I'm sorry.  No I've got this sketch piece running around in my head.  It's Screamin, Howie and Twolane totally blotto drunk (in black and white) staggering around the garage trying to bleed hydraulics.  We be stooopid.

To be safest.  Definitely.  Though I never do.  If the line is more than a foot or so long it'll never backup that far.  And using dissimilar fluids gives a far better visual for what you're pumping.

I use a one-way valve in the line anyway. Shortly after the bleeder.  So it's never an issue.  Speed Bleeders are also an option if someone wants to spend the money.

If someone is using a straight line in to fluid I'd still suggest having a helper open and close the bleeder as you pump the brakes or clutch too.  Not because it's absolutely necessary but because it'll all get done far more quickly than it would with the push and pull you get operating the hydraulics by oneself.

hmm... hmm... brake fluid will absorb H2O - get the fluid hot - boil out the H2O - spongy brakes result.   Same with condensation (careful where you store your bottles of brake fluid).   I don't think I would use anything but brake fluid in the container when bleeding the lines - even with a one-way valve - JMO!   :2vrolijk_21:

What a hoot though!

We could start a Three Stooges Reunion Tour.  We get to bonk Howie on the head though.  A lot.

LOL, not sure it'd matter how many times we boinked Howie. He seems pretty resilient. Would be fun trying it while he's doing donuts around the garage floor in his tenny boppers.

Completely agree Scott that the potential for issue is there.  In (careful) practice, however, on cars and bikes have never had it be a realistic issue.  Definitely don't just walk off and let the system set as you go to take a wizz or do anything else that takes a while.  But once the line leans and bends a bit, even with a fully purged system, there's rarely continuous contact in your bleed line and (done right without delays) you're always pushing it downhill.

Dedicated catch bottle with its own one way valve eliminates any such concern.  I've got a couple.  Honestly rarely use them though.  The visual of fluid in to fluid is an assist.  On cars where I can't see the corners anyway I do use them though.  Or the pneumatic vac assist bleeder.

Now, having said that, if you go to the store and see a fancy air/vac bleeder to run from the caliper end and think "oh, hot damn, this will be great for the bike" I'd suggest against it.  They will agitate DOT5 fluid.  That's very bad.  Even for DOT4 the reservoirs on the bikes are so small it's very easy to pull them dry if you're not careful.  Perhaps even worse is you can splatter fluid out of the reservoir when using them.  Drops of brake fluid all over your paint.  With the bikes we just have to go slow.

Catch the Howie with the bleeder wrench!

Jim, we could gang up on him.  And if we got too drunk and had to fall down we'd just fall on him.  It's all good :2vrolijk_21: .

My ancient method is to let gravity do its thing - and them bleed out whatever is left with the "pump and release" method...  (knowing full well that description can be used for the entertainment of the sicko gutter crowd!!!)

Hmmm....sounds like my clutch is working as designed, I think I'll leave well enough alone and not mess with it. On my 20K I'll ask my mechanic to look at it. I am way too good at creating problems for myself.

If time allows I'll gravity bleed DOT5 systems every time on a bike.  That stuff is just so touchy.

I know that you guys are talking about the Clutch but I have a trick you can try it works on the brakes so I don't see a reason it won't work on your clutch.

Go out tonight and pull in your clutch or your brake which ever you think has air in the lines.
Tie the lever as tight as you can to the handgrip.  By morning all the air will rise.

Go out and ride your bike. You can try this method a couple of nights and see if it doesn't solve your problem.

Air in the silicone fluid is notorious for being hard to bleed.
