Brian ....your
I hit the damn coyote at 120 mph. Well it destroyed many plastic parts on the bike, all on the right side.
If it werent for the trailer I really believe that I would not be here today.
That's a great story and I'm glad to hear you were OK.
I have a similar story of how I believe my trailer saved me from further injury...
In 2003 my wife on her '99 Low Rider and I on my '97 Ultra with American Legend trailer in tow loaded to the limited including a set of golf clubs and we were headed to Vancouver to visit our son in college. The first day we made it to Sault Ste. Marie at the top of Lake Michigan. The next day was a glorious sunny morning and we headed out at 6:30am to make the most of it. Going through northern Wisconsin cruising along on an empty two lane road at 70mph enjoying the sun warming our backs at approximately 11:00am I saw a deer up ahead crossing the road from left to right. By the time I reached the spot it was off the road heading for the trees. Foolishly I pointed to the deer so my dear riding behind me wouldn't miss this awesome sight. Naturally as I pointed to the deer with my right hand the bike began to slow... Keep in mind this whole ordeal happened in a matter of seconds. I mistakenly had looked in the direction I was pointing and BANG!
I didn't know what the heck happened, but the bike started to shutter and swerve. Fortunately I managed to bring it to a safe stop along the shoulder of the road. When I went to put the kick stand out I noticed that the engine guard was smashed up against the tank and not much was left of my lower. My wife stop behind me and was a mess... Shaking like a leaf as she saw the whole thing happen and thought I was a gonner.
Obviously you no doubt have figured out that I hit the deer's buddy. The dreaded second one! My wife says that when I hit the deer and we must have still been going close to 60mph. I hit it so hard with my engine guard that I sent it flying through the air into the ditch on the far side of the road. My wife couldn't believe her eyes.
As for me I could barely walk and my foot was all swollen... I thought for sure it was broken and my bike was a mess! Great, just great - here we are on the second day of a month long trip to the west coast and this happens.
Well, I pulled off the remains of my lower fairing and we headed for the next town west. Found a Ford dealer open who straightened out the engine guard so it looked half decent after washing off some deer guts all over my bike and trailer, and we went for lunch. In the restaurant the waitress brought a bag of ice and I propped up the foot to try to hold the selling to a minimum. The next day I bought some new boots which when worn real tight serves as a great cast. Thank goodness we were able to keep going and within the week I was playing golf in Vancouver!
To this day, my wife and I credit the fact that I was pulling a trailer which saved my life when I hit that deer... With me, the bike and the loaded trailer weighing in at roughly 1,500 lbs travelling at approximately 60mph the deer definitely slowed me down in a hurry, but with all that weight moving that fast, it kept the bike moving forward in a straight line enough for me to keep control and come to a stop.
Needless to say - I don't point anymore!
... and I'm very grateful that I'm here to talk about it.
Take care & ride safe,
Grizzly
