I cant picture how this works can someone explain in more detail or draw a picture. You leave the stand down and then do what?

The jiffy stand locks in when the bike is resting on it proper. hence you can push the bike, while it leans on the stand, without the stand giving away. The deciding factor is the floor, of course, which you may ruin (if you care) or which may prevent the entire trick (being too uneven). All in all its something I would not do in my garage.

Ride safely,
Louis

PS: Is this thread actually about
a.) How to move an E-Glide around in the garage?
or
b.) The ability to manage the bike at slow speed while sitting on it (and finding it is too high)?

You stand in front of the bike, with the bars full to the left.  Push the bike back  from the front, the stand slides, and the bike parks itself nicely in a space on your right (i.e. the bike's left) !  8)

The thread started with how do you manouvre such a heavy bike when it does sit so high and weigh so much when you are a short fellow such as I.
It has led to recommendations on lowering the suspension (Various options to allow you to get flat footed) and jiffy stands for helping with moving the bike when off it so its turned into a bit of everything really which these often do.
Talking of which I followed your advise with the lowered shocks and wondered how you have them set up now as mine are perfect for height but they do bottom out a bit and as we are the same height and weight I wondered what settings you were using.

Best regards

Well, mine are tuned to the 50/50 position, and riding two up they'd tend to bottom out when speeding over something like a railroad crossing. Other than that (and I have learned to avoid speeding over rr x's courtesy of my wife smacking the back of my helmet some years ago) they are fine and a good compromise between riding alone, with luggage, two up, and two up with luggage. I find the road holding superior to the stock shocks, and the lowering of the rear makes they bike perfect for handling during slow speeds or stopping or when parking.

Not nice being smacked on the back of the helmet  especially by the wife :D I'll tweek the suspension to match yours before my wife gets any ideas about smaking my helmet, its bad enough when she headbutts me from behind  ;D

cheers as always

Shocks lowered and adjusted to the mid point, height and balance now perfect for the shorter legs, weight distribution appears to be much better and handling is perfect. Still get bounced out of the seat on the really poor road surfaces from time to time but overall the best £500 I have spent to date.
Now to improve the exhaust tone........

Yes, the course is indeed good.  But it's a racket - no reason why a good rider can't get gold on the first time if they are good enough. It's a plan to get you to come back and pay again!

They'd have to be tall platforms!  :D

Jim

Not wanting to brag but I got a gold on my first attempt and Mike was my instructor 8)

Good to hear that there is Gold in them hills in Wales. I did hear that Mike had to retake the eye test though as he was handing out Gold instead of Bronze badges for the first timers and now he is taking it safe and just handing out silver as he can clearly see the differance. :P

there is no big secret in handling bikes easily around no matter how heavy they are (our boys sell Boss Hoss too 8)).

It's just confidence and practice - as with most other sports.

Have two friends assist you at first and just start. Try to balance the bike standing upright and hold it with just one fingertip. Stop worrying as your friends first hold the bike, than just step aside for some inches, finally for yards. Then start moving it the same way, first everybody holding the bike later leaving you alone but ready to assist any second. Just get used to it, use every stop to practice. After some time you just stop thinking about it and it get's easier and easier and finally it will be just normal. It's not a matter of strength or hight but of balance. You will never get anywhere if you use the kickstand-workaround or any other cheating - just make a sport out of it and you will succeed ;)

After all: there is no serious harm to be expected if the bike falls (as long as no part of your's is under it  ;)). On the contrary - it's your chance to practice picking it up  ;D

And afterwards it's just a good feeling to be able to handle your own bike in any situation whatsoever, not just in sunny weather and on straight roads.

Honestly, I'm not the muscle-type myself and after succcessfully surviving my 50'th birthday I seem to develop a certain general dislike of physical adentures. But I make a point of needing no assistance when moving around or picking up my own bike - call it a matter of pride if you like  :D

Do you really intend to bother your insurance with some scratches on the engine guard  ::)

you are right, the more I move Big Bertha around the more I realise a lot of it is confidence and practice.  Still wouldn't want her to fall away from me though!!

just let her fall - and experience for yourself it's not really a problem. You will get on a lot easier once you lost the fear of not letting the bike drop down.

There are a couple of companies offering a reverse gear addition to the harley six speed  not seen one here in the UK but it sure would come in useful when you get yourself in a tight space. anyone have any experience with these?
