Break in.....BREAK IN.........DID SOMEONE SAY BREAK IN.....LOL......ok ok ok ok ok BREAK IN....
Ok now we need some discussion about break in.....how many ways are there to break in one's engine.....LOL
OK, I'll open this can of worms. When I referred to break-in, I was referring to a used engine with new heads, piston rings, lifters and cam/cam bearing installed, not quite a whole new motor--no bottom end involved. The only break-in I had in mind was seating the new rings. Yes, there are numerous philosophies on new rings, from a few hundred miles of generally low, but varied RPM's to a couple of 'redline and hold it for a few seconds', done two or three times. All I know from my days of British sports cars and now bikes is that I've used the 'low RPM-varied for a while' method repeatedly with good results so that's what I did. Maybe there are other methods that also work well.
So when my motor was back together, I rode it gently for about 200 miles, varying the RPM's but keeping them below 3000, changed the oil again and it was back to normal. I have near zero oil consumption about 6000 miles later so I'd say it worked out fine.
