Continued Electrial Problem
« on: June 28, 2007, 11:09:33 AM »

Well, I picked up the SEUC from the shop the other day and finally got to ride it for a distance.

31 miles and the gauges (speedo, tach, cruise, all gauges) went out.

At least this time the horn kept working along with the heated grips.  So we made some headway, it appeared, until I got into town and saw that my low beam and taillight were out as well.

I continued to have brake, spot and rear running lights so I guess in a pinch I was legally lit up.  Didn't find a fuse blown this time so I hope it was just a connector plug that was loose.  I have continued to have the dealer track all of this since they started it all and they can damn well finish it.

So far it hasn't cost me real riding time, but with the Nelson ride fast approaching I would hope to have it resolved and road tested in the next week.

This all started when I went on the Nelson Pre-run last summer.  We have found, short, cracked relays and all sorts of crap including the rear wire harness that had dropped onto the tire and gotten chewed to hell.

I hope we aren't looking at an entire replacement of the bike's wiring harnesses but it is starting to look like a drastic measure is needed.  I don't need to be dickin' around with electrical issues constantly.  At least to date it hasn't put me on my shoe leather.

No fun guessing at your speed though or going without cruise on the freeway for extended distances.

OK, I feel better now.  I just need my POS repaired so I can feel the love again. :soapbox:

Did this just start? or what was the last (service) or Mod that you made before this started?

It has been ongoing since we started riding regularly, we found initially the tail/stop/turn conversion box was broken and faulty which would cause a short.  Most recently the heated grips were shorting things out.

Those all are ok now and now this came up after they worked on the grips the last time.  I trust they will find it as I had never lost the headlight/taillight combo before, but the gauges had gone with the other items in the past.  Not sure if they switched the power sourcing around or not to lighten the load on the other circuit or not.

I'll get some info later today or tomorrow hopefully.

Mark

I just called and they indicated they have it on the schedule for the 5th of July.

I suggested I had not had a properly operating bike since before the first of the year since each time I pick it up it has an electrical issue and if they didn't wish to see it filed for "lemon law" they may wish to look at it a bit quicker.

The service manager will be looking at it this afternoon evidently.

I'm sure you have done this but I will suggest this anyway. on mine When I remove the seat I notice that the main wiring harness will work it's way under the seat away from the frame as well as along the back fender. I move it back and it does get (Flattened) so it is possible that you sitting on the seat compress the wiring. You may alos know that the Heated grips used on the 06 were never intented to be used for internal wiring (inside bars) and if they Chaff it can cause all kind of stuff from failed grips to problems such as you are having.

Take the seat off an look at all the wire from the top of the tank as well as under it as see if you notice anything while you are waiting on the dealer.

If they are unable to resolve your issue before your trip (if it was me) and I know your not! I would RENT an Ultra to go on rather than ruin a fun time.

Wishing you luck

We're on that track, the original problem was exactly what you point out, so the wiring is all tied up nicely so as not to sag on the tire etc., and the main harness is most likely the culprit now.

They found the chaffed wires in the grips too and that was resolved for the time being.

I have my DWG3 as a back up and I'm not going to worry about backup plans yet.  You are right about riding with issues however and your point is well taken.

I hope this is a one off problem and not anything you or others need to worry about.  That would be all we need. >:(

Roger-Sorry to hear about the electrical gremlins with the trip coming up.  I hope they will try to look at it again before the 5th so it doesn't come up as a rush rush job.  Good luck!

Roger,
Best of luck getting the electrical issues worked out. You guys are going to have great time. This time I'm the one that will be sitting at home checking posts while you ride.

Good Luck,
Ed :pepper:
