Holy crap! Just started catching up and saw this. So sorry to hear about it Chuck, but glad you're OK. That's the first thing! Don't worry about your investment. If you're keeping the bike. Paint it anyway you want. If you're getting rid of it, leave it stock! But I'm glad you're fine! ;)

We haven't discussed it except for a few brief minutes on Friday. I think she'd like to do something different, and be a part of the process. The claims rep is coming out this week to go over the dealer's estimate and come up with something I can work with.

"just one of the many reasons why I love her so much.....I am a very lucky person to have found someone as wonderful as her."

What wonderfully sweet things to say about one's wife......(kinda sounds like Chief knows that wifey will be reading this???).  Sounds like something I would try too!

That kind of stuff never hurts, especially when it's true.

To cc everyone else, good to hear you escaped unscathed.

As to paint. You can "always" do a custom paint. You are limited on to how long you will be able to get CVO tins. And then you have the issue of dealers not selling them without you turning in parts you already own.

My vote; back to stock and get another set of tins when your ready and have a custom paint done.
At least a dozen times a year there are complete body sets on eBay.

Good luck.

Just saw this thread. (late as usual)  Anyway, if this isn't done yet, my advice and something I've always wanted to do with a CVO would be this. Get your new paint set from the MOCO and strip off anything that didn't get damaged. Add some custom touches (pinstriping etc) if you want and then have all of the paint work clearcoated at least three maybe four coats. You'd be surprised how much different your bike would would look if the paint had some real depth to it. And best of all as some have mentioned, it would still have that CVO look. I don't agree with those that say paint it differently. Check out any dealership and you'll find a bike sitting on the floor on consignment that's been there forever because the owner doesn't understand that what was trick to him doesn't add value.

My friend dropped his 100th anniversary Ultra.  He ordered all the tins without any returns except for the tank badges.  That's a bit more reasonable.  He asked what if the badges were stolen and the answer was you'll need a police report. I'm sure this return policy deviates from dealer to dealer from the official policy.  How can they make you send your stuff back?  You don't lease or rent it, you buy it.

Getting more and more strict everyday.  The dealer we tend to deal with more than others insisted that they could not sell my husband a replacement dash insert without getting the old one back.  His old one is peeling.  Of course this would be covered under the extended warranty, but the part is only like $35, and the deductible is $50, so it was cheaper to just order a new one.  Took the old one off, but need to trade it in to pick up the one on order.  They told us there were susceptible to a $5,000 fine for not getting the old stuff back ----- and that was a fine they were not interested in incurring.

That sounds a little out there, especially since some dealers are selling the parts. I bought a Sreamin Eagle FatBoy teardrop air cleaner from "another" dealer after my dealer refused to sell me one.

I am currently in that predicament. I ordered a new tank insert and the dealer won't give it to me without turning in the old one. Problem here is that it is a special ordered part, which you guessed, is paid for in advance.
So we are in a standoff.

Although, I think there is some merit to what the factory is doing, protecting their CVO line, but, dammit, I own the bike and I have the serial number to match the parts, I should be able to buy it.

I think we just need to find the right avenue here. Years ago the feds ordered car manufacturers (read the big 3) to make parts available for 10 years to the public. I don't see why the moco can't be ordered to sell us parts that we deem need to be replaced. Heck, I can buy a $850 painted to match king tourpak with a Screamin Eagle medallion in the lid, but I can't buy a stupid little emblem for my gas tank  :-[

When the painted script fell out of my Derby cover and was replaced under warranty I was told the same thing in regards to the $5K charge the MoCo would pass on to the dealers if part wasn't returned. Since the part was being replaced under warranty it didn't matter to me.

Haven't had to replace in parts that may be deemed CVO protected for my bike as of yet, but would be a little upset if I was told that I had to return my used/old parts. They aren't leased I paid for them already. >:(

Well, I guess it's all settled now. I'm going custom paint. I'll be keeping the CVO color palate and going with a design more inline with what I think a bike of this calibre should have.

I've picked Platinum Custom Painting www.platinumatl.com to do the painting. They have painted some stuff for Hank Young, or local Biker Build Off winner, so I feel I'm in good hands. They have a good artist / airbrush painter on staff to help with finalizing the design. This is all new territory for me so I'm sure I'll be learning as I go.

Thanks for everyone's input on this. I hope I'm right on this one.
