Harley's 5 Micron oil Filter
« on: May 30, 2011, 08:56:43 PM »

What reason did harley go with the 5 micron oil filter ?? Started with the Twin Cam motor.. Oil passages ? What would happen if you used a #30 micron filter ?? A 5 micron seems it could restrict the flow of oil..  Just thinking...

Does it restrict flow? Yes, but very little. Do you need a 5 micron filter? I don't think so. A lot of riders here use K&N filters which are a high flow filters and have a rating of 15-18 microns and they work just fine. I would not be worried if the filter was not 5 microns. The whole Micron rating system is very subjective. All that being said, the HD filter is a well made filter as is the K&N.
I know a number of people also that use Wix filters, they seem to be well built and work fine also.

I went and ordered a Wix filter at local parts house, went back next day to pick up and parts guy took it opon him self to cross it to a CARQUEST oil filter. I quetioned them why and, on on on... They couldn't find the micron ## for it.. I just went and took it and changed oil and put this on. Well when I went to start and check for leaks I noticed how quiet the motor sounded, no vave train, cam chain noise, or very little at that. Sounded great. Rode for about 200 miles and great. So now I'm reserching the filter as Wix makes their filters. Now I'm waiting for an answer about this filter.. My 2010 FLHTK never sounded better.. Reduced engine noise.  That's why I think the 5 MICRON filter restricks the flow.. They need a 5 micron filter with better flow rate..

Carquest filters are made by Wix.

Depends on oil viscosity (thickness) and temperature

Also depends on the design of each filter.  Some bypass at relatively low differential pressures, others at much higher differentials.  It's one of the many specs that make one filter better than another for a particular application.

Why would a different filter cause the motor to run quieter as mentioned in the earlier post?

My guess is better oil flow.. Less restriction...
