I just got a guage dated 4/21/06. No tail on needle no step in the needle. I scanned the guage still in the box. This is nuts.

I've been contemplating retiring at the end of this year (assuming my employer hasn't declared bankruptcy before then), and now I think I know what I'll do with my spare time.

I do have to admit that this post about the gauge has been a rather long pi$$ and moan session about an issue that we as owners of this particular bike/s really care about. Me personally, I cannot read the digital dipstick readout while in motion, nor do I feel it is a safe trick to try to accomplish.
The gauge that my dealer provided indeed matches almost perfectly the other three. The needle has the correct tail (god forbid we get a mismatched tail), the install was rather straight forward in the oil pan, the readout is easy to see in the daylight, I assume it is accurate enough to let one know when it is time to shut down and cool the beast off and it sure beats the hell out of the useless ambient air temperature gauge. As for night visibility, I can't read any of them except the speedo and tach anyway so that isn't an issue with me. Set the cruise on 80 and go.
For those on the fence about the gauge the oil pan install is the way to go IMHO.....
This is my last post to this thread, on to more serious issues like fretting between the engine/trans cases.....

then all of sudden it got personal between two members. Wierd to say the least. Your post put it in perspective quite nicely and made me laugh out loud. That's a talent. Maybe we'll offer your name up when they elect the site officers for "Peacekeeper"

Thanks for the vote of confidence, not sure about the "Peacekeeper" monicre (wasn't that a big missle?), but my wife points out regularly the way I keep my behind out of hot water with her, is mostly because I make her laugh.  Still, it is great that when the mortars begin flying, eveyone here takes it in stride for the most part.

I agree with h2o-man about the install of this gauge.
I got my bike back today and it is finally installed and works great! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
Thanks again to Twolanerider for his help in explaining the oil pan install. :)
My dealer said it was such a great way to do the install they bought several of those brass fittings at a plumbing store and that is the way they plan to do all future installs. ;D
For those interested, that way is very tucked out of the way too and should not snag on speedbumps or other things.(I hope)
After 2 1/2 days of head scratching they decided it was a two hour install process and charged me for that time.
The gauge I got has the step in it and the tail but the needle does NOT light up. It has the same lighting as all the other small gauges.I think it matches well.
When I can get a digital camera I will post pictures because I know,

For some reason I guess my ball busting was taken seriously by some. I don't ever set out to make one feel like an idiot or think what they are talking about is stupid. But it happened. And to those I offended, man up and PM me and we can discuss this.  Lets look at the big picture, were adults and we break balls sometimes you have to look at it as what it is Bro's just being Bro's. So if I pissed you off PM me I want to talk to you personally and lets get back on track. Later,Q

Two success stories.  Gotta love it.  I got so damned frustrated with the instrument's stupid (if minimal) mistakes that I bagged it when I probably should not have.  Glad you guys got it in and working so well.  Especially glad the alternative install was both so much easier and effective.

The silly gauge will be a fall project for me now.  If by the autumn there's a third (or fourth?) version of the gauge out that looks closer; well, I got lucky.  If not, I'll still screw with putting it in then.  In the mean time starting on a good long ride Monday morning so don't want to even think about repairs.  PRTM (Pre-Road-Trip-Maintenance) is done.  Swap the King tour pak on in place of the chopped and pack the bike tomorrow.  Then Monday try to follow that bus Further until my butt gets tired [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] .

Thanks for the heads up on the needle's illumination guys.  Powering it up in daylight on the bench and trying to shade it with my hand I really thought that little bugger was lit.  That annoyed me far worse than the other issues.  Sorry you all were stuck being the guinea pigs but sure am glad someone found out for sure.

Now that we're all chummy again, has anyone compared the oil temperature reading between the dip stick and gauge?
