103 cu.in.
« on: July 02, 2010, 10:40:11 AM »

It seems (still a rumour?) that in 2011 MOCO will produce some Touring models( FLHR, FLHRC, etc.) with a 103 Twin Cam.

What is known about reliability and performance of this engine?
Is the performance close to the 110 or is there still a big difference?
Is the 103 a big step forward in comparison to the 96?
Is it recommended to buy anyway the 103 engine, because it is based or similar to the Police engines?

All of the 2011 touring bikes will have a 103 engine option. Perhaps all touring bike models will have a "Limited" with additional features beyond just the 103.

103" is a sweet engine, and have not heard much at all in the way of issues like the 110" Runs warmer than the 96" but nothing like a 110" as I hear the story from 110" drivers.  :2vrolijk_21:

The 103 stage 1 or 2 is very reliable, but they not as powerful as a stock 110 or a 110 stage 1.  A cam, high flow air cleaner, and better exhaust does unleash the 103's torque, but even a stock 110 will still leave the 103 rider with a view of the 110's taillights. And comparing a stock 96 to a 103 stage 2 is like comparing an stock 80" Evo to a stock TC 96".

Having now owned two CVO 110's, they have proven to be very reliable, and quite powerful (for a Harley).

The 110's in Canada must be better than the 110's in the United States cause my junky old stock 103 on my ultra has jerked a knot in the azz of every 110 I have ridden with here that has wanted to give me a go.  :P :P :P :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The 103 under discussion in this thread is not the same as the old CVO103 used in the '06 and earlier bikes.  Only thing that's the same is the cubic inch displacement.

The current 103's are just a big bore kit on a regular TC96 engine.  In other words, bigger pistons in bigger bores, but the same heads, cams, bottom end, etc. as the 96.  I think they did add compression releases to the heads, but they are still regular TC96 heads and not performance versions.  So the best you could expect in terms of performance is probably about 5-10% increase in torque due to the increased displacement and slightly higher compression ratio.  No where near the performance level of the CVO110.

I expect this will not be a stand alone option, but will be part of a package like the Limited.  If you want the other stuff in the package, go ahead and buy it.  If not, you can do the big bore yourself at any time.  If you have the dealer do it prior to delivery, I believe it will be covered under the two year factory warranty just like in the past.

Absolutely ... a stock 110 will unquestionably leave a stock 103 looking at the 110's tailights. Now if you're you're talking upgraded engines, putting the same $s into a 110 will also get you far more power than those same $s spent on a 103 (assuming equally qualified techs doing the tuning). Of course if you upgrade a 103 and decide to dance with a stock 110, you'd better hope the 103 dusts the 110 or someone wasted alot of $.

Ok, Ok guess I cannot play I have changed the pipes on my 2006 103" and leave the 110's in the mirror so mine is not technically stock.

It looks like the MY2011 will offer 96 and 103 versions of the same bike on certain models.
It's interesting to note our local dealer (and others) are offering the following:

Buy a '10 touring & get a...
103' Kit installed! offer expires 7/15/10. Offer valid on in-stock models only.

Kinda tells you that they REALLY want to unload the '10's before the new models hit the floor!
The new 103's (I have one) is not a great improvement over the 96"s IMO, just a little bigger bore.
It DOES have potential though.

I agree with grc, the old 103 motors were for the most part very happy motors and made torque and hp very well. The new 103's don't seem to be the same.

Looks like we have another bunch of folks who love to compare apples to rutabaga's.  I happen to know of several 600cc. motorcycles that will blow all of the previously mentioned Harley's in the weeds.  So what?

There is a lot more to comparisons than just cubic inches.  The cam timing of the CVO103 is totally different than the CVO110, the gear ratio's are also totally different, and the current CUSE weights at least 100 pounds more than the older models with the 103.

Dig out a bone stock '05 SEEG and put it on the dragstrip next to a bone stock '10 CUSE5.  Make some passes, then switch riders to even out any rider influence and do it again.  Then you might have a valid real world comparison.  Otherwise, all you've got is smoke.  Once you start making any mods, you've introduced variables that make any results suspect.

Only smoke I have here is when the back tire lights up.

As far as running them and switching drivers do not have problem meeting and running just not so sure about the switching part 110 rider might not be able to handle the 2006 103.

 ;) ;) ;) ;) ::) ::) ::) :P :P :P
