Sounds like great progress today in Karen's post from this evening:

TUESDAY, APRIL 08, 2008 07:12 PM, CDT

A brief update,

Josh had a good session of "stepping." That's what they call it. I talked with his PT, Brittany and she gave me his permanent schedule today. We have another full week next week, every day, so I've pretty much determined, we'll stay the weekend and go home next Friday. This coming Monday, will be our last Monday, and then Monday's will be dropped. He will then have, probably two Friday's, and they will be dropped. Then we'll come up on either Monday nights or early Tuesday morning's and go home after Thursday's session, for a nice spell at home, every week. That way, we're only spending 2-3 night's away from home each week. Certainly much more do-able than being so far away in Atlanta, and there being no light at the end of the tunnel. Like I have posted before, this treadmill training, is comprised of 60 sessions, so we are counting backwards towards this goal. It will be long and laborious, and I'm sure Josh, at times, will grow weary of it. Please keep him lifted up for a strong will, to see encouraging and positive results, daily. I can handle it, it's tiring, but I'm up for the challenge.

I asked Brittany today, how the "tone" in his left leg was doing. They were concerned about this last Thursday, the first day on the treadmill. She said, if it didn't calm down, he might not be a good candidate for this program, and they'd have to drop him. Well, today, she said he was much improved in this department, so much so, that they have been able to slow the treadmill down, to a more normal walking rythym....about 2.3 mph. He still has one knarly, rubbed off, skin spot above his right ankle, that they are keeping a good eye on. The other spots are scabbing over, like rug burns and appear to be healing OK.

What I'm most thankful for, is his attitude seems real good. He showed me today,on the way over to Matt's how he is now, flexing and extending his left foot @ the ankle. I was thrilled! Up and down he moved it. He's never been able to do this, and I'm just believing that this is just the beginning for that ankle of his. It's just amazing what a few days on that treadmill is doing, with God's help of course! Keep on praying guys! Tomorrow I'll get to watch him through the door. He said he went thirty minutes today and this is really good.

Well, I'm off to get a little laundry done. Have a good night, Karen

I just got the most AMAZING news!! Ken just got off the phone with Barry. He told Ken that he'd made a deal with Josh that if he wiggled them toes TODAY he'd spring for a hunting trip out west when he got better. To his breathtaking astonishment and Josh's dogged determination he WIGGLED THEM TOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am beyond stunned and thrilled as I'm sure everyone sending out thoughts and prayers and chants will be after reading this!!

WAY TO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JOSH!!!

Thanks to the powers of positive prayer and thought and faith from EVERYONE on this great site and above us, Josh has this awesome news today!!

Barry asked that I post this great news and to thank everyone and to encourage us to keep those thoughts and prayers coming!

Just WOW!!!!  :)

YYEHAHAHAH! That is AWESOME news! Laser White Light is working! All together now..........FOCUS!

Post from Karen re: Josh update on the Caring Bridge Website
THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2008 01:43 PM, CDT

Hey everybody,

I typed up a nice post last night, and pressed save, just to see it evaporate before my eyes! This has happened before, and I don't quite know why this is. I was too tired and frustrated to type it all over again. So, I'm here today.

Josh is having a good week of "stepping." Brittany continues to work him very hard, so much so, that he asked to walk in today, saying he was tired of sitting in the wheelchair. We had just gotten to the building! I couldn't find a close spot to park, so I thought, so much for him walking in on the walker, and I dropped him by the entrance wuth his chair. I made the loop around the block and I must say, I'm getting VERY good at parallel parking! I managed to squeeze inbetween two cars quite nicely. And there didn't appear to much room either. I was quite proud of myself. It was the last handicapped spot in front of the building, so, off I went, walker in tow to find him. I figured he had already gone up to the gym and I would leave his walker with a very disappointed Brittany. As I was walking to the elevators, there he was, waiting for me. Ha, I was very pleasantly surprised. This is not like Josh. Every chance he gets to wimp out of using that walker, he usually takes. Not today. I was very proud of him for this and told him so.

His morning sessions take place on the 11th floor treadmill. So, this requires a lot of walking for him when he's done. As, Brittany doesn't let him come downstairs in his wheelchair. I just love this girl :) He has to leave the treadmill room, go down a long hallway, turn a corner, down another shorter hallway, through some doors, to the elevators. Down to the sixth floor, through the lobby, into the therapy gym. It's a pretty good distance, on top of him having just completed an hour on the treadmill! Than, he gets a full 1/2 hour of strengthening exercises and some independent walking.

I have started to ease back into running again, and I am re reading my non marathon runners guide to running a marathon, book. There is a story in there about a young man when he was 20, who suffered a severe cervical spinal cord injury, C3-C6. He nearly lost his life 3x, being paralyzed from the ears down. He took part in this group of marathon runners, and although he did not run the marathon, one year after his accident, he managed to walk 15 miles, while the others ran the marathon. He said, he simply refused to listen to all the negative "you will never be able to" comments made to him, by the health care professionals, and worked his butt off. First, not being able to move anything, all he did, was use his brain, because he said, that's all he could actually use. He would lie there for hours, visually moving each muscle and limb, mentally, until one day, his big toe moved! I wish you all could read this story, Josh is going to read it. I was very overwhelmed by this story and the power to overcome. It reminded me of that eighth day when Josh moved his toes for the first time, how ecstatic we were.

Something wonderful is happening. He is meeting some wonderful young people here at the Mac House. This started yesterday. He has now realized an empathy for the situations that some of these people are going through and told me last night, that there are some "really nice people here." I haven't been able to get him out of our room, to know this for himself. I'm so glad this is happening. I liken it to when he finally came out of his shell @ Shepherd, when I had to go home for two days in November and leave him there by himself, when he was an inpatient. This is when he finally turned the corner, reaching out to others who were worse off than him. He is presently in the 2nd floor living room chatting with a few of his new friends.

I learned of an Amish family last night at supper, whose horse and buggy was hit by a vehicle, paralyzing their 20 year old daughter. She is currently an inpatient at Frazier. I am going to try and speak with them tonite at supper and ask how they are doing and offer any support I can. Josh and I saw them outside today when we were heading to the car after his session. Did you know that every 41 minutes someone suffers a spinal cord injury? The highest percentage coming from car accidents, sports injuries and diving accidents are next. We know families from all categories. These injuries are so devastating, so when I hear of another family,it upsets me so. Just a little fact for you.

Our good friend Joseph Toomey and his mom Regina made the pilgramage back to Shepherd yesterday, to start the Day Program. Please keep Joseph in your prayers and pray for something really BIG to happen for him while he's there. It's an exhausting pace, we know all too well, and Regina will need all the strength she can muster, daily. Especially pray for God's provision for them. Thank you.

Have a beautiful day today, we thank you, as always, for your love, prayers, and support. Karen

Well here's some exciting news from Karen and it is posted at Caring Brdige so I imagine it is to share with everyone.

SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 2008 06:32 PM, CDT
Good Evening All,

I'm typing from Paducah, as we did not make the trek back to Louisville as planned today. Josh has been given the week off and it's time for Barry and I to share with you, some news that we have held very close to our family.

The weekend before Josh's car accident, Josh and his girlfriend Audrey shared with us, that they were expecting a baby. This was very overwhelming for us, and as we were trying to absorb it, we were hit with Josh's devastating car accident, leaving him paralyzed, as you all know. As you can imagine, the severity of this kind of a mistake your child makes, weighed very heavy on us, and we decided to keep this very private and to ourselves until the appointed time. Well, little Brody Collin, arrived Friday, April 25th and weighed 6lbs, 15oz & is21" long. He and Audrey are doing very well, and he is a beautiful baby, favoring both of them.

I am reminded of Psalm 139*13-16, when I have held him. "For thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, And my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from Thee, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth. Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Thy book they were all written, The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them." We will face this chapter in our lives, like all others, with diginity and grace. God never leaves us or forsakes us. He is ALWAYS a source of comfort and strength. We will stand firm and strong, pouring into this little one, all that we can, nuturing and loving him, along the way.

I thank you, that you would not be judgemental, but be prayerful, during this time. We love you and God Bless You. Barry & Karen

And more from Barry,

SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 2008 07:59 PM, CDT
Hi All,

It's Barry...

I know I dont get on here and update much...as Karen does such a fine job. But I just had to get on after reading Karen's last update and add a few words.

I have spent many years teaching my children what Gods plan for life is...and have hoped and prayed that they would listen. But some times things don't go as we would like them...but that's OK...God is still in control. I haven't quite known how to deal with Josh's girlfriend's pregnancy until just a few days ago...when little Brody was born...and then it became all clear. The beauty of what God has created was just overwhelming...and when I got to hold him...my heart melted. He is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen...and I have had three of my own.

What has seemed like another bad in life has turned out to be a positive... and only God can turn a bad into a good...period!

With love and humility,

Barry

Hi all, its Barry.

I have to say I am sorry for not getting to the site as of late.  But Josh is progressing.  It is a long slow battle and we are determined to win!  He is using his wheelchair less and less.  He walks like a toddler learning to walk...but it is a beautiful thing to see...as he shouldnt even be alive.

I really do miss all of you...from the bottom of my heart!!! And RJob...I have never even met you...and you have become a friend for life! JR and Mark...I am coming your way as soon as things get about half normal?

I cant thank you enough for all the prayers and support. This has been a life changing experience...to say the least.  I have only been able to take a few short rides since Joshes accident...so I guess I am a posser now!
HaHa!!!

I just wanted to take a second and let every one know something thats hasnt been common knowledge until a few days ago.  Shortly before Joshes accident we found out that his girlfriend was pregnant.  We didnt know how to deal with this...and just kept it inside the family.  But as of Friday night at 8pm...my little grandson Brody was born...

And there is nothing that will change a mans heart like a little baby in his arms... I must say that only God can make a bad thing into a good thing...and this little baby changed my mind...and melted my heart!!!

My wife and Josh will actually be home this week because of the baby...so we are a family again for a short time...

Once again I miss you all and cant wait to see you again,

Barry,

Not sure I know anyone that has dealt with all the trauma and drama you have and are going through with Josh and his recovery let alone the new family and all that comes with it.

You are lucky to have such a strong family and support group here and at the caring
bridge site.

You and Karen are obviously strong and supported with your faith.  I hope to meet you one day in person, maybe when we get a chance to ride Josh will be able to come along as well.

Maybe that's a good goal for a ride, we all get together when you and Josh can
ride together (2 up or otherwise) :2vrolijk_21:
