Tire balance is a possibility. If a weight was thrown you'd experience the shimmy like effect when coasting down, hands off bars. Took me a while to find this source on the wifes FatBoy... not a RK I know, but i've seen this has the source on several bikes.. easy check, look for the missing weight.

I don't think it has anything to do with the tires or CVO, as my stock '09 RG does the same thing right at 40mph.  Glad to see this thread!!!

My self diagnosis was loose steering head bolt.  But that's a REAL lame steering adjustment.  There should be something a little more high tech, like a damper.  Does anyone make a steering damper for touring?

First, regardless of what brand and size tires you have this has been a fairly widely reported problem on the SERG's, and most have found that the steering head bearing adjustment, when done correctly, took care of the problem.  I would suggest that would be a good place to start the diagnosis procedure.  If the problem persists after the head bearings are properly adjusted and the nut properly torqued (see the bulletin posted above by rascal1007), then further diagnosis will be needed.

As for the tires, what is the information molded into the sidewalls?  For instance, the stock Dunlops would have 130/70 B 18  63H on the front, the rear would be 180/55 B 18 80H.  There is a Metzler ME880 that matches up in the front, 130/70 B 18 63H, but there is no direct match for the rear in the catalog.  The closest ones are radials, not bias ply, and they have a significantly lower load rating than the stock Dunlop.  The closest bias ply listed is a 150/70 B 18.  Let us know what you have.

Too bad you're 10+ hours away.
per bike i guess ,
Larry is 10 hours away from me too , per airplane ,
but nevertheless he helped me with the lowers and the audio and and and .  :2vrolijk_21:

The swimming or wobbling at high speed could be caused by a tall windshield , The Windvest 12" for example is worse than the Clearview standard allthough the Clearview is longer , the angle is leaner and the keeping control of the frontend at highspeed is easier .
The torque of the stearing head was changed by hd during this year , the dealer has to tighten this

Agreed...  however I don't think the tech at the 1st shop did this alignment properly.  I went out to the garage and put the bike up on my lift and did the swing test myself looking for (2) swings back and forth.  It was clear to me that I am far short of that measurement. From the left I got barely got one swing...   and doing this test from the left vs the right yields two different results by a huge margin. It would appear to me that the neck adjustment is too tight something is impeading the travel; tightnes, bearings or grease....  I'll leave the real test up to the mechanic tomorrow to check.

GRC, my signature below lists the tires and the size numbers I think you're looking for.  Highjagger, the windshield is a Clearview Sport. So it's not that tall at all.  Can't imagine that being an issue at this point.  Although I'll keep that in mind if I decide to go with a taller shield.

I'll report back after the service.  I'm hopeful that they'll find the cause quickly.

I've not seen a bike that doesn't do it at 40-42 mph. Honda, Harley, BMW, Triumph, etc, etc. It's harmonics .

I've never had a bike do this.  I ride the same as I have since age 15.

No disrespect but I would like to think I ride a lot better now than when I was 15.
But I can tell you one thing for sure, falling down hurts a lot more than it did then.

That's not what I meant.  Of course I'm a more experienced rider.  Point being, in 39 years of riding I've never ever had a bike wobble at 40mph.  In the general sense, I'm not doing anything different now than before.  Same goes with the 2 other Harley touring bikes.  No 40mph wobble until this one.
