I lived in Virginia for 20+ years (72 thru 92) before being led astray by my employer and moving to Chicago, so if nothing has changed since 92 I can tell you that it doesn't matter if you're from Mars; if they catch you with a detector they will immediately confiscate it.  Non-residents may get a pass on the ticket, depending on the officer.  There were signs on all the major highways entering the state advising everyone of this law, so no one could plead ignorance.

How would they deal with in-dash mounted installations?  Confiscate the vehicle?

When you have it built in or screwed in

JC, when you're screwed in maybe you're just screwed  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Screwy part is I used to live in Virginia.  Just never had a radar detector so never worried about the big signs all around the highways saying not to have one.

This conversation jogged something in my post-Thanksgiving Turkey fogged memory.  Thought I remembered reading something a few years ago about the Commonwealth of Virginia getting its proverbial teat in a ringer over radar detector confiscaton and changing their law.  Did a quick check of the state statute book online and confiscation is no longer legally required or even suggested.

It's in the state code at

Used Beltronics 946 on FLTRSEI windshield mount , but just had too much vibration at speed to do much good. Tried their terrible helmet earpiece & little antenna reflector kit that clips on top when you have it in your pocket. Not optimum for receiving signals there (DUH) and only worked so-so as far as decent warning distances. Now use Valentine One, which is rated as the best in nearly all testing and it works like magic in autos. Not much of a SERK windshield to mount it to, and on the bars is way too visible and something else to remove when parked. Just got their concealed display (2.5"x1") for it and will see if I can come up with a place to mount it on a SERK and run the detector elsewhere. Supposedly,  the "V2" model detectors don't emit the signals that the cops pick up on their receivers where it's illegal.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, grc,
Virginia is a beautiful state.  I wish my home county of Mercer, in WV, which borders Bland Co., Va., would secede.  It was attempted a few years back, but failed to even be mentioned in the Legislature.  I guess I'll just have to remain a Rebel, living in a Yankee State!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] Later--HUBBARD

O.K. just for the record, tell us which is which, since we're neither? [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Yeah, 'er 'uh, JCZ,
Virginia was one of the original Confederate States.  The Western part of Virginia supported the Union, seceded, and became the Great State of West Virginia, on June 20, 1863.  Later--HUBBARD
