new v&h monster rounds
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:31:21 AM »

just instaled the new monster rounds on my `03 flhrc, the v&h ovals(reg., not monsters) got to loud for me.(yeah, i`m old).  these are quieter than the monster ovals. almost too quiet. love the mo`s on my `08 se ultra, but thought they would look too big on the rk.

According to Vance and Hines tech, they should be the same volume as the Monster Ovals, 94 db.  I am thinking they might open up after some use.

I just put a set of Hi Outputs on my SE Ultra and they sounded very muffled at first but have changed (for the better)  with 1200 miles or so I have put on them.

I installed the monster rounds an love them...yes they are real quiet when first installed, but after some miles they have developed a nice low tone similar to the monster ovals. I also like the little back pressure they have, really helps the bottom end torque.

Do you know what the db level for the Hi Outputs are? Im thinking about putting them on my SERK, But if they are the same as the MO's (94) i'm not wasting my money, Thats not loud enough.

The Hi Outputs are 104 db, the Basic Slip ons are 101.   For every 3 db perceived volume is twice as loud.  Although the Hi outputs are rated much higher than the Monsters, they still do not seem offensively loud.  I think it is because they sound so deep and the low frequency volume is not as offensive to the ear as higher midrange frequencies are.  They really have a low frequency purr when cruising, and growl when you jump on it.  They sound real good and others have commented that they like the sound, but  I personally would like just a touch more higher frequency crack.  Maybe it will happen on its own with a few more miles or maybe I will play around with them a bit...

I had basics before these with no tune.  Put hi outputs on at time of tune. .Basics had a bit more crack on top bit did not sound as massive as the Hi Outputs.  Another reason I got the High outputs is that they have a quiet baffle available which I bought at the same time but did not try yet. THey were only 24 bucks apiece.   You never know when it might be nice to have a real nice quieter bike for a long trip or something.  I haven't popped em in to try yet. Supposed to reduce the volume by 5 or 6 db.   It'll probably affect the tune but maybe not too bad.  It will give me a chance to try the V tune with my TTS when I get some time.

Also, the tech told me power increase numbers with the various mufflers...  Basics 3hp, high outputs 5-6 hp and the Monsters  rounds and ovals 7-8.

DennisG, One more question, Is the 104 db at idle? I'm running the V&H Big Shot Duals with Thunder Monster Baffle, They idle at 107 db, But they don't have the deep tone i'm looking for, Sounds like the Hi Output slip on's just might be what i'm looking for.  :2vrolijk_21:

I am not sure if it is at idle, but it probably is, and from a specific distance and angle.  Whenever you measure sound pressure level for comparison purposes you have to have a specific consistent measurement point.  It would have to be the same as the point at which your pipe was measured for the comparison to be meaningful.  If you call them on the phone, they will probably know or can find out their standard point of measurement and weighting they use on the meter.

Here is a video of the Hi Outputs on my Ultra.  I will do another later with more revving. I didnt want to freak my neighbor out! :-)

This is like my first you tube, done with a flip video camera.    It was up against my open garage door so it may be overly boomy, but it should give you an idea if you have a sub woofer on your computer spkrs.

No not the same.  Monster Oval, Monster Rounds 94 db.  Rounds same diameter tube all the way.   Hi Outputs 104db tube goes from smaller diameter to 4.5 inches at the rear of muffler
