110 fear
« on: February 07, 2009, 12:38:05 AM »

Hello, I haven't been a member here long, but I have noticed a lot of negative comments about the 110. Stop it, you guys are scaring the hell out of me. I just purchased a 09 CVO Ultra Classic, haven't rode it yet due to weather and I am already afraid of its dependability. Maybe I should have kept my 08 ultra! My excitement of purchasing the CVO is being replaced with a nagging feeling I shouldn't be feeling after paying over 35k cash for a bike. Are they really that bad? Do they overheat a lot, do they really have bad cranks, valve train and other issues. Does this mean I will probally spend more time on my Heritage waiting for my CVO that will be in and out of th shop?  HELP......My Wife is gonna kill Me the first time it has a problem...........( she wanted me to wait till 2011)

So far there really hasnt been to much bad press on the 09's.   I have had a few small problems with the 09, but it has not yet been for a head leak, cam compartment, or compression release.   As far as the cranks go i wouldnt worry about it, it is the same crank that was in your 08.   Only difference is you may be putting a little more power to the ground to start.

My only suggestion to you would be pipe, open air breather, and a tune with the Mastertune product over super sert or power commander.

Enjoy the bike its the fastest color :)

I hear ya!  Went through the same thing.  Just remember more of the negatives are reported than the positives.  If you look hard enough you'll find that the positives well out weigh the negatives.

I beleive for about 99% of the people that have  09 110" cvos it is all positive, with really very minor problems and none with the major problems of the 07-08 110" cvos.  Doc

Congratulations on your new ride. So which of the problems do you actually have? Don't let the ongoing discussion make you feel bad about your new bike. It is one of the finest on the market (except the silver/blue ones are slightly better). There are probably some modifications you'll make, but those are done by most Harley owners. Other than this, ride it like you stole it, and while you can't ride because of the weather, at least make plans on where you are going to ride, when it gets better.

Ride safely,
Louis

Thanks for all your input, glad to see people are having good luck with 110. Does anybody in the New England area remove catalyst from the header pipes on the 09? I read where a shop in AZ. does it (Fulsac, or something). That's a long road trip for me.

Congrats on your '09 cuse.  Don't worry, enjoy.  I do think that the '07s & '08s having been upgraded are doing much better now.  My dealers two local stores and had no problems with any '09s or '07s & '08s that have had the recall/upgrade/program.

Had the same fear after I ordered my 08 CUSE3 and started reading this form but have over 10k miles and the only problem I have had was the heated grips. Did have the upgrade done because it was there(Hope it dose not cause problems) There is a survey going on now and 61% would not get rid of there's even for all their money back (sounds like a H##L on an endorsement to me). Ride the crap out of it and have fun

Sraisinner,

I can feel for ya. I went through exactly the same situation. I went to the dealer to get a filter for my Heritage and fell in love with the Maroon SE Ultra that was setting on the floor. I had a 09 Ultra on order for delivery in March. I came home and got on the forums and got really scared when I read about the problems with the 110 engines in 07,08. I actually decide I would not think about it any more and go with the Ultra on order. I went back to the dealer and talked to the mechanic. He said that there was a problem with the head gaskets on the 07 and early 08's and that he had repaired four of them himself. He said after the repair there were no further issues. He told me the "fix" was built in the 09's at the factory. Well long story short. I bought the SE and can't wait till spring to get some miles in. I hope to see some dust (not much) on the Heritage wile I enjoy the Screamin Eagle.

It is unfortunate that there is a lot more written about negative experiences than positive experiences online. When everything is going well what is there to say...I had a great experience? When things aren't going well everybody wants to speak their mind about how bad the negative experience was and they want their voice to be heard. Before the advent of the internet when somebody had a bad experience they would go out, get drunk and vent to anybody who would listen, times have changed and it is much easier to vent and reach a much bigger audience. Look at the nightly news, almost everything that is reported is bad news. Why? I guess that the headlines are more interesting when there is bad news. You never hear too much "good news" on the nightly news report.
I personally don't spend any time worrying about my 110 engine, life is already too short. When I am out riding my SERG I am having a great experience. I had a problem with a leaky transmission gasket not too long after I bought the bike, I got it fixed...no big deal. I really enjoy my SERG and wouldn't trade it for another bike. I am certain that when the weather clears and riding season is upon us, you will be out riding your CVO Ultra Classic and having a great experience...don't worry about it. Enjoy and ride safe.

Have no fear. I have the 08 CVO Ultra and I put 15230 miles on it last year with no major problems what so ever. towards the end of the season the rear head started to weep a little oil. It is going in for the upgrade in march then it will be ready for another year. It is by far the best touring ride that I have ever owned. Congrats and enjoy your new ride.
