Thanks to CVO_Yes, bisounours, and everyone else for this one.

Thanks for posting.  It looks to apply to the 08 MY only.  The 09's are not mentioned.

The bulletin IMO says it has more to do with the potential of a replacement ECU as below:

A recent refinement to the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System)
calibration of 2008 Touring model motorcycles adds compatibility
with Michelin replacement tires offered by Parts &
Accessories, accommodates police usage performance
requirements and permits re-use of Hydraulic Control Unit
(HCU) if Electrical Control Unit (ECU) replacement is
required.

I e-mailed my service manager yesterday about the ABS upgrade, or whatever they're calling it now.

Quote
The poop on the brake deal is copied below from the H-D Service Bulletin. H-D has us address it if the bike experiences the "squeal" as outlined in the bulletin.

"If customer is experiencing excessive rear brake noise, obtain the ANTI-NOISE PASTE KIT 42551-08. This kit is designed to address rider complaints of a high frequency rear brake squeal under light load and low speed braking conditions."

So, if you're experiencing the rear brake squeal, let us know and we'll get the paste in.

So far I'm still good to go with just over 6,500 miles and no squeals yet.

I've been playing with the ABS as I've gotten braver in my braking.  On gravel it will not lock up either front or back tires.  On pavement I've only tried the rear brake at speed.  What happens is I do get some tire chirpping, but it's straight and quick to the stop.  As I've been told, on corners we're on our own and no braking system will keep you upright if applied in sharp turns.  After testing the straight rear braking, I would agree that in a turn your best shot is to straighten out your line and then hit the brakes hoping you have enough room to stop.  If you watch the original ABS promo video on the HD site, this is what they do when going around a gentle turn and have to stop.  They straighten out and end up just over the center line of the two lane road.

I feel confident that the ABS in most cases will still be your best chance for a safe stop.  I read once that a race rider was testing the early HD ABS in '08 and said that he felt he could stop quicker without the ABS..... BUT that was only because he had his full attention focused on stopping and keeping control of the bike.  He admitted that this is not the case in normal riding and PANIC is the term he used in stopping.  In a panic stop the ABS is thoughtless and the rider does nothing but mash the pedal and lever full and hang on.  In that case he said the ABS has the advantage.

Sorry for being so redundant on the above description, I'm sure we ALL know what I just said.

So if you're getting squeals at low speed from the rear brakes, call the dealership and get LUBED... :P  :P  :P

Thanks for putting up with my novels...  :(  :(  :(

This is what I sent to my service manager that he made his reply to:

Quote
I've read on the CVO-Forum that there may be something to do on my ABS brakes for the ’08 SERK.

An improvement in your ABS system is available.
This operation is free and takes only a 1/2 hours

This is what one of the members got from his dealer.

What's the poop on this?

I'm not sure now if there are two bulletins out about ABS, or if he's just taking out of the bulletin what he has needs to answer my question.

Capo, if you could send me a copy of the bulletin you have, I could pose a new question.  My guy is always very forward with me on anything I've asked him in the past, even Shovel Head questions....

Thanks.

There are two different brake related bulletins, one deals with the rear brake squeal on the '08 Touring models, and then there is the one mentioned in the title of this thread concerning a new calibration download for the ABS controller.

Jacques, you seem to be the first to know this.
I was reading through the bulletin (Thank you cvo_yes), which is merely a week old. It refers only to model year 2008,
but since July of 2008 the Moco has produced ten of thousands of Touring bikes of the 2009 model year. Now if the
fix was available since July 2008, why did it take them more than six months to come out with the bulletin? Anyone?

Ride safely,
Louis

According to the bulletin, this upgrades the system to make it compatable with the Michelin tires, with are not available for '09 fitment.

Unlike the 110 "enhancement", which took two years to to be published, this ABS "refinement" is much simpler and cheaper so it only took six months.  It appears that they are indirectly saying that the '09 models already have the changes incorporated, but it is strange that they don't specifically say it.  BTW, it's not unusual for service bulletins to take a long time to reach publication and distribution.  Same sort of corporate inertia exists in the automotive world.  Simple stuff that doesn't require approval at top levels gets communicated quickly via things like tech tips.  Stuff which requires more thought to avoid providing ammunition to legal beagles gets bumped up the corporate ladder for approval and spends time in the office of the general counsel.

If you read between the lines, it appears the original calibration didn't comply with police performance requirements and it also required replacement of the hydraulic control unit if the electronic controll unit was replaced.  This would be rather expensive, and I'm guessing the real motivation for the change is to reduce their own warranty expense since all the affected bikes are still in warranty.  Other than the onetime costs associated with publishing the new calibration and the bulletin, the actual "refinement" operation is only costing them .2 hours times the dealers warranty labor rate, so less than $20.  After the "enhancement" program, this is chump change.  As for the comment about compatibility with the Michelin tires, I'm not following that one.  There are plenty of other brands of tires besides the OEM Dunlops and the Michelins, and I'm not aware of a need to recalibrate an ABS system based on the brand of tires anyway.

Yeah, that's the part that puzzles me; I've had ABS-equipped cars for 20 yrs and never heard anything like this.
