the price they're offering and wants to ship them all to one source for dissemination to individuals.

That means that above and beyond the $95.00 price would be freight cost (which also would apply from Kirk's) and a buck or two for a box and packing crap.

If anyone is interested let me know.  We'd need a dozen to get the price point.  A bit more than a 25% discount from the cheapest vendor so the discount amount isn't bad at all.

I understand about drilling the hole in the handlebars, but how do you hide the wire that goes back to the battery/fuse box??  Thanks.
After reading the instructions, theres no way I could do it in an hour, but it takes me a while to do anything electrical/mechanical.  Just when I think I may be done with the bike.   ::)

I don't want to sound to dense about the wire(s) that goes under the tank to the battery/fuse box.  Do these wires come out the bottom of the handlebars between the mounting points with the turnsignal/etc wires  ?

Grips-

Is anyone feel they are using a better grip than the stock ones on an 05 SEEG2?
What do users of the Kuryakyn ISO grips think of them compared to the 05 SEEG2 stock grips?

My bike had the MOCO reach bars when I got it.  Should be no problem putting the warmers in them?

Only want to do this job once installing the heaters and grips if there is a better option on grips too.  Thanks, Bob
