Passenger comfort issues
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:31:43 AM »

I love my 2011 SEUC.  To me, it's as comfortable as any other Electra Glide I've owned.  Now, my BSR has a whole different opinion.  Tonight we went for a relatively short ride.  After about 5 or 10 minutes I feel her squirming around on the back seat.  I ask if everything is OK, and she says the seat is really uncomfortable, makes her hips hurt.  I know she had the same complaint on a previous bike, I can't remember which one.  I had a 2010 Ultra Limited that she thought was comfortable, and once rode about 5 hours straight with me without complaint.

The other complaint she has is really baffling.  She says the left passenger floorboard vibrates excessively.  Not the right one, only the left.  I haven't noticed anything strange about the rider floorboards at all.  After about a 30 or 40 minute ride her left foot felt funny for a while from the constant vibration.

Has anyone has passenger comfort issues like these, and if so what did you do to relieve her?

You should compare the shape of the seat on your old bike to the new. My BSR complained all last year that she was more comfortable on my old '08 FLHTC. When I compared pictures of the two seats...they were VERY different. Fortunately I kept the H-D Deep Sundowner seat from my old bike and installed it on my '09 SEUC. We shall see if it makes a difference.

Does anyone know what the stock seat is on a 2010 Ultra Limited?  She liked that seat, but the problem may not be the seat

Can I move the tour pak forward a few inches?  She thinks she may be too far back.

FWIW, I have a bone stock Road King Classic that she says is way more comfortable than my gaudy, expensive CVO.

Any ideas why the left passenger floorboard vibrates so much?  It seems like the fancy CVO floorboards don't have near the ability of the stock rubber floorboards for absorbing vibration.

Sorry for all the questions, but you know when she's not happy, nobody's happy.  :)  She'd rather ride the Road King, but I love my CVO ULtra.

I have a friend with a 2010 Limited & he replaced his seat new with a reach seat.  He might be willing to sell it?

I ride cross country a lot and have used the Air Hawk on several bikes for myself, I don't have a passenger. Won't leave home on a long ride without it. Not sure what the left peg vibration problem is about??

Hogsty, Just wondering if the floorboard that is vibrating could be loose. I had a vibration on my Heritage Classic once and it turned out to be a loose footboard. Just a thought. CAHDBIKER

The stock tour pak has two adjustment positions. Mine came assembled as far back as it would go, so you may be able to move yours forward about an inch and a half if yours is the same. You have to take the metal plate out of the bottom and then check the positions of the 4 bolts in the bottom of the tour pak (T-P). If they're in the forward-most holes, then your T-P is moved back. If they're in the rear-most holes then your T-P is already moved forward. It's kind of counter-intuitive, but makes sense when you think about it.

For the passenger floorboard vibration -first check to make sure all the floorboard mount bolts are tight and everything is assembled correctly.  Another likely problem are the exhaust mounts -I've had loose/broken exhaust mounts that caused severe vibration problems. Check them all out too -especially the ones for the pipe that crosses under/behind the transmission. And don't forget all the clamps on the pipes and mufflers too.

If you don't find anything wrong, you might try a different style of foot board mounts. My '10 CUSE came with the adjustable foot board mounts, but my BSR wanted her own highway pegs. We switched the adjustable mounts for a pair of the Kuryakyn mounts that allow the use of passenger highway pegs.

Vibration like that can be very uncomfortable, so don't give up too easy! Hope this information helps.  8)

Thanks for all the good info.  I've got a few things to check once I can get out of cubicle hell.

Sklywag, I may take your friends seat off his hands, but I hope that's a last resort.  I like the seat that came with the bike, both for looks and I think it's very comfortable.

Well, I moved the tour pack forward (it was mounted in the rear position).  Then looked at the floorboards.  I didn't realize before that they were adjustable!  DOH!  So, I tried to loosen the adjustment bolts.  HOLY SMOKE!  They must have had a gorilla on the assembly line tightening those things! They are obviusly mad of strong metal since I didn't strip them out.  I adjusted them up, and had her sit on it.  She thought it felt better, so we went for a ride.  While I had the tools out I checked all the other stuff I could see, and it all seemed tight,  So, off we go.  Immediately she says the left floorboard is still buzzing.  Just the left one.  :confused5:  I know it's tight, because I did it myself.  Then into the ride she's squirming again.   Dammit.  No difference.

Maybe I can adjust the floorboards up another notch, but that's not going to fix the vibration.  I doubt that will help with the hip pain problem either, but we'll keep fiddling and see what difference things make.  Gotta fix that vibration too

My wife always rides double with me and we put on a lot of miles, 30,000 plus per year, and she also complained that the heated seat on my SE5 was not comfortable.  We had and 09 Ultra and she never complained.  I bought one of the Limited low seats and put that on and she is back to being very happy.  Can't see why, as the CVO seats looks to be about the same.  I am happy with either one so the Low seat got a custom cover and that is on the bike all the time now.  Never had a complaint about any buzz in the foot pegs, but I did have to make some adjustments to get the height right for her.

She must really be short if she thinks the tour pack might be back to far??  I've never heard that complaint before, that's a first.

As far as her hips locking up and/or aching.....that's not all that uncommon of a complaint.  And the vibration in the left floorboard......have you checked the mounts to be sure they're tight?  If they are, then it may be a pinched nerve in her him that she's translating into the floorboard. :nixweiss:

First I'd suggest the Kuryakn Adjustable Passenger foot pegs......they mount in addition to the floor boards, so she'll have several different options for foot location and they change the angle of the hips at the same time.  $161 at Dennis Kirk.....  http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=494787&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse    My wife swore by them back when she was riding BSR.

Secondly, while she may have settled for the seat on the Ultra Limited.....we all know that those that think any HD seat is comfortable just haven't experienced enough seats out there to really know the difference.  There are two or three that lead the market in comfort and Corbin does it for us and has for several years, on several different bikes each, now. :2vrolijk_21:
