After reading the oil article link above...

So, to the chemical engineer impared...it would seem, for example, that Mobil 1 20w50 for auto use and the Mobil 1 20w50 for v-twins would perform the same.

Now, is there a crash test dummy out there?...is anyone running automotive oil in their CVO?

Last time I bought Mobil 1 V-Twin at Autozone, they were having a sale for $7.95 a quart! Should have bought more...

In my continued dedication to this site, its membership and continued research I earlier today asked a female friend if she would prefer being stripped down and slathered in Mobil 1 or Redline.  She offered a one finger gesture as the answer so, apparently, Mobil 1 it is :huepfenjump3: !

What an INCREDIBLE recommendation! Maybe Mobil should rename their oil Mobil "Middle Finger" 1[/b] !!!   :2vrolijk_21:

Yes Mark,
I have ran automotive oil in all my CVO's and other Harley's
I also do 10,000 mile oil changes, filter every 2 with a top off.
Wide glide has over 90,000 on it now, never a problem, and motor is built.
My old 08 cvo touring that my friend has is over 30,000 with no problems so far, he still runs auto oil in it.
Last but not least, my 2011 FLHTCUSE6 just turned 12,000, and yes, I am running auto oil in it also.
Just sayin, prove to me motorcycle oil is better.

Eagleeye07, There may be a slight advantage to using synthetic oil. I am now using amsoil with no issues. However, a friend I ride with has a 2001 Heritage with over 200,000. miles on it and he only uses HD Dino 20-50 oil at recommended intervals. The only major issue he had was at 180,000 miles when his engine balancers went south (he has the "B" engine ) and he sent it in for a HD rebuild with good results. He is the only person I know with that many miles on one bike, but he does ride it to work on the freeway 70 miles M-F plus trips to Sturgis etc. So if he saved 10 dollars each time he changed his oil he saved $360.00. Would his bike have lasted longer before the engine balancers took a dive if he used synthetic? Who knows. But this goes to show you that you can go along way on regular HD oil if you want to. I run Mobil 1 V-Twin in crankcase, Redline Heavy Shockproof in tranny, but I went a different way in primary.I run Ford Type F transmission fluid. Have a 113 motor and don't go easy on anything and have 51100 miles on factory clutch. No slippage yet.

HT/HS or "High Temperature/High Shear" (ASTM D-4683) is an rating that determines the oils stability in a high temperature, high stress conditions. The oil's ability to withstand shearing and tearing is very important especially in a high RPM engine. The oil's ability to protect bearings, cylinder walls and rings, connecting rod bearings, main bearings, cam lobes and lifters, etc. is vital to an engine. For an oil to pass the ASTM D-4683, an oil must have a protective viscosity of 2.9 cP at 302 degrees F. The HIGHER the number the better!

The oils with highest quoted HTHS viscosities have been Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50, Amsoil Harley V-Twin 20w50, and Brad Penn Racing 1 20w50, all with HTHS #s near or in excess of 6.0.
Brad Penn 6.8
Amsoil 6.02
Mobil  6.08
Redline 5.8
Brad Penn Racing 1 20w50 is a Automotive oil
Valvoline VR1 20W-50 has been showing some good numbers in HD's of late also.

I just checked Redline's website...the V-Twin Transmission Fluid and the Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil are both 13.95/qt.  The V-Twin Primary Fluid and Manual Transmission Lubricant (MTL) were 13.95 and 13.49 respectively.  If I'm looking at the right products, it appears they've addressed the price disparity.

So geez which one do you run in the tranny?  HEHEHE. Plus arent the synthetic oils too slippery? Sorry couldn't resist. :pepper: :pineapple: :nervous:

I've been riding Harley's since the 70's (I'm on my eighth one) and have never had an oil pump go or an engine failure...just do my regular maintenance...and Harley oil is readily available at every Harley dealer that I have ever visited in North America (should you need a quart)!

Buy and use what you like, but Harley oil works for me. :)

I have run all redline in my 2002, but a friend of mine had a transmission completely self destruct at 70k miles (always used Heavy Shockproof) and it was not run hard or mistreated. After examination by several good mechanics the conclusion was that a broken part was held in suspension by the sticky red stuff which carried the part through all the gears and bearings. Hardly any metal had collected on the magnetic plug.... I'm going to abandon Redline based on this info.

Wow!!! I was in a room filled with Excellent mechanics in a failure analysis class.  All our conclusions of the failure were from what was obvious and what we saw with our eyes. As we looked deeper with microscopes it was amazing what we found out the root cause was. Needless to say, we were all wrong! :nixweiss: As for me, I will continue use Redline oil in my trans... :2vrolijk_21:
