oil with no significant synthetic component does not exist  - well except the stuff for one buc per quart non detergent...

if you want to use pure dino oil you need to be running something like a flathead - you cant run pure non detergent, pure dino oil in anything newer.

synthetic oil is made from dino oil - its cracked and then combined to a really pure form with no waxes in it

rotella has all the additives that all the other high pressure diesel oils have

its also rated specifically for turbo charged engines [cumins, etc] and supercharged engines [detroit etc]

its not dino oil - has not been dino oil since the 70's

&
ver on the VOA forum there was a debate about the zinc and phosphorus levels of the Rotella T 15W-40. I thought I'd e-mail Shell and ask what they claimed. Here's what they said:

"Shell Rotella T Multigrade Oil SAE 15W-40 with Triple Protection Technology, our API CJ-4/SM specification product, typically contains about 1200 ppm zinc and 1100 ppm phosphorous as manufactured."

How much variability there is in the manufacturing process I don't know. I've seen VOAs that more or less confirm that, and other VOAs show lower numbers. I suppose one could assume Shell is saying something they know not to be true, but I find it hard to believe they'd do that."

so in short - there are NO oils that are dino oils - they are ALL mfg oils and ALL contain synthetic components - you can pine for dino oil all you want but that wont make it true.

pure synthetics cant take more heat and take more cold - but they all lubricate and clean the same way - just change non pure synthetics more often and all is well. the oil change intervals for "normal" oil keep getting longer for a reason.

the nut of the issue is that 25 years ago there were companies making basically dino oils - but those days are gone - the line between pure synthetic oils and partial synthetic oils is getting smaller all the time.

I am just going to enjoy my Esters,Diesters,Polyalphaolefin. Cheers  :drink:

Group III base stocks (Hydrocracked/Hydroisomerized = API Group III base oils)[with certain amount of mixture of PAOs and esters and Group V] are considered synthetic motor oil ONLY in the United States. (advertising law suite) Group III based lubricants are not allowed to be marketed as "synthetic" in any market outside of the USA.

Now if you are into true biobased / biodegradable oil check these guys out. http://www.renewablelube.com/
They make some real GOOD but $$$ oil. http://www.renewablelube.com/pdf/Bio-Synthetic%20HD%20SHP%20SAE%2020W50%20Motor%20Oil.pdf

Check out this link. A very informative motorcycle oil study from Amsoil. Lots of information about the various properties of motor oil.

Bel Ray V-Twin is listed in the SAE 50 group. Ranked 13th out of 17 overall, Lucas was 16th out of 17!! HD SYN3 ranked 4th, so I don't think the dealer was doing you much of a favor with that recomendation.

I am currently using AmsOil in my bike and was also using it in my MB E320 but then recently switched the MB to Castol Synthetic as it is easier and cheeper to get than Amsoil and I have been using Castol petroleum in my other vehicles for years with no problems. I have 250K on my Chevy truck, 160 K on my Dodge Truck and 180K on my Chevy Impala and non of them burn oil. I also use Pure 1 oil filters.

The MB actual had more engine noise (lifters) when using the AmsOil then the Castrol.

I will switch the bike over to either Castrol or Mobile 1 when I run out of my Amsoil stock.

:DYeah ! No Chit! :huepfenjump3: did'n find the oil post's on here till AFTER the change, really steer'd me from Syn3/thought that was kinda odd! Lucas /Bel-ray are the aftermarket's they keep there.....did use the stabilizer though......hmmmmm.....maybe they're push'n for the mods I talked about last season,I hear'm now..."well, while we're in here repair'n the damage, now'd be the time to" :nixweiss:.....It'll get a thorough transfusion before it hits the road this spring....Redline evrwhere, just from what I've read here :2vrolijk_21:
