I heard ya 2Lane.

My 2 year mark is September 1, 2008.  If I had your tools and knowledge I'd rebuild it myself with the parts list I've gathered in the forum but I don't so I'm going to send it in to the Florida boys or GMR and have it built correctly.

I do get to go back to the dealer on Sat -- I was detailing my bike for the first time after my last trip and discovered they dropped my gas tank!  A slight ding and scratch mid center of the left side of the tank but the show stopper was the bashed in left tip of the tank --  no way that could happen unless it was dropped.

Here are some pics.

Sorry about the :jack:

BTW:  The Tech (a master mech) told me the day I picked the bike up that that was his last day and he was moving on to another job.  Do you supposed he thought I was stupid and not catch it sooner or later?

Sheesh.....

Ouch.  I fell for ya man.  That's why I have to have my baby away from home and out of my sight.  Hope they take care of it for you.

Mark, I see from your tag line that you have the Michlein tires.  Are these the ones in the H-D p&a book?  How do you like them compared to the lops?

Mark, what a drag about the tank.  Can't catch a break sometimes.  Just don't be getting a new one too close to the end of April, we don't want anything getting in the way of Sedona.

Mine is having them replaced now. My tech. told me there is no part # and they are only available for warranty repair.  Kinda looks like Fel-Pro header gasket material.    I know, I know :worthless:, but I didn't have my camera w/me when I dropped her off.

They seem to hold pretty well - but they are not Avons or Metzelers.  I really liked the Dunlop E3 - great grip and very long wear.  I just wanted to see if what kind of mileage I could get out of the Mish-lynns.  I got 9k out of the E3 on vacation this summer before I ran over a damned tractor key outside of Durango - still have it on my key ring.  I probably had another 3-4K left on the tread (I was loaded up on the bike and I weighed 250# at the time and ride pretty aggressive... 'cept I couldn't keep up with AK, erniezap, or Mr. Magoo in Nelson!).  The E3 is my fav so far -- very sticky, great in rain and as a Vietnamese friend says "lasts long time".  Avons and Metz both have that stickyness and rain handling but only last 8k miles.  I wanted to try Miss-lynns because "all dealers had them in stock" - my dealer had to order them of course.  I probably will go back to E3 because of the handling and life of the rubber - your mileage may vary.

Respectfully,

Mark

That's terrible about your tank Mark.  No way someone didnt' know they had done it.  Good luck!

Yet another reason (like it needs any) why my bike will never see the inside of teh dealer agani unless me or the bike is broke down.

Here's a pic of the old gasket that was leaking and the "new" style replacement. Looks graphite colored if you can't see it in the pics.

Jacked Thread cont.

Returned from the dealer -- SM says there is no way I could have dented the tank with my knee!

They will check with local shop to if it can be repaired with matching paint or replace whole tank.  Hmmm  does 2008 6 gal tank fit my 07 frame????

Absolutely no way would I accept a repaired paint matched tank.  It was flawless in new condition when you gave them your bike and you should accept nothing less be returned to you.  A new tank is the only option you should accept.

Many years ago, I had a tank dropped and damaged by a dealer - who repaired and repainted it without telling me.  When I picked up the bike, I thought they had put someone else's tank on my bike because the paint did not match.  When they fessed up, I went ballastic.  They decided the path of least resistance was to replace the tank with a new one...

Agree w/Scott concerning this. Not only what he said, but this might affect your fuel capacity in the tank also. :nixweiss:
