Something I noticed on my 2012
« on: October 26, 2011, 09:35:08 PM »

Last weekend I was able to get a little trip in on my 2012 Yellow Jacket. Went to Lynchburg TN for the annual barbecue contest. On the way out there I was wearing my half helmet and noticed I kept having to adjust my helmet. It was trying to lift off my head. I have purchased the 8" Freedom shield with the recent sale they had and absolutely love it. I can put my hand up and feel the wind from the windshield was riding over my head. I then moved my legs against the fuel tank and helmet stayed in place. I opened my legs again and helmet was trying to flip back. Put my hand beside the fuel tank and there was quit a bit of wind coming up that I didn't experience on my 05 SEEG. I realized it is probably coming from the Mid-Frame Wind Delectors. Was wondering if any of you noticed this coming off a previous scooter that didn't have wind deflectors? I think I'm going to take them off and see what happens. Then I got to wondering if those deflectors are contributing to the heat on the engine. Anyone try taking them off and see how they run? :nixweiss:

I also wonder what the outcome would be. I have read others speculations about the deflectors possibly holding in heat and some swear by them. This will be interesting. Thanks for sharing.

JR, one of the other guys on the site took his midframe wind deflectors off and I believe he said he felt less heat on his legs. I can't remember who it was, but it was within the last 10 days. I have't pulled mine off yet, but I plan to. Please let us know what your results are.CAHDBIKER

i tried them on my 04..  had them on for about a month and took them off..  I think they keep the heat in by the rear cylinder and has no where to go.   another $70.00 down the drain or just laying in the drawer..  I did keep the cable clamp for the cruise control on though.  To me they were a waste. :nixweiss:

I took the heat shields off cause they were ugly on my 09 and after running and then coming to a stop I would get a blast of hot air , like oven door open gush, so I took em off, that went away...Now taking the front lower leg off helped alot with the air that pushed up the front of the tank...riding without them has made that go away. Now winshield and helmet combo...maybe back to a 4 inch with a new arai rx that is due friday...hope it works or I may hang it up.

you riding with lowers off? don't know bout them batwings but on a TR the lowers help with the wind buffeting alot. the heat might not escape as fast, but eh. besides its just getting to be riding season down yonder. :huepfenjump3:

There's been several threads on this over the years.

I was contacted and soliceted by the owner of RJS Original Heat Shields and was asked to try a pair of them.  I voiced a concern about the heat trapped around the rear cylinder (I quietly planned to use an infrared temp gun to determine the difference) and was going to pass the "sample" set around to the members of this forum.

Once I mentioned the concern for heat captured at the rear cylinder (which already runs hotter than the front cylinder), he renigged on his original solicitation and offer and immediatly discountinued any communication.

In short.....I think you probably did the right thing JR. :2vrolijk_21:

You can read a couple of those threads here:

Yassah, I took em off and the uprush of air around the front of the gas tank abated quite a bit....jussayinzall...

To be honest, I'm not sure what good they do on the 09's and newer.  On my 07, there was noticeable heat dissipation, but on the '11 SERGU, I can't really tell the difference when riding it from riding the SESG3 that doesn't have them.  Not sure since running the pipe under the frame that the deflectors do anything now.   :nixweiss:

I've wondered about those things too...I don't see how they could do anything but keep the heat on the rear cylinder.  Didn't HD come out with these things as a "solution" to the heat issues with the 110's in '07 or '08?  To keep the heat off your thigh?

Yes, and a fine job they did - NOT!

I don't have any noticeable heat issue from the rear cylinder on my bike... plus the H-D mid frame deflectors are Mega-FUGLY, IMHO. I wouldn't want to ruin the sleek lines of my bike by having those big black monstrosities on it... I don't think any deflectors are even needed, really... plus in colder weather riding, ANY heat from the engine is WELCOME!  :P

For sure.  But you can dress them up with the Mid-Drame Air Deflector Trim, p/n 61400028, for the modest price of only $59.95.  Seriously a couple guys I know have added this trim piece.  I compare it to wearing white socks with a black suit (like Elwood Blues).  I mean it just draws attention and does not improve the appearance, imo.

WOW  :nervous:  This thread is very interesting cause I was thinking of putting them on my mc to help with the heat when in slow or stopped traffic but after reading what you guys have written, I'm reconsidering.   :nixweiss:  That's why I love this forum, so much great info and feedback  :cucumber:
