Cams for 103"
« on: December 29, 2008, 12:37:13 PM »

I have an '06 SE Ultra with 16,000 miles on it.  As I've stated on this site before I have problem with oil blow-by into my air filter and this last year I thought the engine started making more noise.  Everyone I took it to basically said the same thing, "Oh, that's just normal for a Harley".  I wasn't satisfied with that answer and now I think I have found someone who just might know what the problem is and how to fix it.  The guy owns his own shop about 300 miles from me.  But he is a relative of a very good friend and I know he wouldn't steer me wrong.  He figures it's the cams, the cam tensioners and the oil pump.  He thinks a new cam kit (whichs also contains a new oil pump) will take care of my problem.  Anyone been down this road or have an opinion?

Next question.  If I have to replace the cams should I put the stock Harley cam back in or spend the money and have gear cams installed?  If so, what cams?

dOOd as usual is giving you some good reading on the subject with the bolt in gear drive cams.  Several have the 575's from Zippers and several the Freedom Yull brother cams.  If you ride most of the time below 3500 rpm's, the 575's are the choice.  If you want more on the top end, go with the Freedom's.

I would replace the chain with gears, mine let go at about 34k.
Put a 251 cam in and had the heads ported while I had it apart (Mine was still under warrantee).
All I had to pay for was the parts for the cam & having the heads ported.

Wow it ran great after that.

As Dood posted the Freedom YB13 or the Zippers 575 cams are the way to go for the 103 CV0 motor. Both of these were designed for the 103 CVO motor and work very well. As Boatman stated the Zippers comes on a bit sooner (about 300rpm) than the YB13 but the YB13 will carry out further. If the crank runout is less than .003" than the gear drive is the way to go. You will never have to worry about tensioners again. Also the Billet SE cam plate and pump combo is the way to go if you are replacing these. The only drawback to either of these cams is you will need to get the bike tuned after the install.

Thanks for the reference to the other posts.  But they are so lengthy.  I'm looking for the short answer.  But from what I'm hearing the Zippers Red Shift 575 TC103 cams are probably the way to go.  Most of my riding is in the 2,000 - 3,500 rpm range.  Is the Billet Cam Plate and Pump combo that was mentioned the Screamin Eagle one from Harley?  Is there another or better option?

The most common "other" option would be the Feuling cam plate and oil pump.  It does a perfectly satisfactory job also.  But it costs more.  I just used a Feuling pump, plate and lifters on the SERG.  But it wasn't because of any religious faith in the greatness of the parts.  Scored a deal on eBay.  If not for that I'd have used the SE pieces.

I used the Feuling Oil Pump and their lifters when I did mine.

You guys forgot to tell him if he is going to keep the stock cam plate he should use the Baisley oil pressure spring. There is nothing wrong with the stock cam plate if he is going to change the cams and install a fueling oil pump.
