Filter wrench. You need one that gets past the crank sensor.

Thanks...I have read some people that say that they can take them off by hand.  Was not sure and I have not bought one yet.  I was wondering about this.

Rather than a filter wrench, I use a strap wrench. Haven't tried it on the SERG yet but it works great on my Road King. Also, you mentioned getting oil everywhere when removing the filter. Don't know if you've heard this tip -- use a quart sized ziplock bag. Once the filter is loose enough to turn by hand, but before oil starts spilling out, slip the ziplock bag over the filter and filter mount then spin the filter off carefully. Let the whole mess sit there for while to catch drips. You can then carefully remove the ziplock bag with filter inside and avoid the mess. As a bonus, you can then throw the ziplock bag, filter and all, right out there in the hole you dug in the backyard with the rest of the toxic fluids that are so hard to dispose of.

Highly unlikely that anyone could screw a filter off by hand after it's been on the bike for any length of time, especially with the engine and filter still hot, and if there is such a person out there I don't think I want to shake his hand. :nervous:

If you buy a filter wrench, make sure it will clear the crankshaft sensor that sticks out of the engine cases just to the left of the oil filter.  H-D sells one for Twin Cam engines that has a cutout to clear the sensor.  I personally eliminated that little issue by using K&N filters that have a nut welded on the end so you can use a regular socket to unscrew the filter.  Works great.

I agree with GRC, that dude that takes hot, stuck oil filter off by hand is not someone I want to mess with. Strap wrench works ok, Harley cut-out deal works ok and they show a clamp type in the owners manual for the SERG that might be the trick, haven't seen one in person but might be worth checking out.

Well you can both shake my hand.  :-\ just wanted to see if I could hell no couldn't get it.  Guys is there anything wrong with running the mobile 1 20w50 in all of the holes?  I may get amsoil but wanted to use the same fluid and figured the mobile 1 would be better than running syn3 in all? Thanks.

Do yourself a favor and order the Redline. You will be glad you did.  Since you are in Maryland call Zippers they have it all in stock. www.zippersperformance.com

There's nothing wrong with running the Mobil 1 in all three holes, it's a higher rated product than the SYN3 so it's at least a little better than what you have now.  However, you will eventually find that a real gear oil in the transmission will protect the parts better, shift smoother, and possibly run quieter.

I just wish I could walk in to a store close by and buy it.  I think I am going to order RED LINE for the tranny and primary...and use the mobile 1 for the engine.  Thanks guys  :2vrolijk_21:

When I change the trans fluid and primary do I need new gaskets?  I have the O rings...I know I know...I am going to buy a Service Manual...

Thanks again.  RED LINE IT WILL BE...so I need 3 to 3.5 mobile 1 v twin, 1 qt REDLINE SHOCKPROOF, 1 qt REDLINE Primary oil...got the Harley filter and O rings...and a OIL WRENCH!   :-X

Thanks...not sure when I am going to do it but probably will be soon.

You will not regret the Red Line decision. As mentioned previously, I run the 20 50 oil, MTL in the primary (but it takes a little more than a qt ~ as per the bible) and the Heavy Shock (1qt) in the trans. Biggest difference: tranny smoothed out and quieted down immediately. Love it, love it, love it . . .

The guy at zippers told me that all I need was a qt.  I looked in my Owners Manual about the trans and it holds 24oz, the engine is 3.5 qts, and he said that it was 1 qt in the primary?  What exactly does the "bible" say regarding the primary?  I am at work and currious...if I need to add more fluid in the primary can I just add a little of the 20 50 oil with the MTL?   ???

Thanks...

I'm gonna jump in here, I too would use the Red Line Products but save yourself some time and go down to NAPA and just buy the strap wrench, you can use it on your other vehicles too and it works fine, I also like the zip lock bag for the filter.  Have fun with it.....
