Radio Display
« on: May 24, 2006, 11:30:38 AM »

I've just been bitten by the disappearing radio display bug. I did a search and it appears that in some cases replacing the radio has been the solution.

I'm wondering what the impact was for the XM with a radio replacemnt. Do you get a new XM id and have to hassle with XM to convert/authorize the new radio ??

FWIW I've tried the contrast adj to no avail and am going to contact service dept today. All audio functions work fine, just no display.

 Just curious  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Shoot, the display on the radio is so hard to see I'm not sure it would make a lot of difference.  Maybe just my tired old eyes. . . :o

The XM is a separate unit from the radio and does not need to be replaced so should be no effect with your service.  In the photo below the module on the top left is XM with the pink plug.

I had my display disappear (contrast down too much). You don't need the display to get it back. You can do it with  following manual and counting the times you push buttons. When you are at the contrast adjustment screen (I know you still can't see it ) press the button the book calls out to make the display brighter. You should get the display back. After all that aggravation I am Real careful now about having the disp[lay to dark and shutting the radio off. I don't know if I explained it right but first time took me about an hour of pushing and swearing.

My display blanked out a few times for me,, so when I had to my dealers for a parts install,, I told them about it,, and also told them the CD player would skip alot.   When I picked my bike up,,  they had installed a NEW radio,, and my display has not blanked out on this one yet,, and I have not had 1 CD skip or pause on me.  My Dealer told me that the first batch of radios they had put in the new bikes,, has problems,, which was the case for mine I guess.  I couldnt be more happy with my new radio.    Good Luck  with yours!

I feel your pain, had mine in twice with no display, finally got a new radio, now there are 2 lines across the screen. PROBLEM REVIEW The radio 3 times now, the heated grips 3 times, gas gauge twice, oil leaks, I've had it. As much as I like the bike it's for sale. My watermellon is a lemon   >:(

Jerry -- Never touched the contrast -- it just went out on me. I tried for an hour too. I can adjust everything but the display contrast.

06 -- thanks for feeling my pain -- I'm glad I'm not feeling yours -- That sux with all those problems. Fortunately this is the only prob I've had. I really love the bike

[smiley=soapbox.gif] I know that the MOCO apreciates us doing their field testing. They like it most after warranty when we pay all the debug costs. When you take the factory tours they are all about quality control and assurance. I've had my SEUC for 6 days and 210 miles. Today I noticed when I was on the WB that about 2/3rds of the H-D logo was showing to the left of the weather display. Could only get the display back to normal by switching to the next mode (XM) and it did not recur. But, I just read this thread this morning and thought I better keep an eye on this, and lo and behold, something weird happened. See, goofing off at work on the internet pays off.

BTW, I was checking the WB for the t-storms moving into the NE Ohio area that I could see looming in my rearview mirror. Got a couple drops but stayed ahead of it busting along at 80mph (tailwind-assisted). I've tried to be good about the break-in period even though I don't really think it is super critical. 80 was an indicated 3200 rpm so I was below 3500 for about 8-10 miles. The motor was definitely in its sweet spot and no hint of wobble noticed.

My display has blanked out twice now the first time I washed my bike I got water on it. Took two weeks for it to come back on.  What was the MOCO thinking a radio that you can't get wet????  The second time it went out I rode all day in the rain and the darn thing blanked out again.. I came up with a cover that I put over the radio face, (See Picture) before I wash it.  I bet you are getting your radio wet.  Try setting it out all day in the sun (Heat) for a couple of days.  This should get the moisture out that gets between the LCD plates. When it drys out it should come back.  Talked to my HD dealer and he said that the MOCO is having too many problems so he thinks they are coming out with a difference radio for the 07 models.  Just got the display back on and now the darn thing ATE A CD!!!!!!!! Can't win for loosing.....  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Bubba,

You may have hit on something -- 2 weeks ago I took it in for service and it was raining like crazy. I don't normally wash mine (with a hose). When I picked it up, the stealer said it had just come off the wash rack. Plus it was raining on the way home too.

I'll try your suggestion to sun dry her !!

Thanks  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Am knocking on the proverbial wood but the HK 06 radio I installed in the red 05 bike has endured hours and hours of rain and several washings wherein the fairing got a good spritzing too.  At least so far no display problems.  Can't speak to tomorrow.  But so far it's been good.
