Van, there are several threads in here about radar detectors.

Here's a couple links that I thought were interesting:  http://www.stealthhog.com/

http://www.radarbusters.com/

RadarRoy has posted on this web site.  One of the things that I didn't like about it is that it has to be mounted behind a clear windshield. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Check out the Valentine one .  IMHO best one out there but pricey.  It not only detects well but tells you in what direction the threat is coming.

If I remember correctly the guy that invented these was affiliated w/the Escort radar detectors and left for some reason that doesn't come back to me at the moment. They have been rated as good detectors along w/the Escorts. Just looked at there website and found this link - Tips for V1 use on motorcycles… a few do’s, one big don’t very informative, and talks about my concerns (water/moisture) of detectors on scooters.

Van,

There has been several posts on this subject, but I'll give you my take.  I bought the HD Radar Detector because it is made by Escort.  I have owned several Escort RD for my other vehicles.  They have saved me several tickets, and if it was just one, it would pay for itself based on ticket cost and insurance.  I know there is some debate over whether Valentine or Escor is better.  I just figured they are the best, and since HD has a mount and it is all set up for mounting on the bike, I wanted to make it as easy as possible.  See my pic below.  One note is that you will have to modify your dash pad in order to use the HD mount. The nice thing is that it is realatively inexpensive to have an upholstery shop modify the dash pad, ($80).  Also, with the HD system, the RD has a quick disconnect so you don't have to leave it on your bike when you park it.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Like you I've owned Escort products in the past and have been very satisfied w/them. My only problem/concern/dilemma is the fact that it has to be mounted (cutting) in the inner fairing. I would like to see (MoCo you listening) produce a handlebar quick connect/disconnect for this RD. This option would give one the ability to take it off and move it to the next motorcycle purchased. That for me would be a no brainer accessory then.

I just paid today a $204.50 fine for speeding (80 in a 55) in Fla last week.  It was 7:15 am and I was on a county road and the only car I saw for 12 miles was the trooper!  >:( I never considered a detector for my bike because I did not think I would hear the warning and they did not look good to me.

Hey dOOd,

Look at "new items" on their site and check out interface for cell, radar, gps. I'm considering going this way and or blue tooth mainly for cell, however if can be done with one interface and include radar and an upgrade for gps the $$ are probably well worth it. Have had good luck with their products in the past. They also have some nice and variable useage handlebar mounts as well.

Thanks, I see the information you are speaking of now. Also found this while on that page - Legal Speeding Radar Case for Escort 8500 Radar Detector. This may be an option for those not wanting to use the H-D brand, and still have a nice detector that can be moved from bike to car, and can be weather protected when on bike.

I ordered a RX65Pro from Radar Roy.  Got great service and a great price.  He is an upstanding guy to deal with.  If I remember correctly, Bell and Escort are now the same company.  The Valentine only has the arrows, otherwise it's no better- and in some cases worse than either the RX65 or the 8500 according to most tests, other than those Valentine conducts himself.  Situational awareness and experience with the RD will more than take care of any arrows.  I've only had mine for 5 wks, and I don't really feel like I miss the arrows.  Learning what frequencies are used in your normal area of travel will tell you where you need to be looking.  Remember- the RD only tells you sooner than visual recognition to slow down.  Also, sign up for Radar Roy's email service before buying.  He often has discounts through his email newsletters.  I think he also offers like 10% off to CVO forum members.  To learn more than you want to know, try the RD forums.

D00D,

Not sure if you are aware, but the HD RD does have a quick disconnect.  The only thing left on the bike is the inner fairing mount, which isn't bad.  Aslo, there is a speaker as part of the mount.  Just wanted to make sure you were aware.

Thanks I'm aware of that. It's just for me personally I don't like the fact that there will be holes cut in fairing. If I were ever to sell my bike I would feel obligated to let the RD go with it since there would be a mount left for it. I would rather go with a mount on the handlebars that could be removed and installed on the next bike.
