SO grc, the SE plugs ( or any other plat high end plug) is just hype??  and yet you give recommendations for a NGK plug.  Why use a NGK and not just a standard plug?  There are alot of considerations ( and preferences).  An SE triple plat plug mixed with either SE plug wires or another brand high end plug wire will give you a better spark (hotter) due to less resistance in the wire and plug.  ..................................................................................................
HighJagger;  You are close.  If you are treating your motor to the best, why not plugs?  Plugs are typically rated on performance and not longivity.  There is a specific interval to change plugs no matter what the performance is.  You see some people change their plugs once or twice a year.  Is that right?  Nooooo.  You change plugs every 20k miles.  You check the plugs for wear, burn and gap at regular intervals in between.

Not what I said, try reading it again.  Platinum plugs are not hype in terms of longevity, as I noted, but advertising the SE as a performance booster is pure hype.  Also, if you look a little closer I didn't recommend NGK over standard, I recommended NGK over SE split-fire for those who desire a platinum or iridium plug.  And I would love to know how you tested the temperature of that "hotter" spark with your SE plugs.  Got any pictures of the apparatus you can share?  Based on your statement about resistance, I assume you don't run resistor plugs or wires.  I bet the neighbors just love all that interference as you ride by.  Finally, being just a dumb automotive engineer with only 35 years experience, I wasn't aware that plugs came with a performance rating.  How does that work, the higher number indicates more power?

A SE triple plat plug mixed with either SE plug wires or another brand high end plug wire will give you a better spark (hotter) due to less resistance in the wire and plug.

Not likely. The coil will only output enough current to go from point A to B, given the resistance between A&B.
Raise the resistance, more current to overcome the increase, not a hotter spark at the end of the line.

If it takes 10,000 volts to jump the .035" gap on the plug or it takes 20,000 volts, the gap is the same so the spark is the same.

Raise the compression - the speed_ the load and the resistance at the gap increases so the the firing voltage is higher, but he gap is the same and the additional energy expended serve to clear the gap at the current load.

At least this is how I remember from "When I was back there in seminary school"

18 years in the new car dealer fiels I saw more spark related problems due to the picture below then I ever saw with spark plugs.

Yes , I think that one don`t have to override things .

Here's my $.02.  Leave your plugs alone.  Quit picking on your plugs.  If you don't quit bothering your plugs, I'm turning this car around and we are all going home.  Seriously, are you having a problem with the plugs in your bike?  You have a new bike and the plugs, I am sure, are fine.  Leave them alone.  Pick whatever plugs you decide on, and grab a spare set to carry around with your tools.  I know I have been pleased with myself on many occasions over the years because I had the foresight to have an extra set of plugs with me.  But if you suddenly have a problem, that is remedied by a quick change of the plugs on the side of the road, chances are there may be another problem that got you there in the first place, and once you have that problem diagnosed and repaired, you'll be putting in another set of new plugs at that point.  With my theory, I don't have to have all the technical knowledge that a lot of the people on here have.  I think I'm just using a common sense approach and someone with more knowledge here will either say I have a good point, or they will tear me to shreds because of my naive outlook.  But for the reasons I stated, I don't bother with spending a fortune on a back up set of plugs.  I get just what's in it now, and know that with everything functioning properly, those plugs will perform fine for the limited life I would expect to keep that set in my bike.  Okay, maybe that was $.04 worth.

True Duane, people will change their plugs on a regular basis, but have wires that are 9 years old! Besides the spark jump, many stock wires will break down over the years causing much higher resistance.

I've been using NGK Iridiums for a for about 3 years now. I like 'em. Can't give you any hard reasons why, but it "feel" (seat of the pants) like they make a little bit of difference.

This is my opinion. YMMV.

Well, here is at least one for the "I get it" column in the poll.  Anyone else want to admit to having enough common sense to ignore the latest marketing BS used to separate you from your money?  :confused5:   ;D

Jerry

Oh btw, if you really want to spend some bucks on the ignition system, at least hold out for a product with a snazzy name and much better ad copy.  I'm particularly fond of the ads for the "Pulsestar" plugs.  Nice jazzy scientific sounding name, and lots of talk about ionization, capacitors, and really amazing mileage improvements.  Only $25 per plug, sounds like one hell of a bargain to me.

I would list a link to their web site, but for some unknown reason their web site doesn't seem to exist anymore. :nixweiss:  You can still find their ads in various mags like Popular Mechanix, however.  Well worth the newstand price for a copy just so you can be enlightened about the latest technological breakthrough in spark ignition.

I was at the dealer today and asked the parts man what he recommended for a backup set of plugs for my bike.  I was ready for him to give me a sales pitch.  He told me to use the stock plugs and not to fall for all that fluff.

Man, an honest guy working at the dealership, he won't last long.

Actually, he's been there a while and he's pretty much the "go to" guy in parts and the customers seem to like him.  Other than being perpetually a half hour late for work, I think they like him and will keep him.

Mail them to me...I'll paint them any color you want with only a one day turnaround.  For a limited time, you will receive one used spark plug with your order.
