Here are a series of pics showing the bike and the crimson metalflake.

It is AWESOME [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Don't get too close though or the flash turns the Black/Crimson into a  [smiley=cherry.gif]

This was my first attempt to show the metalflake in the outer fairing.

While difficult to show in the prictures, the entire bike looks great, I only hope it keeps this clearness and color.

The wait was worth it and I will pick it up when the snow is gone and the shop has my latest OCD stuff installed.  They are still waiting for the chrome thumb switch covers.

Roger...so glad to hear you are pleased with the parts...if you can feel the stripes you'll have no worries and things will remain as they look now.

How long was it from beginning to the current status?

How long was it from beginning to the current status?

Don, the HD boutique gal asked me that today and as near as I remember it was in late August when we made the initial claim.

After I came back in late September from my moose hunt I checked on the claim and it hadn't really gone anywhere at the factory, so with a bit of follow up and I think their talking with the single point of contact guy (I think that's who it is) they got it rolling.

The parts have trickled in since mid/late November with the balance of them arriving around the 15th of December.  I got the bike to the shop around the 20th I think, but they weren't expecting my OCD list which included the SS crossover and some other stuff they didn't stock.

Then they took Friday off and closed the 26th through the 28th for inventory.  I talked with the gal that manages the store and told her that was one of the busiest weeks I have all year in the car business.  I think they plan to be open next year and close the first week of the New Year.

Anyway, it took 3-4 months to make the claim and get the tins.  I had waited through the summer to get the claim going in order that I not lose riding days.  All in all I am happy with the result and was encouraged by many members here that were getting good tins by the time I started my claim.  I know a few have had problems, I may go for another front faring if a dry spot can't be resolved.  The service manager spotted it and has already said he's ready to order another one if it can't get fixed.

I told him I was fine with an attempt to fix it, I think I could fix it myself, but we'll let them do it....why not, it still has the 2 year warranty, just like Howie's.

So yours really was one of the "easy ones."  Apparently adequately repaired on its first attempt.  And in an even not too generous assessment Harley only took three months and change to make parts available to complete the repair.

Yours it seems really was one of the quickest and easiest solved of those with the 06 paint problems.  Having said that, and before too much credit is given to HDI here for getting you taken care of; how many three to four month long new vehicle service problems populate your dealership's service department?  And if you had one (or some) like that and it really ws the best handled of many in that cohort how would have been your dealings and relationship with the mftr?

Well, since we don't do custom paint we wouldn't have had a paint issue for this long once they mfr decided there was an issue.  That may have taken some time.  I recall when GM had the water based color issues, it took them awhile to make the call that they would offer a solution.  Jeep which I had also had the issue.

Today, we make the call on paint at the local level, each mfr has there own guidelines, but any car in the first year of ownership would have been handled immediately.  Complete repaints would have become an issue for owners on cars I imagine and don't even want to think about handling the numbers HD had on this.  Bolt on tins makes a big difference as it doesn't impact the value like a total repaint on a car would.

Mechanically however, there are cars that never get fixed and that's why we have lemon law.  This would be a better comparison to the milk dud cases IMHO, in that the dealer drives whether the issue is resolved as a "buy back" or the customer is forced to take it to the state for lemon law.

We do more buy backs by far than lemon law cases.  Why put the customer through it?  There are always situations that do not warrant a buy back and the customer feels they do, in those "very rare" situations the dealer and customer have to agree to disagree and proceed with lemon law.  I do not recall ever having one of those in the 21 years I have been the dealer.  Again, why put the customer through that.

I like to think that every dealer attempts to service customers equally, but I know that is not the case in the auto business or the real world.  I only wish there was an effective way for customers to be able to realize the value in the "dealership's product" as well as the mfr's product when they are negotiating a purchase.  We make every attempt to sell ourselves, but some people would rather save a few dollars that in the long run cost them a lot of stress and heartache.

Anyway, to sum up an answer, three or four month problems do rarely occur.  When they do, they are not always acknowledge quickly by the mfr.  If they occur in these numbers I would say it often would take three months for a solution to be engineered, another couple to launch it and another couple to get it to all of the customers.

That's the reason we have Federally mandated recalls, mfr's would rather have an internal "service action" than a mandated recall.  They work as quickly as possible to resolve issues but still we end up with recalls.

So the next time you see a mid-80's GM or Chrysler product (not sure if others had it) rolling down the road with the primer showing where the paint has peeled off, just think HD owners are out there riding their "milk duds" and they don't even know they could have a black bike with crimson hidden in it or a watermelon that looks like it should.

My experience and timeline is very close to Rjob.  The only addition of a bit of refusal drama in the middle that quickly passed.  All parts that (finally) arrived were perfect.  I have a brand new 2006 now with a much faster motor than it came with.

I know at first the MoCo ignored us.  After they realized the problem was sizable they had to find a solution.  I'm sure that took a little time and while they were working on that they had no choice but to stall.  If they sent replacements, they would only be more of the same, as many found out.

They did not do a good job of clearing out the old process stock, and some are still in the system.  The other thing is they really did not solve the problem until the model run was nearly complete.  So out of the 7500 bikes they made with bad paint, how many were replaced?

I bet it will be less than 100.  But I know 20 of them!!  To be absolutely honest, if it wasn't for this site I would have let it go. The perfect ones like we have will really be the rare ones.  Probably much less than 1000.  So we have real collector items, eh?   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
