This Issue is NOT new and WIll be comming to a town or city where you live.  The AMA has been on top of this for the last 4 years, They have even gone so far as to award Sound metters to different Motorycycle clubs.

For more information on what stae & Cities are looking to incease revenue (or to stay away from) you can Contact Mr. Wood 614-856-1900-X1225, or email rwood@ama-cycle.org

Just as a general question, what is the most commonly used db level for exhausts?

I've tried to read up on this and can't find the exact formula for taking the sound level measurements.  Are they stationary, or reving the motor, or drive by?  If they do this at a rest area I would think they are reving to some rpm and then measuring from some distance.  Is the measurement at a 90 from the bike or directly behind, albeit some distance away.

Most people with a upper level sound system or home theater probably already have a sound pressure meter of some sort, weighted and unweighted.  Weighting makes a difference on the lower frequencies when using the meter.

So I'd like to set up my own test at home to see what might happen to me on the road.

Let me know.

Thanks.

This is a very good question.  What meters are most commonly used by the police to check the Dbs

A lot more than 4 years ago!!! The AMA gave the outlaw biker culture their 1% moniker long ago, when they stated that 99% of motorcyclists are good law abiding citizens. So the outlaw biker culture embraced the fact that they are the 1%ers, which they still wear proudly on their colors. You ride a bike, and love riding a bike, and embrace the culture, you're a BIKER! As such, you'll continue to be alienated from the "straight" world, no matter how straight you are. Now if you didn't ride a bike, would you even notice this phenomena? Now you know how many of our races and cultures feel when they're singled out, discriminated against, and stereotyped! Just don't take chit from no one, and live your life the way you want. Like I said, we're all responsible for ourselves. I could GAS what other people think, as long as I know that I do the right thing. Way more colorblind assholes in this world than "outlaw" bikers!

The exhaust that is on the bike is NOT drag pipes or does it have the baffle removed. Its just a pain old sampson dual exhaust. The sound just happen to come in at 93 at idle.

Samson’s True Dual crossover systems are C.A.R.B. approved and offer a show quality finish with Samson’s exclusive Quad Chrome plating process that provides ultimate adhesion and corrosion protection. True Duals eliminate the rear crossover pipe to the front pipe providing for a cooler and improved ride for both rider and passenger. All of Samson’s exhaust systems have been designed and tuned to produce maximum horsepower, torque, and awesome sound. This system is ready to bolt on right out of the box and includes 02 sensor ports and plugs.

FEATURES and BENIFITS

As a side note I have the Samson calibers.  They are a four stage true dual system and really helped produce the HP and torque along with the HD race tuner.  I will admit they are a little loud and you have to be careful in the city but they have saved my ass a couple of times around cars with cellphones to ears etc.  (loud pipes save lifes   MINE)

So based on what you say J-Carr, it's our fault because some dumb kid full of piss and vinegar ran around with loud pipes late at night.
...........................................................

hunter, you and I know that this reaction by towns all across this country isn't due to one kid full of piss and vinegar.  It's due to the large and growing numbers of supposedly mature adults who for what ever reason think it's OK to irritate the crap out of the rest of the population.  Just because they leave a few bucks at the local watering holes doesn't justify acting like a bunch of jerks.  I've been a bystander when groups of jerks have left en-mass with plenty of revving of engines and WOT launches meant only to irritate and show those locals how "tough" they are.  Reminds me of some of those really bad motorcycle gang movies.  Sure, there are plenty of others that need the same smack upside the head, like the folks with the jacked up trucks and no mufflers, the big rig drivers with the Jake brakes, the ridiculous sounding exhaust on the little "tuner" cars, the stereo's from Hell, etc., but the largest and most visible group is bikers so they get the attention.  Seems a little ironic, folks seeking attention by making noise finally get some attention, and they bitch about it.

You're right Jerry.  I'm just pissed off because I always hated mass punishment.  Majority of the problem will solved if they just say they are not going to tolerate late night rackets.  Then someone gonna come forward and claim discrimination and profiling.  As for the groups,  even as adults sometimes we just follow the crowd.  One guy starts to rev up and the rest follow through without thinking that when you put on a patch and ride with others, you're under microscope and every move you make being analyzed and/or rationalized.
I have RH-TD and I know fro sure at idle it is not even close to 90 db.  However, I'm also guilty of using the pipes to get someone's attention after they've cut me off and got me angry.  I also think that if they hand out warnings instead of tickets and a lecture, people would be more co-operative and won't react negatively (like when the cop told cowboy that he's doing him a favor and not giving him a ticket with points which is bullsh&^ since it wasn't a moving violation).

As for "loud pipes don't save lives", I don't agree.  Ironically, just yesterday on the way back from work I go through a small town with a narrow main street.  I always try to keep the rpm down because sound echo's in narrow roads.  A car in front of me making a right turn, halfway through his turn I tried to go around him without crossing the center line.  A girl comes flying in front of me from the side street on the right, she didn't see me and couldn't hear me.

So, I hear people say just that, at idle I'm too loud.  Okay, where are they placing the meter for this measurement?  I can't believe they are sticking it up the tail pipe or even a foot or two behind.  Lots of pipes can be quite quiet at idle only to bark very loudly when you twist the grip a bit.

Can anyone state what code the police are using and where is it explained so people know the rules?

Thanks.

It depends on the type and the brand of the meters they use.  The manufacturer dictates how a meter is used based on how it's been calibrated.  The average is about 4 feet high and the distance suppose to be where it'll be heard by people like from street to side walk or residents but it almost never followed.  They also have an error margin between 2-5%.  Again manufacturer will publish that.
