I picked up Petunia (09 SERG) on the 6/12/2009  The next day I stopped by the dealer and pointed out the gap to the service tech.  I mentioned to him that this was a known problem on the 09 SERG's and asked him to fix it.  He told me that when I bring in Petunia for her 1000 mile service he would take care of it.  I sure hope he does.

I agree that something should be done.  It is a safety issue and need to be fixed regardless if they think I plan on buying another seat.  I had Ms. Piggy (02 FLSCTI) and still had the stock seat when I dumped her for Petunia.  It is sad that their top of the line bike has quality control issues like this.  I never had any trouble with Ms. Piggy even after 43,000 miles.

Hey everyone, I recently got my new FLTR and was kicking around the idea of what to do with the seat gap issue. Since the stealer hasn't been of any help I decided to take another avenue. After research on the forum and some thought I went with the stock seat with some modification. No more gap, fits great and I think it looks kicking! I've been on the forum in the past but haven't had a picture to post so hopefully I can get this posted and it will come thru for viewing.

I had the stock seat modified for more of a custom fit for myself by the seat shop and in using a better quality foam/gel with an actual/genuine piece of bison leather which is somewhat thicker material than the original the gap is gone.

I just filed a complaint about the seat with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is the first step in getting a manufacturer to recall defective equipment.

:soapbox:These stock seats are not safe. Mine popped off the under seat mount tang at about 60mph. I ain't gonna put up with this piece of sh*t seat and I'm doing my part to force the MOCO to deal with it. I'll probably end up buying a Corbin but its a matter of principle and safety here. :soapbox:

Great idea.  I just filed a complaint as well

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/Complaint.cfm

The text I entered - "Improper seat fitment (sizing) caused seat to become unattached during normal riding. After hitting a bump on the highway, the front portion of my seat became unhooked causing a very dangerous condition. Had I not been going in a straight line, the seat could have slid off the bike."

What's a recall? Oh ya...it happens as a last resort. Moco is being good to any one who asks about the seat problem... so I give them credit for affirmative replacement...Just don't ask about the front tire...You'll get an ear full of how you are responsible for extream tire wear cupping...It is avoidable if you never apply the front brake...therefore you caused it... :drink:

Agreed, however I'm on my second seat and the third is on order.  They haven't resolved the problem, they're just replacing the seats with the exact same ones only new.

I just shot a video to demonstrate the seat flaw. As soon as I get a chance (I just moved, need to find my usb camera cord), I'll post the video on youtube and a link to the video here. All I do in the video is get on the bike, lift my ass off the seat and then sit back down (with force). This simulates hitting a hard bump while riding. This is all it takes to detach the front of the seat on my bike.

I won't accept a replacement seat unless it is re-engineered with a less flexible seat pan and proven to stay put.

Granted, a recall is the last resort and is generally voluntary by the manufacturer unless it is a serious safety issue. The gov't can take a company to court to force a recall. I don't think Harley wants that kind of attention. This is a very serious safety issue. Somebody could get killed if the seat pops loose. Once the front of the seat goes, the only things holding it on are the grab strap and the rear tang screw. For me, this has gone beyond just wanting to fix the seat and the fugly gap. This is about potentially saving the lives of fellow bikers.
