I installed the Bluetooth Module this weekend, and...... it doesn't work.  

I used the correct overlay harness for the Ultra, and I know that (despite the instructions being very, very, poor, in true MoFoMoCo style!) it is properly installed and connected, thanks to having the Workshop Manual so I could see the wiring diagram - the instructions with the kit "run out of steam" when it comes to connecting it.

All connected, but no "PHONE" option appears on the display of my radio....

The problem therefore, has to be one of two things (I'm discounting faulty wiring harnesses):

1) The Bluetooth module is dud - just possible I suppose
2) The radio itself is a dud - unlikely I think
3) The Men at the MoFoMoCo have screwed up (not unusual!) and "forgotten" to include the PHONE option on the European firmware for the Retarded Audio System.  Given that they've been shipping them for a year, and the CB part still cannot communicate with anything other than other 06 bikes, this would not surprise me!  

So the question - do any of you guys have any contacts, or telephone numbers/email addresses for someone sensible in either HD or Harman/Kardon so I can ask them to confirm for definite that the "PHONE" option really does exist in the European audio system?

The reply I got from Zanotti (can't recommend them too highly by the way!) says:

"Bob, our service manager said he never installed but if its like the other components that you need to have digital tech to have it be recognized. Its a tool that Harley dealers use when changing electronics on harley. Call your local HD dealer to verify."

If that were the case, I'd have thought that maybe the instructions would say this was necessary - but they don't. If I call my local HD dealer, they a) won't have any experience of the Bluetooth module and b) may be unwilling to do any work to find out as it wasn't bought from them.

Any of you guys who had the Bluetooth module fitted care to ask your local dealer for me?

This may or may not be of help, and you may have already tried this. But I have a bluetooth phone, (not connected to scooter) with a bluetooth headset. When I first got them I had to "pair" them up so that they would recognize each other. Have you done this, or did instructions mention doing this?

No, thanks Firedood -  but in order to get to the "pairing" stage, the "PHONE" option has to be selected on the Retarded Audio System; first time you select it it tells you to pair.  However, as the PHONE option fails to appear on the display, I can't select it, and thus can't get to the pairing stage.

I can ask, but I know the answer.....just talked to them last week, they haven't done one since mine, and it worked first time in.....surprised the hell outta them too.

I'd say (and I know you already have), go over all the connections again, usually they'll only mate up to certain connectors so that shouldn't really be an issue, but ya never know.....then start making sure everything is where it's suppose to be...check for ground, check for power...that type of stuff.  I'll check the manual and see if it has the schematic for the Bluetooth in it (doubt it though).

Thanks (as ever!) Fr8!  But I have the manual - that's how come I know it's connected properly (no thanks to the awful instructions!) but it doesn't work...

Looking at the schematics....the only thing I can see that might cause what your getting would be the Red and Black Wires coming out of the Hands Free Module (HFM) on connections 8 and 9 (dotted lines in the pics).....and 4 and 27 on the radio side.......they are HFM Audio +/-......the existance of these might be the trigger to tell the system that an HFM is present.  This is logical because the CB has seperate CB Audio +/- also that is tied to no other "existing" system, so these wires are likely the trigger.  The rest of them are tied into the CB Module and if your still seeing your CB then thats not the problem.

That being said I remember my mech said that they had to put the connector together inside the tourpak at the HFM, put one of those connections back in wrong and your screwed...I'd certainly ohm between the radio connector and the HFM connector to make sure those 2 wires are making it and are in the right place.....

You have one connector to put together inside the fairing, and those two to insert in the 35-pin connector. Double and triple checked (visually) that those are all correct, and fully in. I'd be very very very surprised if there were a break somewhere in the harness, but I guess next weekend I'll stick a meter on them to be 100% certain.

I'm still with the guess that they've forgotten to add the phone feature to the European firmware, but if someone here can just check with a tech who HAS fitted one of these that you don't need some special gadget to get the module "recognised" as Zanotti's suggest, that'll be one more thing ruled out.

Poor old CVOinLV's dealer said they were in contact with Harman/Becker re the CB problem, so if I could just get a contact number for Harman/Becker.....

Also....looking at the other audio +/- wires in there.....I'd make sure that wire pair I mentioned before is a twisted pair also, they obviously did it for a reason.....I mean I know why they do it, just not that it's usually needed in a basic audio system....

Another interesting thing, FR8 - check out the Y/O and Y/V lines from the HFM.  They don't go anywhere!  What's the point in running them all the way to the front of the bike to have them connect to nothing?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Try cycling the power to the bluetooth module. Unplug the connector then plug it back in. Mine hung up and that's how I cleared it. Some how The main radio goes out and looks to see if the module is there. I think there may be a software glitch.
