I blew out the LCD dipstick unit twice in the first few weeks with the 116 and the Baker six-speed. I never actually lost the unit, it just came out about half way. I then finally figured out the locking cam action on the digital dipstick. (once installed turn it a few degrees clockwise to lock it in.

Mine popped out once (dealer said I may not have had it seated probably).  Oil all over the pipes but fortunately I did not loose much.  Shortly after, I hit heavy up hill traffic (parade conditions) and the motor started to go into the "HOT mode".  Pulled to the side to consider what my next move was.  Being able to see the oil temp (over 300 degrees) made it real easy!  Fortunately, the side lane was paved and I hit the road again to cool the motor down.  Only problem was a few cagers that did not like my "cheating ways" and they teased me by moving over to the right!  Keeping both hands on the bars prevented any "single finger" action  :sauer021: to avoid any road rage  :rifle: (AZ allows you to carry a gun), so I made it safely up to higher elevations and cooler temps.  Never happened again and I always give it a small turn and a tug (as noted above).   Now I need to go check to see if I have oil in my diplay! ;D

I've had mine for 2 yrs now, temp seems to be working okay although I'm always getting the "error" msg and very, very rarely an indication of the level.  So, in my humble opinion, it's no good for checking level!! :soapbox:

Hog...I've found on mine that it is very sensitive to how the bike is sitting.  I have the Legends, so have to make sure they are fully extended, the bike is sitting on LEVEL ground on the kickstand, been sitting there a couple of minutes, and then I can get a reading...unless it is slightly overfilled.  Then it will usually just say ERROR HI and blink at me.  It's really easy to put a bit too much oil in...3.5 quarts seems to do the trick, then ride it a while and check it.  I think it's better to underfill it a bit...Oil hides in there...

Been using these things for some time now. Have them on 2 soft tails and 1 SERK. None seem to reliabley read oil level, allways say too much oil error. Temp function seems to work well. Never had problems on the STs, but drowned the one on the SERK on TOT. Was replaced under warrenty. And it is a screw in. Never had one blow off!

Mine never works to check the level when cold.  I nearly always forget to check after the engine is warm.  I would not buy it again.

When bike is hot right after a ride, it must sit a bit to read the level or it flashes Error.  The oil needs to run back down off the sensor. After one year, it seems to be working fine.  Between Hot and Cold the level changes one bar.

Okay, I'll reserve final judgment until I let it sit for a  few minutes longer each time I ride.  I always figured that by the time I took my helpmet, gloves off and locked it, that would be enough time.......guess not.  I'll let you know it it works....

It definitely sucks in regards to these two things that have already been pointed out.  It is as if the stars must be in alignment and oil temp within a tenth of a degree of the proper operating temp of the engine before the thing will give an accurate level reading.  I would not purchase another.

That would fix the high heat issue as well.  Ignorance is bliss.

IMO - it is a POS...Mine NEVER gave level readings - fogged over almost always...threw it in the trash and installed an oil temp gage in the dash - removed the POS air temp. gage.  Dash mounted oil temp gage works great!

:2vrolijk_21:   Actually, I'm starting to believe that the only gauges we need are the tach and speedo.  The other ones seldom are accurate, and if they were they would just add to the apprehension level of the rider.  I especially don't understand the so-called usefulness of the temp reading dipstick.  By the time you stop and reach down to press the little button to get a reading, what are you going to do if it reads 300°?  It may have been like that for the past hour, so why worry about it now?

We need to throw away all the gauges and embrace the philosophy in that great song by Bobby McFerrin, "Don't Worry, Be Happy".
