I've also been told that the non-metal parts (fairing and saddlebags, esp.) have much less clear painted over the color.

Spyder, we don't have any metal painted parts.  No painted frames on the 04 and newer CVO touring models.

d'oh, talk about brain fart  ;D

Ok, that's my Christmas gift to everyone  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

And Mr. Rogers says, when the nice man writes about saddlebags and fairings you have to remember your motorsickle has more parts than that boys and girls.  Otherwise you'll be having a brain fart.  Say it with me boys and girls.  Yes.... "Brain Fart."   That's good.......  ;D

I'm still really skeptical of the "too much clear coat" explanation.  The SEEGs have multiple colors in the same places as the SEUCs and none of these types of problems occurred on them.  Also, if you look at the poll that is stuck at the top of this forum section, almost all of the problem bikes are black and charcoal.  The green and black bikes are just as dark in color, so why don't we see the same thing on those? It could be something as simple as a new painter or sightly different conditions or process.  When they 'hand paint' these custom paint jobs, it has a degree of 'art' thrown in there along w/ a great deal of skill.  Wouldn't take much of a change to mess up the final product.  I saw a candy cherry '05 seeg have blemishes in the front fender and gas tank.  They were witnessed by more than one person and after a few days they were gone to never reappear.  This occurred after delivery, so the paint was not all that 'fresh'.  Most that have sprayed the 'trick' custom paints will admit that there's a 'art' to it as well as the technique.  So........ There may not be a amount of the green and black with paint problem but there are still some out there, mine being one. I noticed a difference on the bags between the top and bottom when I got it and it appears to be getting worst. I'm just happy it's only the bags and not anything else.

Well I took my bike back to my Dealer today to show them the problem with the paint!  ((( I used a trailer,, so ezz guys!!)))   I got a flashlight to show them the milky look of the bags,, front fairing and tank. She told me she would call Harley,, and I told her they would prob tell her,, that they knew nothing of a paint problem.  So she called,, talked to someone who transferred her to someone else,, and after she got off the phone,, I was told,, that they DO KNOW there is a problem.  Now,, from the horses mouth,, since I have seen many explanations as to why the bikes have this milky color to them is..............
  The problem is caused by TOO MUCH clearcoat,, and the reason is,,  they applied extra layers,, so you couldnt feel the hand painted lines between the different colors of  paint  on the outside of the fairing,,  the tank,, the bottom of the bags,, and the fenders!!  I dont know about everyone elses,,  but the tops of my bags are fine,, and so is the inside of the fairing,,  BECAUSE,,  they only have 1 color of paint on them!!!   If you think about it,, it makes sense!!!
  So,,,  the next thing she told me they asked her to do,, was to take the bike to GOOD painter,, like to an auto paint shop,, and see if the could buff some of the clearcoat off.  She wanted to know if I would ok them to do that.  I asked her,,  if she had a $36K bike,,, would she want them to do that to hers,, or have them give her all new tins???  She understood what I was asking her. Anyways,, to make this short,  I told her I wanted the paint to be RIGHT!!!  It is fine with me to send it out of house,, so to speak,, to see if they can do something with the paint.  She said the would send 1 bag out,,  have them see if they could do anything with it,, and we would go from there.  She said HD would certainly be glad to give me new tins,, ~IF~  the buffing didnt get the bike,, back to where it should have been in the first place.  So I left the bike at the Dealer,, and they even let me leave my TRAILER there at the OWNERS home,,  waiting for the REP to take a look at the problem,, and that is the rest of the story for now............
   So EVERYONE have a WONDERFUL,,,  MERRY  CHRISTMAS,,,  and if you want me to bottle up some of this WHITE STUFF outside,, and send it to you,,  just let me know !!!!
     ~~~ sorry my post was so long~~~~
I just wonder why the slate isn't milky looking. It looks fine as far as I can tell. I know it is a lighter color but you would think you could still tell? Well maybe it will really look great when that is buffed out also?
All I know is,,  she told me they knew of a great body shop,, and they were going to give them 1 bag to ~EXPERIMENT~ on,,,  so I am just hoping all turns out well,,  but if not,,  she said she was sure the MOCO would be more then
 glad to replace the defective paint parts,, because we tried to get it fixed,, out of house,, first!!
    I am heading over to the Dealer next week with my son,, to see what the have done to the Fatboy I just bought him,, so maybe they will know something by then.   I do know,,  the Owner of the Dealership,,  rides 1 of those   [smiley=pumpkin.gif] ORANGE  [smiley=pumpkin.gif] bikes,, and he told me this week he had like 2500 miles on it!!!  I gave him 1 of the CVO Patches I had,, and directed him to this site.  He said he has checked it out a few times!!
Ok,,  1 more time!!
    I went to my Dealer to pick up my sons Fatboy,, and they told me they took just 1 bag to a good Paint SHop.   The head man of the shop did the buffing on the bag,,  and it did NOTHING.  They buffed it down to the paint itself, and the said the paint was not  cured under all the clear coat.  They could scrape the paint off with a finger nail. What all this means,  I have no idea,, but I am sure someone on this site can give an explaination as to why they could do this.   They did buff the lid of the bag too,,, which wasnt cloudy,, and they said that clearcoat was hard. and it just  shined.  So tomorrow they are getting ahold of the MOCO to  order me all new tins where the paint is bad.  They wanted me to leave my bike there,, in case the MOCO Rep  wanted to see it.   It isnt like I am going riding up here in the SNOW BELT.
    And thats the rest of the Story...........
Eagle, it's unfortunate the "easy" fix didn't solve it.  But not unexpected.  Were it a problem in the clear it would literally look different than this problem does.  A couple of the photos posted so far have also been of good enough resolution and at the correct angles to make it look like we could see through the clear to the milky problem below.  So it was almost certainly going to be paint.  What was described to you would also account for some of the bikes looking different as a little time passed also.
Did they give you an ETA for delivery of the new painted parts?  Then just hope to Harley that the new parts don't have the same issue.
Hmmmm,
I hope the MoCo gets this info and finally makes a official statement on its 2006 CVO Paint issue.
Also I hope the MoCo is quicker in getting you new replacement tins than they were in getting me the left scratched saddlebag lid.
I bought the bike in early Sept/06 and just got the replacement lid on the 24th of December.
Actually, I think this is good news.  If the paint had been OK, I don't think buffing down the clear coat would yield good results.  I think it may end up uneven, splotchy and too thin.  Then you have to end up dealing with the painter rather than the MoCo.
  My Dealer has been #1 going thru this ordeal with me.  He (the owner) is the one who took the bag to the paint shop, and was there with the manager, when they did the buffing.  He is the one who explained what they did.  His daughter,, who is the one who sold me the bike,,  is the one who asked me to leave the bike,, to show the MOCO Rep what they had done.  she is the one who made the comment about not going anywhere riding right now,, and I told her I may be going to Daytona in March,, and she said the problem would be taken care of by then.  As I said,, she will be calling the MOCO today,, and is suppose to get back with me.
  I have heard some bad vibes  from some of the members here,,, about   getting the shaft from there Dealer's,, but mine is #1 in my book. I had never heard of this Dealer,,, let alone the town they are in before I was doing a search of Dealers in my area online, when I was looking to purchase an 06 Ultra,, and they have treated me like a customer they have known for years.   As I was adding Chrome  (( from advice from JeffJ ))  such as a NEW starter,, I asked the owner if he would take the original as a trade-in  to my upgrade.  He did take it,, and only charged me the $100 difference,, for the New Chrome Starter. Also,, when I added the new Chrome Front Caliper Kit,,,  he also took those in as a trade-in.  This Dealer is further away, then the Dealer I usually go to,, but from the Service I have received from them so far, and the Friendliness of the Staff,, I will continue to do business with them.
     I do hope everyone who has the BAD PAINT,,  gets there problems settled with the Dealers the purchased there bikes from.  At least the MOCO is saying they DO know they have a problem out there.  And thanks Twolane for the reply,, since I have know nothing about the painting process.
usa_eagle, please let us all know the name of the Dealership that has been such a good 'stand-up' dealership through your paint issues and has worked w/ you so well.  We all travel a lot and I love to spend my T-shirt $$$ with the dealers that have treated our members well.  It should ALL come home to roost......the good and the bad.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  spyder
Hey Spyder......
  As I had put in here before,  Jim  (the owner)  rides a SE [smiley=pumpkin.gif] himself!!  Here is the website to the dealership,, and it is a nice little story under ~ABOUT US~ that tells how he got started.
