OK, so the mystery is solved ?

so what's the problem with the petcock ?
What caused it ?

the solution ?  ride on reserve until new petcock is obtained ?

HeHe!!! Funny one again Mike! ;D :2vrolijk_21:

Mystery should be solved now. Prolly just misassembled the petcock. But for 18 bucks, he'll just replace it instead of fiddling with it. After he said he got it started in the RES mode, I knew that's all it was. Then Z Man helped him with the fuel in the float bowl and it's impact thing. It was as simple as a bad/misassembled petcock in need of replacement. Options from 15 bucks to well over 100! His choice on what! We'll wait and see what he does! ;)

Hey guys...I'm still like you...Don't know why the petcock didn't work when I put it back on after disassembly  :confused5:  :nixweiss: when it seemed perfectly fine and worked fine before I tore it apart and Frigged it up  ;D  I do know there is only two possible ways to put the spring in the valve body and that is on the lever side of the body in between the flange body or in the vacuum side between the flange body and the vacuum nipple; it can't go anywhere else. Now...since I did the Howie/Mikey suck test with the spring assembled on both sides and did not get fuel with the selector at the "on" position but did get fuel from the lever at the "reserve" position and the bike starting at the "reserve" position and not the "on" position; the only thing I can conclude is the damn petcock ain't functioning properly. I also got to say I was sucking that SOB till my ears popped and no fuel at the on position.

So...What do I do?

(1) Buy a new stock petcock from HD for $88.00 + Tax since they don't sell the internal valve body rebuild kit anymore for this item

or

(2) Buy an aftermarket petcock and shut off the vacuum line to the petcock and bypass or remove the the petcock vacuum line and VOES vacuum line and replace the VOES line with one single line for operation.

Right now I'm leaning to the aftermarket petcock and removing the petcock vacuum line and running a new single line for the VOES

Decisions, decisions...Will Let you know  ;D  Thanks guys for all your help

BTW...Talked to Howie today on the phone; them folks up there in NYC all sound like they eat lunch everyday with Tony Soprano....
Oh and when ya get ready to have a phone or face to face conversation with Howie; say what ya got to say fast, because if ya stop to breathe for just a second, ya may not get another word in for an hour or so....Seriously though; it was good to hear from ya Howie and I enjoyed tha conversation  :2vrolijk_21: ;D

you should be able to buy an aftermarket one for less than the HD 88clams

or, you can go BIG TIME and get a Pingel  :pepper: :pepper:  GIDDY UP !!!!!!!!!

if you do, just block off the vacuum line that used to run to the old petcock

and REMEMBER TO SHUT OFF THE PETCOCK EVERY TIME you GET OFF THE BIKE  !!!!!!!!

if you don't, you'll know why the next time  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

it will continue to flow fuel, the float bowl will overfill and make a big mess of things

Been out of town--Blaine, I got your PM this morning.  As I recall from dismantling mine, there is a nylon core with holes in it for "reserve", and "run".  This core turns with the exterior handle.   Might be that you put it back together with the core mis-positioned.  Sounds like you've figured out the spring/diaphragm position thing already--that can do it, too.

There is even another option:
Pingel Vacuum operated fuel valve.  Chrome and $169 but its solves the problem and satisfies the need for Pingel and Chrome!  They have three configurations, left side inlet, outlet forward, down or rear.  Part nos 720-000,001,002.

If there is more gas in the tank than the reserve level I do not believe it would make a difference.

This is the Pingel that wouldn't fit my bike.  Somewhere on here I went into a good deal of detail about that battle.

I think this is true.  It seems like turning the handle to "RES" lowers the pickup pipe inside the tank.  But I'm still not sure (been a while since I had that thing off and apart) if the core can be installed in the body of the petcock incorrectly or not.

The answer is yes; it can be installed incorrectly an that's what I did. I'm up and running again  :2vrolijk_21:

OK...here's the deal (At least from what I found when tearing it apart and putting it back on three more times   >:(  ;D) with everyone's help.

I tore it down at looked again after reading a piece from google search.

1. The spring goes on the vacuum nipple side of the valve (In between the center piece (core) that houses the rubber diaphragm. The springs pressure between the diaphragm and the vac side wall holds the diaphragm snug while allowing the outer edges of the diaphragm to float open when the select lever is turned to the "ON" position. Then when turning to the "OFF" position; the vacuum stops and the outer edges of the diaphragm releases back to it's natural position thereby closing off fuel feed.

2. On the side of the center housing that holds the diaphragm between the diaphragm and the lever side of the valve is a small hole on the center housing with two small lines if you will like Mike stated that when positioning the core back onto the lever side of the valve, must be mounted parallel with the nipple that feeds the fuel line to the carb. When the hole is in this position it allows the fuel to flow on through to the fuel line to the carb.

Don't know if this makes any sense and I wish I could explain it better; but after a few times of rearranging the center core it works perfectly now...I'm riding again as soon as I get my A/C kit on...Maybe tomorrow or Thursday.  :2vrolijk_21:

Oh...I am gonna buy me another aftermarket petcock (No Vac) and store it away in the event I have a future problem and just do the vac bypass thing like Howie and Mikey talked about. Can get some pretty Arlen Ness Petcocks for about $20-$30

Guys...Thank you all for your input and help; I couldn't have done it with out ya  :2vrolijk_21

Hey Thanks Brian...I gotta tell you; everyone from the site who put their two cents in on this one are the reason why I got this done. If not for everyone here; I'd probably still be yankin hair out the side of my already bald head. All the folks who responded with their thoughts and ideas are the ones who figured this one out...My hat's off to them all  :2vrolijk_21:

Now to figure out how to mount my SE Ignition Module after I get the Ness A/C unit on. The A/C unit should be no problem, the directions are clear and understandable; mounting the module in place of the existing stock one is gonna be a bit of a mind teaser for me. I gotta figure out how I'm gonna get the stock one off as it is being held on by what I think are rivets on a type of plate next to the battery box. I suspect I will have to remove the rivets and replace with nuts and washers. I didn't look real close; so I'll get to it after the A/C unit....OK guys...Thanks again for your help  :2vrolijk_21:  ;D
