I called my HD Service Manager (Helsinki, Finland) and he told me that they will remove the tire and look for markings "R1" or "R2" inside the rear wheel.
If one of the markings is found the rear wheel will be replaced with a new one.
He told that this fault is in approx 125 SERGs worldwide.

Well, I sure hope the possible replacing will start asap, my bike (international model) is on the list.  :-\

Jeez...I am on the list (05/09), but what I can't understand is if MoCo KNOWS how many bikes are affected, you would think they would know WHICH bikes are affected.

Thank you very very much for this information.  I like & have always had very good service from my dealer.  After seeing your post I called them to just make sure, they did confirm they knew about this recall but apparantly did not think calling me to reassure me that my bike was not effected was not required.  I disagree.

My dealership just found out about it too.  In fact, they are still waiting for full details.  He even said, "You probably know more about it than I do"!!  I didn't divulge my source.  :drink: :huepfenjump3: :nixweiss:

I smell big trouble a brewing for MOCO if a wheel fails at about 75 MPH while heading out to Sturgis.  ??? ???

I can happily report (and I would not have been able to 6 months ago) that Tommy from the Dallas H-D called ME before I could get to the website today and told me about the recall.  Am taking my bike there tomorrow for the inspection.  I hope MoCo has the fix ASAP b/c we are headed out to Sturgis on Saturday 7.25.  Now the real dilema - do I suffer with an alternate bike that I will force MoCo to give me if the fix isn't in, or check my wheel at every stop alng the way to make sure it is not cracking???  What to do, what to do...

Took my bike to the dealer this morning. Waited a couple of hours to find out that my wheel does not have to be replaced.

After two calls to H-D Customer Service (one yesterday and one today), here's what I have confirmed.

  • "Kits" (aka, replacement wheels) will be available for shipment the week of 7/20/2009.
  • If you're SERG is part of the recall, it doesn't mean your wheel needs to be replaced. It means your wheel needs to be inspected to determine if it requirements replacement.

CONCLUSION? Get your SERG to the dealer ASAP. If time is a concern (leaving for Sturgis in two weeks?), then find a way to get your bike inspected today or tomorrow. If you're one of the lucky ones (like me), you won't need your wheel replaced and you can go on your way. If not, the dealer can start the process of getting you a replacement wheel.

Again, my SERG was manufactured 05/09, received by the dealer 06/16/09 and my SERG is not on the recall list. This seems to create a bit of confusion for me due to my bike not being on the list and other 05/09 builds being on the list. Doesn't this indicate HD, at the latest was aware of the problem sometime in 05/09? Wouldn't HD have been better suited if they recalled builds from 10/08 to current with regard to liability, thus, eliminating the liability window?

From what I have learned, it is not bike build date, but wheel manufacture date.  My dealer told me they have to pull the wheel, take the tire off, and check numbers inside the rim of the wheel to see if it is a recall wheel.  Highjagger, my dealer told me if the dealer checks the dealer-only website for recalls, it will have details of what they need to check on your wheel - that's how he knew to call me.  If they tell you they can't, it is a dealer issue not a MoCo issue.  I hope that helps you some.
