Howie;

cam manufactures spec the valve lift on the cams. In other words a spec'd valve lift of .625" is the actual lift of the valve at the valve, not the cam lift. to figure cam lift you need to take the spec'd number and divide it by 1.625 which is the stock rocker ratio. For example:

.625 (valve lift)/ 1.625 (stock rocker ratio) = .3846" of cam lobe lift.
the same cam with a 1.675-1 ratio roller would yield a valve lift of .644 valve lift (.3846 x 1.675)

I'm aware of that Jim. Wes even did the math in his cam spec if you note the "Net .366" in the CR Spec. Still looking to determine how much the difference in the 2 S&S cams might affect my riding style. I'm afraid my riding style might have me beating it even more trying to get the most out of the milder motor! :nixweiss:

That is a great idea, especially if you could make it quick release change over like the tour pack. ;D

That's a GREAT idea Terry! A detachable engine!!! What a cool concept!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

If only, would make for some easy testing out different motors and much cheaper.

Howie as I am sure you know the 625 will have a bit more on top than the 585, 585 will be have more torque down lower. Really depends on where you want it but honestly i would not think the the 585 lift vs. the 625 lift is going to be that much harder on the valve train.

I say go for the 625!

Thanks for everyone's input, thoughts and opinions. I just got off the phone with Vern and I've made an executive decision. We're using the S&S 585G and keeping the motor at 9.8:1 CR. :o

This CR matches up nicely to the displacement according to S&S. There was no simple way to up it to 10.25:1 for the 625G's, w/o remachining the heads or going with custom pistons. The S&S springs for these cams are good for up to 600 lift cams. The 625G's need the S&S springs good for up to 700 cam lift, which would be way more than ever needed for the 585's. ???

So after considering EVERYTHING, I'm going to attempt to build an engine that lasts at least 50K miles on the top end and 100K on the bottom, and not have to rebuild it every year. So some of youze might have a shot against me now! Notice I said might! Far as racing's concerned, a lot of it's how you ride, not what you ride!!! ;)

So Hoist is actually leaving power on the table to attempt to get more reliability and longevity. WTH is this world coming to? ::) ;D ;)

It's a sad day, but a smart move!

Hoist must be getting old, leaving H/P on the table.

What's next, , , a bagger?

Or OMG a trailer?

Based on the following quotes by you:
Quote
I would have done everything the same way, except for one thing. I wasn't smart enough at the onset to realize that my $30K new bike would need a replacement non-HD motor.
Quote
Everything to excess! All at once, not a little at a time. Flat out WFO baby! All or not nothing! but when it's all, look out!!!
Quote
I've lost faith the last year, and her woes are still stuck in the back of my head. And it'll take a few trips with her, without issues, to start restoring that faith. But I'm confident I've got the motor in her that I need to get there!

You say leave the power on the table go mild instead of wild now and I look back and see just the opposite.  Why pigeon hole yourself since you wanted the power and to make it reliable and spent what you had to in money to get you what you were after.   If you cant then my question is based on your previous statements why not quit dinking around witht he 110 motor and go to a 120 like Ken.   Yes you have tons invested, but why not put that 110 motor back together in the milder form put it in a box for what if and just suck it up and get a 120 or other motor and have the same numbers and it be stock and run for a long time or go wild and if it chits the bed just be prepared to put in another motor.   From the start you had said you knew it really needed anotehr motor.   Yes chit can happen, but a build a year and the frustration is not worth the loss of your riding season or sanity imo.

Just curious on the thought process your going through and knowing how I like power wondering now that you have had it how you are going to be happy, because I know I wouldnt be.

No experience on the green bike yet, but she has Bob Wood's TW408G cams and S&S gears.  I've ridden two bikes (113cid and 117cid) with these cams and am still waiting for my smile to catch up with me.  Really can't tune in on this "noisiness" of which everyone speaks about Bob's cams.  They develop power quick, fast, and in a hurry.........right now!   :2vrolijk_21:  .650 lift.

good choice howie with the 585...didn't think of it before, but are you familiar with r&r cycles, manchester, new hampshire?...their most popular cam is their 615/585...and it's bases on the s&s585

Howie, don't think you want 10.25:1, getting into the area of detonation, and need for additives in the fuel. You want a reliable running bike, two up, and luggage, you probably better off at the 9.8:1.
