It's all about Mustang seats
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:49:11 PM »

After my 1,767.3 trip that included the Doc tune and Traxxion Ak-20's, it has become abundantly clear that I really hate the stock 2010 CVO seat.

My wife does not like those stubby arm rests that are terribly impractical either. I don't like how high I sit in the saddle. Another issue for me is the sheer low quality of the Harley seat construction. The base is cheap plastic. My backrest is actually crooked. That's right crooked. It's offset to the right and believe me, that drove me nuts on my trip. Ya, I know, it's a warranty issue and I will have it replaced. But the point is, Harley makes cheap seats in my opinion.

I've owned Corbin and liked it but never quite got fully comfortable with their firm foam philosophy and construction. After talking with CVORick about his first hand experience as well as my own research, I ordered the brand new one-piece Super Touring model. Alex at Mustang informed me this seat is only a month or two old and has their latest and greatest technology and design. You can follow this link to their site. At the bottom put in page 86 then click "goto page".
http://www.mustangseats.com/virtual_catalogs/2010/2010_harley_catalog/2010_harley_catalog.html

I purchased the seat, backrest, passenger wrap around and mounting hardware. I like the the full length arm rest for the passenger. The high back bucket for the rider as well as the lower sitting position.

As for it's actual performance and how it suits my particular body shape...

Stay "tuned".

You may want to try a Saddlemen Road Sofa Seat.  You can  try it out for a short time and send it back if you don't like it.

I recently purchased the Mustang Super Touring one piece for my 09 SERG. Really like the styling of the seat and did I mention comfortable ?    ;)
This my first Mustang seat and if there is something better, someone will have to show me. :worthless:

I could not see that this is a heated seat - Is it?

Any pics yet?

Mustang seats are not heated. This was an unfortunate concession I chose to make. However, it's my hands, feet and chin area that get the coldest. I'd like to keep the heated seat feature but comfort rules the day. Additionally, one can always have heat installed in any seat including Mustang if desired. Sargent Cycle (spelled sargent not sergeant) would be one place to consider for this service.

Jesse, did the Brown Truck show up??  Going to be at the Mustang Show Tent/Trailer in Barefoot Landings, South Carolina on Friday or Saturday.  Do I want to get the new Mustang Touring seat or not?  Mind is already set on buying based on 2 previous Mustang purchases.  Just want to hear your opinion.

It sure did Rick. Arrived about 2 hours ago and I just got home. Beginning the install right now. I'll post an update and brief opinion in a few hours. Hang tight.

Me too!   I will likewise be making it to Barefoot landing and did not know the Mustang vendor might be there.  My wife has been after me to ditch the stock (heated seat) deal on my SE Ultra.   My prior experience has been with Corbin.  A "hard" seat but comfortable and (genuine leather).   I understand the Mustang seat is (not) leather,  but if it sits a (little) lower and is cushy/comfortable,  I might be interested.   Let us know what ya think. :2vrolijk_21:

There are (2) companies that add HEAT to Mustang seats. One in Michigan,
and if you ask Mustang they will tell you the other. I have the one in MI
on my computer at work.

I am not impressed with Mustang.

The wrap around is a pain to install. When installed it adds pressure to the trunk lid in such a way that it doesn't shut quite as tightly. Yes, you push down a smidgen and it will shut just fine but that pressure should not be there. The studs used to mount the wrap around to the trunk are adjustable to fit several years of bikes. This was a mistake in my opinion. There is no way to adjust them once you get them mounted and you have to mount them to find the perfect adjustment. I do not like there mounting design for the wrap around. Even when I finally found the best position of the studs, they stressed the trunk as noted above. It is not a perfect fit. Additionally, the top back of the wrap around presses against the chrome luggage rack. I do not like that either. There should be a space between the luggage rack and the back of the wrap around like there is on the stock.

The seat itself feels nice enough. However, I was not blown away by its comfort from the first sit. I did not feel like I was sitting down in my bike like I thought I would be. The seat did not make me feel at one with the bike. I felt like I was sitting on a seat that was mounted to the bike... if you know what I mean. But as we all know, to be fair, it takes several hundred miles to make a fair judgement call on comfort.

I don't like the way it moves me back. While I like the space it gives me by moving me further from the gas tank, I now have to reach further for the handle bars causing stress on the upper back. A handle bar change would be necessary sooner or later I believe.

The back rest post has notches in it and clicks as you push it down in to its hidden slot. However, the mechanism that is designed to hold the back rest in place is so loose that as I rode down the road the backrest continued to just vibrate down in to it's lowest position immediately every time after I reached back and pulled it up.

There is a very tiny slit in the wrap around that could lead to trouble later. No doubt Mustang would replace this and imperfections can happen to any manufacturer so this is not a complaint just an observation.

I will be returning the Mustang seat and trying something else.

Don't need the heated seat with the heated vest.  I live in Florida!!  Heated vest is for trip to Canada and Alaska.  Vibrator in seat?  Doubt it!!  I vibrate without additional accessories.  Also doubt that I would destroy an $700-$800 seat for a fricking vibrator installation.  Don't need to explain that one.

Thanks Jesse.  I really appreciate the input.  Will pay close attention to the details of fit and finish before any purchase.  Did you do the one piece with the rider backrest or two piece?
