I know the numbers from 2 of our dealers, each sells around 10 CVOs/year.

From the 07 and 08 they service not a single one was without mayor engine trouble within the first 15.000 m, 4 engines got replaced alltogether.

Of the 09 until now only one had a serious issue (lifters) but as last winter was hard and long over here and this season saw much rain the bikes are still low on mileage, most under 20.000 m.

I will have high flow oil pump and Torrington cam bearings installed in january so the bike will be teared down anyway and all critical parts checked against specs.

My warranty expires in june ...

Update the engine was torn down to reveal bad cases from shifting crank
as a lot of these 110's have done! Talked with another Mechanic from a larger dealer who is in contact with other dealer's mechanics and the common problem seems to be lifters, crank run out! Waiting for a response from warranty company
to inspect engine! Still thinking of doing the 120 engine to replace the 110! Cranks
are from a  different company! I would have to up grade a few parts but it seems right now the way to go! Another 110 engine going down won't be pretty!!!!!

If you can, DO IT.
Otherwise, you'll always be looking back thinking "what if"!!
From reports so far, this 120R is a good motor.

I have one of the 2010's that the motor has been replaced at 1000 miles. I'm still having issues with the second motor. Loud Clacking and Pinging!! Had Second motor replaced and got 4500 miles and it failed. On my third motor now and MOCO very upset with me using Amsoil in motor. Will only warranty me if I use Syn 3 only for factory warranty. I have 5200 miles on third motor and so far it holding together but we are going into are summer here in Arizona and you know how 115 degree temps effect the 110?????

I was going to say this in the past. Of all the CVO owners, which I think only
a fraction know of this website, the "mortality" rate of the 110 cu/in may be
WAY higher then we are aware of. I also wonder what the rate of failure is on
the standard 96 cu/in is? I asked quite a few CVO owners if they knew of the
problems with the 110's and they only knew of there own. They just thought
they got a lemon. I mentioned our site, and told them to tune in.
I told quite a few members of my HOG chapter of the tire problems they
might run into with their new 09's, and they laughed at me. When they started
having cupping problems, they wanted to know how I knew.

Just my 2 cents!

My 2011 110 had the rocker arm support break at 1,700 miles.  Now have over 5K and no additional problems.

My 2008 SE Ultra 110 had the cylinder leak and heads replaced (recall) at 16K miles, and flywheel issues at 35K miles.  They just rebuilt the motor from scratch.

My friends o8 FLHTCUSE3 let go at 75 MPH going into a strong headwind. I was behind him to the right riding staggered when smoke started pouring off his rear tire. He started whipping left and right and i just got around him. He somehow regained control and came to a stop. Luckily no cars were behind us. He said with all the wind noise he didn't notice any noises, then the engine locked up and before he could get the clutch in he lost control. It was later determined the flywheels shifted took out the oil pump and that was it! Yikes! He got a new engine on that one.

Just wanted to add something to this thread. I just turned over 26K on my FLHRSE3 and started noticing some oil consumption, about 3/4 of a quart low over a period of 5K. Not blowing smoke or leaking...where is this oil going?

It is being consumed (burned).  Could be carryover in the breather system going back to the intake, could be valve guide seals seeping, could be a little getting by the rings.  But less than one quart in 5000 miles is nothing on a Harley, so why worry about it?

ok, bike in the shop, for excessive oil consumption over a quart in 1000miles. what was found, valve guides = shot, cylinders= egg shaped, crank runout= .004, mileage = 5500.
