Failed 110's
« on: September 29, 2010, 08:11:47 AM »

I have a 2008 SE ULTRA 110! I have a question for the group! How many of these engines of any year have failed and needed replacements?

Ummmm...  I don't think anyone counted...  but in general...

07's:  A LOT
08's:  Fewer than in 07
09's:  A few - but not to many...
10's:  Almost none, but a few...

I would tend to agree with Scotts response.   :2vrolijk_21:    :2vrolijk_21:

I'd add to that, "How may SOUND like they are going to fail at any time?"  A lot from any year, with more the farther back you go.

Only MOCO knows that answer.......

Not sure what importance or relevance to a warranty claim , but the answer is A lot.

my 2008 only made it to 8000 miles.

Do I Believe that there was 100% failure....NO
without any clear data it is just a  guess.
In a 2008 in Ultra's (other bikes did not fail as much, I guess because of heat and weight)
my guess would be 20%, far more did not fail than did....personally in my little world (not including CVO world)
The MOCO had the recall due to the expected failure rates were way to high. what number was that? 30-70% ?

The bottom line is that the warranty company should cover this unless they could prove you ran this without oil.

Note: most had their engines rebuilt and not exchanged, some by choice, some not!

8000 miles???? Thanks for the reply! I am sure only the Motor Company knows the true answer but was just wondering how
many on this site have had the issue or know of someone who has!
Oil not a issue as I take very good care of my bikes! I have four
other bikes with less problems from the others all put together!

I am wondering what you would consider "failed"?
I have an 08 Springer that I considered suspect at 7,000 miles due to oil consumption. See my thread "DISGUSTED". below.
The MoCo replaced this motor at 30,000 miles. It drank oil like nothing I have ever seen. By the time they finally gave in and changed it I suspect the flywheels had shifted and/or the crank had issues. They sent it to the factory and will not tell anyone what the problem was. However, if I could keep oil in it it still performed very well as far as full on power was concerned. I tried and failed at several attempts to make it completely scatter! One instance, 12+ miles at 5400 rpm in second gear!
Since the MoCo gave me a new motor, I guess you could consider the old one a "failure".

ShortDog thank you for your reply! Well failed in this situation is one of Tappets  from what I'm told failed sending sheds of metal thru the oil pump!
It sound like an old chevy with bad lifters but louder! Like you it has 30,000
miles it! I had just got it back the day before from a tripped tentioner bolt
and new primary! Rode to work and back home 150 mlles round trip, trailered
it from the dealer the day before! I did the ride to work the next morning and
Bingo on the way home! :drink:

That is a problem that's been experienced by several folks, and not just on 110's (same lifters are used in all the Twin Cams).  Often when it occurs the cases get screwed up, but even if they don't the entire engine needs to come apart and everything needs to be thoroughly checked.  Tiny bits of metal get strewn thoughout the engine and will play haites with bearings and other critical components.  When it happens with a brand new engine that's still in warranty, H-D may choose to just replace the engine rather than do the full overhaul.  I don't know if that is still an option once the factory warranty is gone and you're dealing with the ESP.

There should be no doubt that the ESP would cover the failure, so what is the deal with waiting for a response from the ESP folks and the dealer?  I imagine the dealer needs prior approval for major repairs, but that shouldn't take more than a phone call or two.  You're still running the stock lifters and cams, right??

18 days out on my Sturgis trip the 110 in my CVO UC had a catastrophic tappet failure on the front cylinder intake. I had 29,000 miles on the bike when it failed. I left the bike at Destination HD in Tacoma, WA. Harley replaced the motor, oil cooler and pan and 11 days later I was back on the road. I couldn't have asked for better service from either the dealer or MOCO. The only sign of impending failure was a "picking" noise under load for about 800 miles prior to the failure. I attributed the noise to bad gas detonation and started using octane booster. With this experience I recognized that the 103 in my 2010 Limited in New Zealand was exhibiting the same "picking" noise. Harley replaced the tappets in my 2010 under warranty.

I Have a SERK with the 110-from day 1 I heard a ticking noise-that could not be found by Harley dearler.  I had all the recall work done.
I had about 18000 miles on the motor and it started knocking-took it directly to Harley dealer and they told me the crank had shifted and the motor was no goo.
Harley ended up replacing the motor with a late 110 and no charge to me.
