You guys got busy. I called HD about the iPod interface. Was advised it will not stream. You're right to point out that no hand controlls with the iPod in the bag will be a problem. Right now I'm running it from a cable in my pocket. My bad.   Not a good look.  Riders Claw ipone 4 out in couple weeks but then I've got cables for power and audio and an exposed iPhone.

Am I reading the above that I've got to change radios or send it to Iron Cross to get functionality?

I used to think my old Mercedes was expensive. With the purchase of my Spiced Rum I'm learning new limits to the meaning of mods. I'm driving a motorcycle that costs more than a lot of cars and adding $500 upgrades like nobody's business. Help me. It's either an obsession or an addiction. Might be both.

Their website is specific in its mention of doing "Harman Kardon service."  While everything I remember being said about the Iron Cross boys is good I don't remember a word about them touching the old Radio Sound radios.  Even their required work order form (link below) has across it's top the following:

""Fill out the form below (please print) and include with your Harman Kardon radio"

There are a few ways to get sound out of the IPOD or IPHONE to your radio

1. Use the headphone out jack to your Aux port--phone won't charge and no hand controls, must control on device
2. Send radio to Iron Cross for IPOD/IPHONE cable modification--cable will reach the saddlebags and charge the phone, but no hand controls and must control from device which is now in the saddlebag
3. Install HD BOOM IPOD Module--IPOD/IPHONE goes in saddlebag, hand controls work device, songs show up in display and device charges while connected.
4. Replace the radio with aftermarket marine unit and use Hawg Wired hand control module--Full control and charging of device as above and the cable should be long enough to get it into the saddlebag. Songs will show up on radio display. Radio will most likely have more power and more inputs that the HD radio, however it is more work and more money. ALSO--Double check with aftermarket radio manufacturer as to whether or not it will stream from the web. It might just be ITunes just like the HD unit. I never asked about using it to stream.

Order all the parts and send them here.  I'll put 'em in for you and then we'll go for a ride!!

Stupid question....I have had my radio out and know how it mounts...is there a kit to mount an aftermarket radio the way the factory mounts the stock one?? Or are you securing a DIN sleeve to the brackets and then sliding the radio in?

Check the link for an illustration.  Biketronics and HawgWired both offer kits that are all-inclusive to put a single DIN sized head unit in our bikes.  Both a mount adapter for the fairing bracket mount and a sealing plate (o-ring seals) to mate the face of the radio to the hole in in the inner fairing.  Those parts and the harness adapter that makes the handlebar controls work make the install plug and play.

As usual--you have the answer...thanks.....That takes care of that end. But doesn't the factory unit have 2 large plugs coming out of it?? I see the Hawg Wired adapter handles the speakers and power, but then what is in the other plug???

The old Radio Sound radio (pre-06) have only the one plug.  Except for the 04 and 05 SEEGs.  On the SEEGs the second plug is an overlay to power and run outputs from an amp built in to what is otherwise an accessory radio.  Not used if you're changing to an aftermarket head unit.

On the HK radios (06 and up) the single big plug for primary audio is the same.  There is a second big plug but it's for the overlay harness that allows/manages connection to the accessory pieces.  Things like CB module, XM module, etc.

Those accessory modules are specific to the HK radio.  Wouldn't work with the aftermarket head unit anyway.  So once again that second plug would no longer be used.  In fact entire accessory overlay harness (if the bike even has it) could be removed to get it out of the way.

I have the second plug...I'm guessing becuase they are using the same harness for the SESG as the SEUC..that and they want me to buy as many modules as the MoCo can sell me :)

Thanks for all the info..Instead of dealing with the new IPOD interface, I may just go aftermarket and forget the IPOD totally and just use a 16GB or 32GB USB flash drive and toss it in one of the bags. The SONY marine unit has a USB interface on a 5ft wire--just need to extend it a bit to reach the bags. No moving parts and I don't have to worry about shutting the USB drive off.

The only pain is having to take the removable radio faceplate off when parking the bike:(

That's what I've got on the 05; a Sony marine grade unit with an iPod controller.  Everything works exactly as you'd expect it.  There is no learning curve to the controls.  Two things to mention; one positive and one negative.

One positive is a gain in the handlebar controls.  Push the buttons under both thumbs at the same time and it turns the radio on.  No longer have to reach the radio to turn it on.  Same thing won't turn it off.  But it will turn it on.

One negative is with the HawgWired unit you lose the AVC.  The automatic volume control isn't a big deal.  But when you come in to town looking for fuel after being on the highway for two hours you'll have to turn the radio down.

Biketronics makes a competitive product.  It does do AVC.  But overall it and it's "kit" are weaker products.  Occasional phantom control functions and other quirks.  The HawgWired stuff is really top notch for fit and functions very well.  To my mind it was worth losing the AVC.  Add to that the people at HawgWired are excellent to work with and HD-Dude handles their gear.

I noticed that the Biketronics had the AVC and the Hawg Wired didn't...and I also noticed that the kit did not look as....hmm.....I guess "professional" as the Hawg Wired. They also did not have the rubber seal that goes around the radio..it looks more like a plain faceplate to take up the space.  I have already bought HawgWired stuff from Jim so that is a no brainer...

Wonder if I should upgrade to 6.5" speakers while I am in there..the Hawg Wired's are nice, but maybe a little more bass...hmmm..already have the amp :huepfenlol2:

Damn...another thing on the winter upgrade list.....time to tell the wife what I want for Christmas

Oh boy! The Boom! iPod module won't allow you to stream Pandora, Slacker radio, etc?  That's a huge deficiency if that's accurate. Also, I use my iphone for navigation with the Magellan app. I wonder if I wont be able to hear the audio turn by turn. I'm already having buyer's remorse and I haven't even installed it yet.

The docs don't hedge on that iPod functions are what's controlled.  Not the rest of the iPhone.  Going from the headphone jack on the iPhone to the aux in jack on the radio would play the other functions.  But that negates the new module.
